@ScottFairley The Strat I was using on the video is well shielded, and my power in my music room is pretty clean. So I have less interference than most people have when playing single coils.
Awesome playing and tone! I love this amp!! On mine, I replaced the tiny stock C5 capacitor (4.7nF) to a Sozo 22nF and it really opened up the bottom end without messing with the Vox-iness
@xr650r01 Cool! Does this ADD more low-end? This is one of the things I miss in my AC4 after I've played one of my big amps.. I like my cleans to be full in the low-end.
@DStreur Yes it does give it more bottom end, but like I said, it still retains the Vox chime. It's a great mod that literally costs less than 5 bucks if you do it yourself and it doesn't change the personality of the amp - just gives it more down low.
I may up the C6 to a 47nF cap as well as I'm told this will really warm it up even more. However, I was warned that this will make it more like a Fender tweed when driven at the cost of that Vox overdrive sound we love...
@xr650r01 How did you come up with that mod? It seems kind of random unless you know about the circuit. I'm working on a project with paired AC4s, I have a 6.5" arriving tomorrow, & I can't decide if I should just get a second identical one, or test another speaker before I decide on the final project. I'm building a custom cabinet that will hold both chassis and I'm not sure how I'll configure the whole thing by the time I'm done. I'm also going to record & challenge people to choose blind fav.
@constructivereconcil Cap C5 is very small, at 4.7nF, so upping it to 22nF opens up some low end without eliminating the Vox chime. A 22nF will help the bass without killing the Vox cleans. If you are after more distortion, you could go with a 10nF. If you want warmer (than Vox) clean tones, you can go witha 22nf in C5 and then change C6 to a 47nF. Swapping C5 and C6 in this manner will take away the chime and move you toward more of a Fender response to overdrive, in a "Tweedy" kind of way.
@xr650r01 I just got mine yesterday (mini) & I love it. The only thing I want to deal with is a slight muddiness on the bottom when the saturation is heavy. I also prefer the 1/10-watt setting & I can't believe I almost bought a 10" combo. Now I can easily plug in my 10" but I can't easily modify the attenuation.
I'm going to order an EQ, I hate putting gear in between the signal, but I need a tuner at least, so I'll split the signal off to get tuning and maybe route through a multi-fx.
2/2 I have a selection of caps I bought for several other projects (all EL84 SE). Is your mod a particular distinct tone, or is it something you believe helps all AC4s? I love tube amps specifically for the high dynamic range, I never use compression, I think it masks poor playing though I know some genres need compression, most players should practice without.
You know, you might be interested in my project to create a stereo pair of EL84s w tube preamp EQ+fx loop.
Very good example of what this little amp can do. I actually gig this amp (mic thru PA), but it's great to have awesome tone and not have to break your back carrying a heavy cab or combo. Also great that it fits in back seat of my sedan with all my gear and takes pedal very well.
In a real world application, most gigging amateurs do not need more than this amp has to offer. I love that our stage mix is at realistic sound levels and no ears ringing later.
Nice playing. I own this amp and use a Crowther Hotcake & Boss RV-3 in front of it with my standard tele, sounds just awesome. On full wattage this amp is easily loud enough for indoor practice with a drummer.
I got this amp, and I think you really nailed that John Mayer kind of sound, but what's the role of the delay pedal here (it's a delay pedal right?). You play great btw
@ivoguitars93 Thanks mate! I had the delay on for a TINY amount of slapback as I prefer pedal delay over pedal reverb. I had the mix too low to actually hear it on the mic though. Thanks again for the kind words!
@Eddy1993PT Hi Eddy, actually no. I recorded everything around apartment levels ;-) The built-in attenuator really helps cutting down the volume and keeps it versatile.
@Eddy1993PT Well, I lived in a apartment when I bought this amp. I never played higher then a 1/4 watt. I was evicted for playing my guitar too loud 3 months later(after 4 warnings). I guess it all depends on the apartment. I thought a quarter watt would be really quiet when I first bought it, but all the neighbors could hear me play a few hours a day.
Um I have this amp and its the greatest amp Ive ever owned and have gigged countless times with it, its perfect! You just have to learn to play more pure tone and quit trying to oversaturate your signal with crappy effects. just freakin play the guitar!
@jesusofsuburbia57 Not even close.. At least, not without being miked, and if you're being miked, you need good monitors or in-ears since you won't be hearing your guitar sound over a drummer.. Maybe if the drummer has a soft attack and is using brushes.
@DStreur lol i play lots of lub gigs n barrooms this amp works for me un mic'd and elevated in smaller places. or through a cab and/ or mic'd for bigger stuff i guess depends on ur use
@masharms13 Yeah, I should've specified more. It's not loud enough for a pristine clean sound while holding up with a drummer, you will be able to get a broken up sound at gig levels with an extention cab (I use a 2x12 with Celestion Golds).
@theghost2987 I've found that higher gain pedals sound mushy and overly bassy through lower-wattage amps, I guess those kind of pedals need more headroom than a low wattage amp can give them.
Thank you for posting this video. Your a much better guitarist than me and the amp sounds AWESOME..... Im gonna buy the head n cab tomorrow. Vox should be paying you commission.
Thanks for your kind words mate! You can't go wrong with this amp for blues and classic rock IMO. I'll post a new vid soon showing how the amp takes pedals (excellent!)
you definately should. it would be cool if your had like a tube screamer, treble booster, or fuzz face types pedals(i guess just the standards) great video demonstrating this video.
definitely too loud for bedroom, even if u want to play at 1/4 watt... ( this setting is not as good as the 4 watt... u really hear a difference!) and even on the 1/4 distortion will be much too loud!
I would recommend to try the version with 8" speaker... may i do that myself, too!
Hey, i use a Boss Me-70 and if you turn the amp volume down like on 1 (of 10) u can use it as distortion yea... but than u dont really have the cool vox amp sound.... it's like driving a Lamborghini only at second gear... that bullshit.... if u have so much power u really want to use it ;)
well i think you should go for the marshall class 5, mind you it is loud, but damn man, its simple to use, its a marshall and i guess with tubes, you gotta crank em, lest you choose ss amps with all the digital effects and all..just an opinion man, cheers
IMO it is, with the attenuator set to the lowest setting.. you can get break-up at tv volumes. If you want more gain, just use a gain box.. Tubescreamers and treble boosters work extremely well with his amp.. also a hotcake works wonders with ANY vox amp
I went to try this one out today, and you can change the "Wattage" (excuse my french), to 1/4, 1, or 4. So you can set the power accordingly to where you are playing. It sounds AMAZING by the way, so bluesy and also very rock n roll if you set full tone and volume on 1/4 W. You should get this amp
Hey I've already sent u an email, but one more question :D what song do u play while u play clean? is it a song or just improv? Nice playing! Does the AMP sounds really that warm and clear Live?
does this have enough volume to piss off the people upstairs. at clean levels is too quiet.(knowing it would be for home use.) thanks and great playing.
Absolutely killer playing, sounded great! I miss my AC4.

I'm not hearing any single-coil hum. Is the amp not noisy, or is that from the pickups or a power conditioner?

Hell yeah! First day I got it the neighbours came knocking at the door.
I love the built-in attenuator. It can give you break-up at talking volumes. But when you switch it off (full 4 Watt) it can get pretty loud.
I reckon through a good 2x12 with efficient speakers, you can gig with this thing!
