  • I'm so high and this is amazing.

  • funny thing is, peeps who are geniuses have an incredible sense of humor....the only problem is, not a lot of people understand their humor :D

  • Absolutely love this... have to listen to it at least once a day <3

  • There's something in my eye...

  • My husband is stationed in south Korea and this song makes me miss him sooooooooooo much more. I can't stop listening to it.

  • Can't stress how much I love this song. Fucking gorgeous

  • is this...'a symphony with the sound on mute...'

  • Only Tim Minchin would be able to make these lyrics into a romantic song. Simply beautiful.

  • Hi, Thanks for posting the lyrics. Been looking for them. However, I think, if you don't mind me saying, that when you write

    "The street ahead

    and a sideways glance"

    that it should be

    "The straight ahead

    in a sideways glance"

    What do you think?

  • He's been named a genius for his work in 'Matilda' :) Took the media long enough to realise it!

  • holy crap. wow.

  • Tim is actually more amazing when he's doing something serious than when he's being funny and that's pretty fucking amazing.

  • Where did you get this because i've been searching amazon and couldn't find it?

  • @shippodna it's on itunes... thts where i found it anyways:P

  • How is it that Coldplay have spent 5 albums in search of a perfect love song, and have found considerable success, but when Tim Minchin just happens to turn his mind to the task, he tops them in a single blow?

  • Your love is like one last breath of salty air

Your love is like a map that leads to nowhere

A wine glass on a concrete floor

    The overuse of metaphors!

    Haha! Genius :D

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful.

  • I have just found my life's purpose.... (that's going a bit far isn't it...) every time I hear this it gives me chills.

  • the overuse of metaphore x

  • This song is incredibly beautiful, but that photo is so goddam seedy, I love it!

  • Tim Minchin is a comedian, yet this song is so beautiful. You get the comedic references but from a serious perspective this is a perfect example of a love you can't get out of, no matter how bad or good it is. Tim Minchin is an amazing musician and songwriter.

  • I wish I could just drown in the love I used to have. I wish it was that easy. I wish everybody could be as emotionally beautiful as this.

  • This song is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Seriously.

  • this song has been in my head all day... and not the annoying way, but the that wonderful "I have to hear that song again as soon as possible" kind of way. :)

  • {:O

  • That's the most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard him sing.

  • For some reason this video is just amazing. I have no clue what it is, but the lyrics just resonate perfectly with the lyrics.

  • 8 people are simply just jealous people who want to be as lyrically gifted as this great man, unlike us likers who understand that he is a higher being, who cannot be matched in greatness, awesomeness, or wonderfullity (all real words)

  • love it love it love it what an amazing person x bevy x

  • This reminded me of The Notebook...

  • Not a day goes by without me listening to this song, without having it all day in my mind, I think about that love I have to offer but I am too afraid to see it unrequested, so I stay afloat even though I'm cast adrift, I'll drown when I finally find at the bottom, the bottom of my heart, what I'm really looking for.

  • hauntingly beautiful.

  • Tim Minchin could sing this to a statue. And it would respond.

  • This is crushingly beautiful.

  • The beginning of the song sounds really similar to REM's "Everybody Hurts". This one's better though.

  • Ordinarily I despise people who comment on the dislikes a video has, because it changes frequently and they usually aren't very clever, but I'm doing it anyway.

    EIght people don't understand love.

  • Where can I get this version? iTunes only has the song from the soundtrack, and I like this one better.

  • @wrenyosh Yea i feel the same way, the one on itunes isn't 100% tim-style! :l

  • This song would make a good background to a video about Buffy and Spike.

  • I've said it before, I'll say it again: This man is genius. And this is absolutely beautiful :')

  • Like trying not to cough........ =_= damn sneaky bastard he got me

  • This was just beautiful :'3

  • I like this song :)

  • @Kyelana69 Tim Minchin is a pure genius with EVERYTHING he does!!

  • @chicklegs11 isn't it "the straight ahead in a sideways glance"?

  • @MarisaPlater It is indeed +1 internets for being able to listen properly, unlike some people :D *high five*

  • I may be wrong but I think the lyric might be "The street I had in a sideways glance", rather than "The street ahead and a sideways glance".

  • @chicklegs11 I agree with what Marisa said, I think it's "the straight ahead" not "the street ahead" - otherwise it just doesn't make sense, and that's what I always heard when I listened to it. ;)

  • This is honestly one of the most romantic songs i know.....Tim Minchin is a pure genius for this.

  • @CaffeinatedThinking Well, let's get married then?

  • @CaffeinatedThinking found her

  • Why is Tim so amazing?

