  • Thats a difficult landing? Why? Because the plane refered to the pilots using a politicaly incorrect slur? The pilots should be comended for thier patience! I would have punched that plane in the nose! These pilots need to toughen up. GO NAVY!

  • aviation lovers, if you're interested I just uploaded a summary of a flight with air arabia, cockpit view. Very nice if you ask me, check out it out if you're interested.

  • keep pressing 5 to hear a retard

  • LOL at 1:04 to 1:09 it sounds like it saying retard

  • @TheRuneFusion

    it does

  • Funny (or insulting) as it may sound, the word that you hear is "retard". This is found on Airbus airplanes. The announcement is a reminder to pilots to bring the thrust levers to idle during the "flare," just prior to touchdown.

  • What is the altitude that the aircraft say at 0:33?

  • 400

  • The aircraft says "400 hundred".

  • sounds like the ws is calling the pilot a retard. ahahaha

  • haha I noticed that too

  • Lol yes it does but i think the Automated voice is saying "35" As in 35 feet above the ground but i dont know if he is saying what i think he is

  • where is this??

  • Funchal

  • madiera portugal

  • Dude seriously?

    No offense but....

Was it easier to type that question instead of just looking at the info box up there? It even says where it is at the beginning of the video too!

Man.. I swear kids are just getting dumber and dumber or lazier and lazier.

    No offense.... haha.

  • hahaa

  • @patton303 I feel your pain lol.

  • this gpws is pretty annoying

  • In the old day, they had to have 2 captains for this approach! Now they require aircrew with a certain no. of hours i think.

  • that runway looks very short what a landing

  • really dont see what's difficult about that landing,it seems like the pilots where really relaxed on the final approche!!!

  • Well, you can't just expect them to be panicking there. I'd like to see you make the landing, read the approach plate for that airport, it's pretty crazy!

  • It's a 90º turn starting at about 800ft AGL, and ending at 400ft and 1 mile from the runway.

All of that while skirting the high terrain on the left.

Now add turbulence and usual wind direction and speed changes throughout the final approach and the runway itself, due to the terrain.

If you look at a metar for this airport, it will always contain 3 wind indications. One for Rosário (the end point of the 90º turn), one for threshold rwy 05 and one for the threshold rwy 23.

  • To sum it all up, the rwy05 approach is arguably one of the most challenging approaches performed by large airliners in the world.

Pilots receive specific training to shoot it, and i believe it's a "captains only" procedure.

These guys are obviously calm because they have the proper training, and shoot that approach on a daily basis.

No pilot is going to fly an approach he doesn't feel safe about, but that is not contradictory with the fact that it is a VERY challenging procedure.

  • probably the position of the runway on the base of a cliff creating an updraft

  • So to you a difficult approach is when the crew are saying "Holy Crap" throughout the approach? :)

  • did the plane when they were landing say "retard"?

  • As in, "Retard the throttles"

  • Yea, having never flown an Airbus I always get a kick of of the "retard" annunciator. In the Boeings it doesn't say "retard". Do US operators of Airbus get the "retard" too or do they get an American annunciator.

  • I've always wondered if it's weird for the Captain to use a left handed stick. Provided he's right handed that is. I've tried to simulate it with my control stick in MSFSX and I didn't land very well.

  • Since most aircraft have yokes, we normally fly with the left hand (unless instructing from the right seat). So flying left handed is the norm unless you are using a stick (the right hand is used for throttles).

  • @RobertGary1 no it's the same for the side stick( on the left for the captain) and the yoke... And the opposite for the first officer

  • couldnt you literally set a plane to auto land. Im sure theres a way to do it.

  • Yes you can but only if the plane is equipped with a radio altimiter and the airport has an ILS that allows a plane to maneuver laterally though it's not strictly necessary.

A pilot cannot use autoland if there's a headwind or crosswind of more than 25kts and tailwind of more than 10kts.

    Really,

It's often more of a pain in ass to use than to just land it manually or with the help of the localizer. Most pilots don't bother with autolanding.

Many pilots don't trust it anyway. lol

  • The runway would have to have a Category III ILS approach. Only a handful of runways have these in the world. Manly at major airports or where weather is usually crappy.

  • Nope... it's visual. No ILS.

    Not even an NDB.

Pilots say it's challenging because of the 180 degree turn to final only two miles from the threshold on the approach vector.

Easy enough for seasoned pilots, but try it in a 20kt crosswind in low visibility.

