Because Sam was the oldest male at the age of when the change is to occur. Therefore, he was the FIRST to actually change putting him in that leadership position for when the other's joined. Not to mention, when Jacob did change, he turned down Sam's attempt to turn the pack leadership over to him. :-)

There is another reason, it is also because Sam is really calm in all situations and is be able to figuire out what to do and what is best for the pack. But i did not exactly agree with him wanting to attack Bella in Breaking Dawn. But it was still for his people.

Sam is treated as the leader because he was the first one to phase so bascally that is why and als Sam was good in his job so even after Sam had offered Jacob to step down from his spot, Jacob just didn't want to be the leader,as he didn't want to take the responsibility. It only starts changing when in the 4th book Jacob steps into his rightful place and basically "rips" the wolf pack apart and so there are two pack for a shot amut of time. But that's another story.

Sam was the first one to become a 'shapeshifter' or 'werewolf' (whatever you call it) and since Sam is the Beta then he is the Alpha for the meantime since Jacob isn't in the pack yet. But later on Sam and Jacob switch places.

Sam is suppose to be the Beta, but Sam was the first to change and he had more experience with the Phazing and all that so he became the Alpha. Jacob is the right Alpha, but he doesnt want the pressure and the leading of the pack so he decides not to.
And they are treating Jacob in that strange way because its bond to happen its completely in his blood one way to escape it no matter what he is destined to be in the PACK.

Ok, the pop quiz answer is because Sa was obviously the first to shape shift. Jacob isn't a wolf yet, so therefore he can't become Alpha, and skipping a little bit ahead into the saga, he states that he doesn't want to be an alpha.

OK WHOA!! YOUR ALL SKIPPING AHEAD!! REMEMBER.. Jacob STILL doesn't know whats going on with Sam's Gang, and he still doesn't believe in any of the old wolf stories. Jacob doesn't start changing or finding out about Sam's Gang until the night Jacob and Bella go to the movies with Mike as the third wheel. After the movies that night is when Jacob FINALLY phased into his wolf form for the first time. Sam is treated with respect and not Jacob because THEY know the secret that Jacob doesn't know yet.

Sam is older, so Jacob hasn't transformed yet. Sam's grandfather was also Ephrium's Beta in the last pack. If Jared's Grandfather had been Beta, he would be leader until Jacob came along. The only reason Sam is in charge is cause Jacob hasn't transformed.

i think that sam is being treated as leader for 2 reasons: 1. hes responsable cuz hes older and 2. he was the first to become a werewolf out of everyone. so it makes sence he is alpha (alpha meaning one or first)

cause when jacob is able to transform he doesn't want to take the role from Sam and is more than happy to be like a second-in-comand. He also says that he thinks that the other people in the group would prefer to have Sam incharge rather than him but I think that might be mentioned in a later book

because sam was first to transform/shape shifter, whatever u want to call it,. and the elders had let themselves go of there shap shifting abilities and he was the only person the the time who could shift, therefore, why wouldnt he be leader? and jacob explains in i think eclipse or BD that sam asked him to be leader, but he was up for it.

Sam was treated as the tribe leader because he was simply the first descendant in years to turn into a wolf, since it skipped Billy Black's generation (cuz there were no vamps round at that time). And so, Sam knows more about becoming a shape-shifter than the rest of them.

Because Sam was the oldest male at the age of when the change is to occur. Therefore, he was the FIRST to actually change putting him in that leadership position for when the other's joined. Not to mention, when Jacob did change, he turned down Sam's attempt to turn the pack leadership over to him. :-)

If I remember correctly Jacob isn't a 'werewolf' yet. So he hasn't had the chance to turn them down as being the leader. If he would have token the opprotunity he would have been treated even more like an elder then Sam.

It went to sam because Jacobs dad Billy it skipped his generation and Jacob was a little kid at the time. So Sam was the first to transform and then the others since sam had already been through the change he helped the others and so he became leader but when Jacob finally did change sam did give him the choice to be leader but he turns it down thinking he is not good enough.