  • @CaffeinatedThinking Sorry, I'm already married xD

  • so beautiful.

  • @Shinsorataka Well, then the world is ending. It's beautiful. And romantic.

  • @tsjaaaa Don't worry. The men in white coats are coming soon. Enjoy your stay at the Funny Farm!

  • wow...just wow, this is amazing

  • The awkward moment when this describes exactly how I feel about my girlfriend.

  • Its amazing how Tim can get away with playing comedy one minute and serious songs the next and still make you laugh and cry. He's just a genius :)

  • This is fucking adorable, and I'm a teenage girl who hates romance :L

  • @CaffeinatedThinking + You Grew On Me, ofcourse.

  • omg this is beautiful. love hurts :(

  • What a beautiful song. The last verse is so moving and you can really feel the emotion in his voice. It's unbelievable and heart-wrenching.

  • @CaffeinatedThinking will you marry me?

  • @CaffeinatedThinking

i just looked at your channel and if you weren't that much older htan me i would marry you. it is on of the most romantic songs i have ever heard.

  • @missRomulous I'm only 24 :-)

  • @craigfatman yes, that is 8 years :) and the "some much" would applyto anyone older than 18. :)

  • he's a friggin brilliant comedian .. but what i love about Tim is he is equally fantastic at creating a beautiful love song ... with his quirky twist :D i love this man :)

  • I've never felt the URGE to dedicate a song before...But Johnny Boy...Without you...I have all I need...

  • @CaffeinatedThinking you´re going to marry many girls then, lucky boy^^

  • This is the most beautiful and honest love song ever written. Stunning.

  • This song is very romantic but i wouldn't marry you CaffeinatedThinking lol

  • @CaffeinatedThinking i like the way you think! i'd have it as my first dance song, myself.

  • @CaffeinatedThinking Lol, it's funny you said that. I just dedicated this to my new boyfriend. I think it's tragically beautiful :)

  • @CaffeinatedThinking

Honestly, I'd have prefered to get a proposal in some other way... :p

Seriously though, this song is the epitome of romance and love.

  • MY FAVORITE tim song

  • That was very pretty... but I don't get it...

  • @CaffeinatedThinking I once sang a version of this song to the girl I loved.

  • such a beautiful song, i want someone who thinks so too :(

  • @CaffeinatedThinking

Thats why I plan on keeping the girl im with, she said I could play this song and "if i didnt have you" if we ever get married!

  • If only someone would sing something as beautiful to me (:

  • This is tim minchin's most beautifull love song. its amaisingly romantic.

  • this is my ringtone. can't wait for my phone to ring, and i never want to answer it

  • @CaffeinatedThinking There are a couple of us ;)

  • @crazyandHyper i totally agree lol i was bout to write that then i sawe you already did ;)

  • The guy who thinks this is as honest and romantic as I do is worth seeing everyday.

  • i fucking love tim hes awesome this son is just soo ssweet Sarah is soo lucky to have married him

    im soo jelous :) x

  • There should be a 'Piano Hero: Tim Minchin' with all his songs! That you would be awesome!

  • @jonnywongo ha! yes indeedy, I've always remembered that from Ed Byrne :]

  • awsome one!

  • @CaffeinatedThinking Note here that the message is "Your love is obnoxiously inconvenient."

None of Tim's "romantic" songs are particularly valid for serenading or the likes, unfortunately. He's such a brilliant musician.

  • @Muglez14 As a musician when I hear the line 'A symphony with the sound on mute' to me, its like you know the symphony is beautiful, but because its muted you just don't know why. Plua I find both 'Drowned' and 'You Grew On Me' highly romantic because that's what love really is, it hurts sometimes, it springs up on you and can, at times be inconveient and though you don't exactly know why, if you let it, it can be as beautiful as a symphony. You can't hear the music but you know its wonderful

  • he drowned true story

  • Have you not ever loved someone who in no way deserved your love. that is real love when you love even though they are not perfect. you love them because the love is in you, not in them. this song made me cry because once i was loved like that. once i was loved in spite of my imperferfections. unconditional love is so rare. that is what makes this song so beautiful. and Tim is a genius because somehow he gets this. funny or serious, he's a genius.

  • @ascarlettoad This is actually a pretty lame comment. Everyone who has ever been loved in any way is loved "in spite of their imperfections."

  • @ascarlettoad i dont think its as real as feeling as love or more as idolization..

  • @ascarlettoad I just saw him live last night. He was amazing. As for your interpretation, this song can mean different things to different people. To me, it is about a love ending or that should end, but one person is codependent on the other and they can't break away. To each their own interpretation. That's why this song is so good. It's open to wide interpretation.

  • @ascarlettoad bravo.