  • No I was responding to another's comment. I'm familiar with this approach. It's a tough one. :)

  • from a sharpe curve he took a straight landing clsoe to landing lane. wow... nice---

  • more like an awesome landing

  • Why was half the video showing his hand on the throttle? Was that supposed to be interesting?

  • It seems more than a normal landing, nothing difficult to complain about!:P

  • uh looks like a text book landing to me.

  • pftt whatever the a-320 is a cream puff and only a noob couldnt land it

seriously get microsoft flight simulator x

  • Hellwood:

Of all the ignorant posts on my videos yours takes first prize buddy. I rarely reply to comments but yours was hard to pass up.

So by your logic I suppose that the pilot of that US Airways A-320 crash in NYC could have learned how to put a fully fueled 50 ton aircraft(your "cream puff") down gently on a busy NY river without ANY POWER and without killing anybody simply from playing a f$#king video game?

    haha...

I f%$king swear some of these YouTubengineers

    kill me.

  • couldnt of said it any better my self

  • Flew with SATA twice in the past 2 weeks. They're one of the smoothest pilots I've ever flown with. Or was it because Ponta Delgada - Lisbon is such an easy flight?

  • No i don't, i mean the plastic between the intrument and so... Its seems, discount !

  • You mean like the windows?

  • the a320 series would be a little difficult for the captain to fly as the joystick is on the left seing so many people are right handed it would feel a bit weird flying with their left hand. i guess they will get used to it, practice makes perfect.

  • I've talked to a few Airbus pilots about that and basically they said it's not a big deal.

After a short while you get used to it.

It just take a little more sim. time as opposed to the usual Boeing or A-300 two handed yoke config.

One thing a lot of pilots don't like is there's nowhere to clip flight notes like you can on the Boeing yoke. lol.

  • But you have whole table to yourself in an Airbus :)

  • I can't figure out why you bothering about it really because it's the most normal thing in pilotship to be good with both hands. This is one of the reason you must be well educated in Pilotshools. So they try to tread you rough. Flying an arcraft is really no big deal till there are some failures. That's what you only have to train and keep up later. It's the same on boeing aircrafts sometimes the Throttle is on right and sometimes on the left. See quite the same to airbus. That's it.

  • well my friend i think it does not make a diffrence 2 fly with a joystick coz if u didin't notice all the captains fly with teir left hand even with a classic control collum as in final approche (one hand on the control the other on the power levers)!!

  • The first time I flew with a stick I didn't really notice any difference. Its a very natural way to fly.

  • i love A-320 ,we have this type of plane in Romania at the Tarom company :-D

  • what is the Puma helicopters name like SA ...

  • the thing about the "stall speed" is incorrect, stalling depends on the configuration of the aerofoil, this can be due to flaps down, icing or what be it. Extra G-forces also change the stalling speed, you cannot rely on a specific speed as when it stalls. you normally feel a stall coming on and so you act as appropriate to avoid it. From what I could see, that landing was fine, didn't look bad at all. :)

  • all u simmers are dorks...an airplane can stall at any speed or attitude...its happened to me with a 10 degree nose down attitude at 190 knots

  • well done boys! this is a man's job!

  • The breaks before the app are selected on MAX??

  • Strange. The GPWS of the A320 tells you to retard the levers from CL gate to Idle gate at 20 feet. We hear the warning but apparently they didn´t do it? Or is it just me?

And another thing, the GPWS didn´t make the 5 feet call either.

  • They did do it, otherwise the spoilers would not deploy and therefore the autobrakes would not activate. The rad. alt. call of 5 feet as with other heights can be inhibited by PIN programming depending on the airline requirements :)

  • Flying an airplane is easy.

  • No skill involved in landing in Funchal? There's no ILS so it's a fully manual landing. Check your facts pal....

  • No ILS. Totally VFR.

That means that these guys have a commodity known as skill. You go ahead and try to make a 180 degree turn at a 30 degree bank angle inside of 2 miles from the threshold while staying on the glideslope at 180 knots. Don't forget to compensate for the crosswind while also being on the lookout for FOD like birds and stuff in case you do a TOGO. Which you need to prepare for also.

Oh and try not to stall BEFORE you flare.

    Don't bounce.

Doesn't take much skill at all, right?

  • i agree with you that that apporoach takes skill, but what's it when you flare? try not to stall BEFORE you flare, didn't understand that need to know pleace :P

  • i agree with patton 303 this looked like it requires skill to land but i admire all pilots out there and what they do

  • Thats exactly right because if you go below 180 kts you will stall in AIRBUS 320 or Boeing747.YES,It takes BIG SKILL to land VFR on A/P without ILS or established glideslope...Winds looked about 24MPH/30 gusts on final. Decent at about 900/min with throttle about 42% one shouldnt stall anyway with that power. GREAT landing though!!! Very Skillful Pilots!!!

