I'm surprised no-one told you that the tradition for drinking whisky is the same here in Ireland too.
It is only Yanks (and Canadians) who drink whiskey in such a fashion. Gulp it down like a barbarian.
Sip it like the civilized people we are! (Scots and the Irish)
Whiskey on the rocks.. (ice) not the real thing. Mostly drunk in this manner by foreigners.
The gaelic for whisky translates as 'fire water'.