  • @ascarlettoad This is the first comment on youtube that has thumbs up that isn't fucking stupid, KUDOS!

  • @CaffeinatedThinking So, where do you live? ;D

  • Wow, not at all what I expected.

  • @blade2040 - Tim might be a comedian but this song's anything but comedic; it was written for a film (Two Fists One Heart). The only bit of humour I caught in there was the self-mocking "the over-use of metaphor". Tim himself has said that he was a musician before he was a comedian.

  • The song seems more to me to be a point made of people who obsess over someone else: Unwanted infatuation that is more irritable than it is pleasurable. People like that are difficult to get rid of, and can be viewed as a nuisance. In other way, it might just resemble a failed relationship. It isn't romantic, but believe what you want to.

  • @DeathSammich On the contrary, it is entirely romantic. Romance is putting love over common sense. It's not the most logical way of doing things by far (by definition) but it has worked in history and literature through the ages. look at Romeo and Juliet, Heathcliff and Cathy (Edward and Bella for gods sake!) al of these loves can be looked at as dangerously twisted and highly unhealthy, not to mention almost impossible to maintain but they carry on anyway. Because that is romance.

  • I came back to listen to this again and decided to read some comments and they made me LoL pretty hard. You guys realize he's a comedian right? I interpreted this song as a comedic endeavor. I guess you could say it is a sincere song; regardless of interpretation it's beautiful but I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be for comedic purposes like the rest of his music. That's why I suggested he duet with Stephen Lynch (another comedic musician).

  • Contrary to some people's thoughts, I don't believe there is any redeeming qualities to the narrator's relationship. The song is sad, the narrator is either too old or too weak to start over, he may as well stay in a broken relationship. It's terribly sad, beautiful stuff.

  • @jamesbabs

I never thought of it like that, but it certainly fits. I always imagined the singer was experincing unconditional love, something perhaps he doesnt desire, but is helpless too resist. Not entirely negative; a few of the final lines seem to stand out, 'a street ahead' seems optimisitic, certainly relative to the rest of the lyrics. However the cynic in me prefers your interpretation!

  • @CaffeinatedThinking much like 'you grew on me'

    so sweet :']

  • He has a pretty awesome voice to go with leet piano skills. My first time hearing him and I'm very impressed, lol. I'd like to see him do a duet with Stephen Lynch, that would be amazing.

  • @CaffeinatedThinking I find it romantic but I don't want to marry you.

  • i always thought the lyrics were

"The straight ahead in a sideways glance"

    instead of "street ahead"

    just sayin'

  • @CaffeinatedThinking Me me me! Lol.

  • @CaffeinatedThinking I find this very romantic but I'm not a girl....What are you doing Saturday?

  • @CaffeinatedThinking In the Romeo and Juliet sense (or any other shakespearean tragedy) it is as romantic as it gets. Loving someone even though you know it can only lead to all hell breaking loose. It makes a lot of people look relatively sane :) ... and boring :p

  • I love this song. It's funny, but even more than that, it has this melody that just sticks in my head, and I love that it's about loving someone so much, you can't stop yourself from loving them, not some 'omg i loved you at first sight!' kind of thing. Tim is awesome :)

  • I love this song, its beautiful!

  • Why does everyone who comments on a Tim Minchin video have to over exaggerate their intelligence? You all realise that Tim Minchin doesn't read every single comment on these videos? Even if he did are you really so self obsessed as to think he'd even remember your user names and then make a judgement on your IQ based on some inane throw-away comment? Seriously guys. Let's stop taking things overboard. No-one gives a fuck if you're smart. They're just irritated by it.

  • @Glazenburg lol please uprate this guy's comment!

  • @Glazenburg

You don't see how this hypocritical criticism is just you trying to forcefully dumb other people down? It's not about "our" intellect, it's about you being annoying. :)

  • @Ryoroyzu Nah I'm just sick of every Tim Minchin video filled with comments that people have clearly worked hard on to sound intelligent. I actually don't see how I'm being annoying by stating the obvious. Plus I wasn't trying to ''dumb other people down''. If I was I would have tried to join in that retarded debate about one line of a verse that may or may not contradict the whole song. I was just pointing out that nobody actually cares about it. It isn't worth a debate.

  • @Glazenburg But you don't see how this is assuming your view of importances are all that will and should matter? To me there is no thing as acting smart, at least not in literature - not of any kind. I appreciate when people try to make their short, unimportant comments hold a certain grammatical sense. To me it's not about being smug, act "intellectual" or any of that. It's just about being precise, create some variety. It's just about being able to appreciate some aesthetics, not practicality.