  • 180 knots?!?! Vref on a 747 is usually in the 140's and lower in an A320!

  • I believe you are talking 737 Vrefs?!?! however I seem to stall below 180 in 747 with full configs on final so as I approach I throttle back upon decent to about 38-42% N1 arming speed brakes to avoid the stall which seems to work flawlessly for me.Thanks for your input though...Always open for learning something new!!!

  • The 747 at empty weight has a stall speed of ONLY 86 KTS.

    watch?v=2EqXNXWxWdk

Watch this video and listen at about 1:38. Pilot mentions Vref is 144 knots.

I know it seems strange because it's sooo big, but it's very aerodynamic :)

  • Did you ride the little bus when you went to elementary school? You're a ##$@@ moron. ----(There is no skill involved in this landing whatsoever. As you can see in the video, the pilots aren't actually doing anything because modern planes essentially fly themselves). You have no idea of what you're talking about here. You need some help---like the other guy said--check your facts shmuck

  • Madeira doesn't have ILS, buddy, which means that the plane doesn't fly itself

  • brother I think that you need to check your facts before you have a mind fart, granted that planes do fly themselves the pilots need to be trained and there is a good ten years of flying training before one gets into a cockpit of a commercial airliner

  • wow i love the cockpit of airbusses

  • it flickers bcoz of the video capturing..u try recording video from your televistyen or com..it will have the same effect

  • why do the controls flicker so much?

  • Would have been funny if the Voice guided thing laughed after saying "retard" lool

  • this is piece of cake compared to Toncontin!

  • nothing compares to kai tak R.I.P :D

  • What means "retard" that is the Airplane said, isn't it?

  • It telling the pilot to set the thrust to idle....

  • Cool vid. I'm not a pilot! I do like the flight simulator though. Can anyone tell me why my autothrottle keeps engaging just b4 landing on the A-320? thanks.

  • was this in a real airplane or a simulator?

  • that s a real landing..A-320 s can land them self.. but it takes a real pilot to land in that airport...good

  • I wouldn't know as I am not a pilot.

  • it`s a very real. if simulator, colors and graphics would be of

    otherwise

  • Why was that a difficult landing? VFR daytime.

  • that´s because the final turn is close to the runway, the closest you turn to the runway you must be more precise in the procedure, there´s no much time to correct your flight attitude from deviations caused by turbulence and/or wind direction.

  • Which is hopefully light work for an airline pilot in VFR Daytime. No discernible x-wind either.

  • exactly. i think it's not a problem for a good professional airline pilot approach to madeira. It could be challengin on x-wind. i heard that only captains are allowed to land madeira, is that true?

  • Where's the steering wheel??

  • on airbus there´s a stick

  • i wonder does the upper buttons do in an airplane?

  • your question does not even make any sense amrabas2007! Oh my god

  • mostly is the fuel tanks and engine starters what you have in the overhead panel.

  • You will find Pneumatic controllers, Hydraulics, Electrics, INS, Lighting systems, Fuel switches, APU, FDR and CVR controllers and somtimes a few other bits and pieces up there (dependent on type). Not to mention the rows of CBs that you will find immediately behind on a lot of types.

  • it sounded like the plain elevation alert was calling the pilots retards when the landed it was like retard retard retard lololololol

  • 50, 40, 30, 20, 10....retarded...pull up! pull up! last warning!. XD

  • retard =If the autothrottles aren't on (they're left off sometimes for practice), then it's telling the pilots to bring the thrust to idle by bringing the thrust levers back all the way. It's basically the same directive as when the autothrottles are engaged, but in one case it's a reminder that thrust is being reduced automatically, and in the second case it's a reminder to the pilot to reduce the thrust manually.

  • autothrottles are never turned on on final aproaches, its part of the checklist as well. some airbus pilots even prefer shooting the whole approach with manual throttles.

  • Yup.. Then you hit the Brake pedal next to the gas pedal.. hehe

  • allready died ppl there , some big years ago...

  • Retard! It hates the pilot obviously

  • Hmmm, in the "key words" list, the word "pussy" is added - what does pussy have to do with landing an Airbus A320?

    Hits man, hits!

  • Because pilots get all the action...

  • oh do they... !

  • how come the gpws has such a strange voice?

