thats funny :) in the first semestre we had to make a videovisual presentation about spivak and her book "Can the Subaltern Speak?". we came to the same conclusions as you :D unfortunatly we didnt discovered your video so we would have saved a lot of time :D her book is very philosophical and i had to read it three times to understand the fundament :D you will find the vid on my channel, but its in german (im indian living in austria) we synchronized our vocals with video of spivak speaking :D

I do agree with you that it is wrong to use this as an excuse to invade a country, but is it not also wrong to deny that religion, not just Islam but all patriarchal religions, are a scourge? Claiming that happiness is different for different people IS being an apologist for cultural relativism. There are most definitely ways of living that are superior - look at Denmark. We shouldn't deny Islam's oppression of women out of guilt for past colonialism. Lambaste me if I'm wrong. =)
While not excusing Western imperialism, why is it not reasonable to create a monolith of certain aspects of Islam? If we consider the Koran to be inextricable from Islam, then you cannot possibly be correct. Allah is hardly a moderate. Something seems amiss in your description of the upper class Egyptian women, too. Voluntary in what context? If you must submit to be Muslim, and must wear the covering to submit, and must remain Muslim or be an apostate, then it is difficult to call it voluntary.
Our way of thinking (the secular way) is superior then the Muslims way of thinking. We shouldn't be shy about asserting that.