  • @Ryoroyzu That's the first thing I can say about why I just love Tim Minchin's work also. The "poetry" of his work, it's playful! Stephen Fry is just so much better to put what I mean in words than what I am myself, but sadly I can't link to the video here.

  • @Ryoroyzu Or, I guess I can: watch?v=J7E-aoXLZGY

  • @Ryoroyzu I agree for most of what you're saying. I just think sometimes people take things 'way' too far. Your last comment proves exactly what my previous comment was talking about. You've clearly worked hard to try and make me sound like an arsehole. To make yourself sound well educated and smart. Yet the only person who gives a shit at the moment is the person you're arguing with... me.

  • @Glazenburg I'm sorry, but it's not in any way my goal to "shit on you", or any of that. I can be brutally honest about what I see, and this is what I see here. My apologies if I've gotten you wrong, but I was attacking your generalization.

  • anyone who disliked this song doesnt get it, they just dont understand genius

  • who cares if its a simile or a metaphor! just enjoy it for wot it is... a beautiful song!!

  • he's not talking about this song when he says an overuse of a metaphor... he just means it in a broad sense for nearly all love songs.

  • Argh! It's been bothering me for ages and I just realised! Sorry to say it, but the intro to this is also the intro to Everybody hurts by REM =/

  • wow.

  • @TheMoritati i think it's a griffin.

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS BONDY???

  • @TheMoritati Its obvious you dick, a Piano company based in new york.

  • @mattraisin Haha, well, I'm a concert pianist, and I didn't know that. Pretty random.

  • i love this song, it's so beautiful the way it's performed

you can download this version of drowned for free on the angry feet website

  • Ben Folds wants his voice back

  • I love the love songs, because the tunes are very beautiful and heartfelt, but the lyrics are ridiculous =]

  • If it wasn't set in my mind before. It is now.

    Yep.

    He's just bloody perfect.

  • I love Tim, man.. I'd go gay for him.

  • @AedenOC Who wouldnt!!! :D

  • @AedenOC

    Seconded.

  • @AedenOC

    Seconded

  • As the first more serious song I heard from him, I gotta say, I didn't see this one coming. <3

  • "Like Trying Not To Cough"

  • @JoraceBitchp0se ...AHEM!...

  • this is such a heart wrenching song describing the best and worst love of all time.

  • This song is so perfect for my relationship with my girlfriend. We are allways fighting. Breaking up, finding back together. It's been on and off for two years now. But we both now that we will get married some day. To quote Tim: "We are in too deep".

  • Oh man, every time I hear a new song from Tim, I find a new favourite. Gorgeous!

  • If I ever get married, I want this as my wedding song.

  • @ChelseaFanGirl ME TO IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL

  • I love how Tim can effortlessly make a song hilarious and beautiful at the same time, genius.

  • tim minchin - you explained how i feel yet again *claps*

    tim minchin is feckin awesome!

  • I envy Minchin. Really, I do. Almost every line of this song is so masterfully chosen it nearly makes me want to quit poetry. It doesn't matter what direction you choose to see it from - up or down - you can justify the similes. Letting the audience do half the work is god-tier.

  • Am i the only one who doesn't see this this song as romantic? To me it seems like a song about a person who stays with someone they don't love anymore because "their into deep".

  • @mig11280 Really? I can't seem to bring myself to hear it that way. To me it's a song about love that creeps up on you, that you don't really want but takes control. He's past the point of no return, and just wants to surrender to it. It's not a song about that fake boy meets girl and they live happily ever after hollywood love, it's the love most people have to deal with most of the time. That to me is why tim's love songs simply a level above. Listen to "You grew on me" to see what I mean.

  • @adraim69 Let's agree to disagree :)

  • @adraim69 I think to understand what tims singing about here, you have to realise that it was written for a movie. This isn't a song about Tim, or something that he would normally write. This is a song where you get so lost in love that you end up getting hurt but you care so much for the other person you wouldn't dare pull out of it. You've gone to far to pull back now.

  • @lordtwigg Damn, that is a handy bit of context! Usually I'm good about knowing the story behind an artists work... Cheers buddy!

  • @adraim69 Just trying to tell you that it's not one of his usual songs and you can't take it to mean what most of Tims songs usually would.

  • @mig11280 I get the same impression. Way too many negative metaphorical comparisons for it to be anything else, and given the guys profession as a musical comedian, it fits right up his alley that he'd make an anti-love song for the lols.

  • How can anyone dislike this song? It's so amazing! I love the way it pulls on so many different emotions simultaneously. True genius once again Mr. Minchin.

  • i know this is stupid but what is this song about...i like it, it just confuses me

  • @RickyD001 its pretty much aboutï