  • LOL Poor Radio Altimeter.

  • It's not actaully a 'poor' Radio Altimetre, it's because of the terrain surrounding the LPMA rwy 05 approach, it's constantly changing height, which gives conflicting sounds on the GPWS.

  • Retard lol

  • That didnt look difficult at all

  • Airbuses have a joystick-style control.

  • is there no yoke in the middle. i could not see the yoke. do airbus planes fly without yoke???? hahaha.

  • they are flying with joysticks

  • Well all of the modern Airbuses are driven with so called "sidesticks".

  • Flown :-)

  • How about Operated? We live in an FMGS /FMS world now. Im not an Airbus pilot but I believe that cute little side-stick doesnt get much exercise in normal ops - correct me if i'm wrong.

  • LMFAO "only italian pilots can do it" lol wow

can you turn down the ignorance alittle bit??? please??

    "bye"

  • Oh by the way I went and seen a video of some pilot landing on RWY 33 in reggio calabria

and the guy had like 260 foot left when he came to a stop

get a life dude... Italians are not superior to anyone one else! dickfat

  • Not bad landing, i think you had a fast decent rate near the end of the approach and that can seriously effect your speed, if you say its a difficult approach then the last thing you want to do is increase your decent rate. Ive seen loads of missed approaches in situations like yours (Training for a PPL (pa28)

  • Craig'pilot'123, apparently u r a real life pilot (make sure everyone knows!) u seriously should have been flying here instead of those guys! yea, try not to 'think' much anymore...

  • Im 14 and have started to take flyuing lessons at my local aerodrome i have built 6 hours in a pa 28 140 :P.

  • haha just love the end when the GPWS shouts. Retard! Retard! I no it doesent but it sounds like it :D

  • Actually.. It does say Retard...

  • lol! I noticed that 2!

  • Yes.. but it's deceleration retard.. not "mentally challenged."

  • yes...I know!

  • Only the European planes say Retard! Boeings say "flare".

  • esto es un A 320 ?

  • I hate this airport

  • cockpit voice brought to you by the same people who make stephen hawking talk hehe...great landing though and awesome vid

  • What is difficult?

  • That's the worst sounding voice alert I've ever heard.

  • I've heard worse...the A300 voice alert is worst.

  • also on some 747 200s isvery bad

  • very nice! ^^

  • Great flying and camera work!

  • Excellent video! Thanks!!

  • Beautiful!

  • the crew seemed very relaxed at all times...

  • Why was his monitors flashing? (at 1:15)

  • no, actually that's because of the camera recording

  • Why was his monitors flashing? (at 1:15)

  • He is changing the squawk to 1200 wich is the default value.

  • More than 2 Retards and u are!!!

  • Why is changing the squwak after the landing?

  • Yes, it seems that he not only disabled it, but changed it also. may be he set it to default value in order to not forget to set the future new code...

  • it could be that he is keying in the ground frequency for stand-by. he couldnt wait to get to the beach!

  • Sweet...

  • Good

  • ROFL RETARD RETARD RETARD

  • what was the retard, retard, retard thing about?

  • Retard means pull throttles back to idle.

  • if you think that's tough, try LDSP (Split, Croatia) Rnw 23 approach, or LDDU(Dubrovnik, Croatia) both approaches

  • do you really need a co-pilot to fly an aircraft?

  • yep

  • i agree thats a difficult landing, even if it is on a FS i cant do it,no confidence.

  • Is that Stephen Hawlking calling out the altitudes and then calling them a retard???

  • I think so. What a bastard. lol

  • hey guys i ve a question. since this airbus planes are all fly by wire, wont the pilot lose total control if there is a total electrical failure? n i think 777 also has controls tt r fly by wire. someone pls enlighten me.

  • what does it mean when it says 'retard'?

  • it means the pilot is an asshole lol! avionics rule!

  • Retard means to idle your throttle so you can get ready to put on reverse trust when you lend on the airport.Idle means put your engine trust to 0 so as to make it go negative number easier.Imagine from 10 to -10,which is easier,10 to -10 or 0 to -10.Thats almost the theory for reverse trust.idle the engine then set it to reverse. If you still dont understand i will give you my friends answer.

  • er.. another more logical answer is the spoiler don't deploy even if u armed it unless you idles (retard) the engines before touchdown, so u have to retard the engines. not doing so the flight computer thinks that u are doing touch and go or, go around thus not deploying spoilers.

  • spoilers have to be deployed before idling the engine, it can be deployed with thrust full below FL10.Beat that.Retard
