  • i just came back from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television graduation ceremony where Charles Burnett spoke to the graduates. a most inspirational man. God bless him.

  • Mos def album cover

  • This is doing the rounds on Film4 at the moment, including tonight at 11.10pm.

  • @DoctorWhoDom hehe says a year ago under your comment well it looks like its back doing the rounds of film4 this year but 11.30

  • this is the kind of movie that you that you get a fifth of whiskey, laugh you ass off, cry your eyes out.

  • The song on the trailer is SAD LOVER BLUES performed by Luis Russell. It was supposed to be in the original film during the dancing scene between Stan and his wife, but Charles literally broke the old record and couldn't find another copy. (This was the 1970s, remember...) Milestone used it for the trailer as a tribute. Interestingly, Russell's daughter Catherine did another version of it a few years back.

  • @milefilms This film wasn't even "officially" released until 2007 because of the soundtrack! Rights for the music weren't obtained until 2007 @ a cost of $150,000. Consider that against the fact the movie was shot for $10,000, over weekends for a year from 1973-74, with additional filming in 75. Some consider the movie a "lost classic". You probably already know all this considering your comments about the broken records, etc. I've yet to see more than this clip. Now I want to see it all!

  • is this a levis commercial?

  • Im in this film, im the kid that is crawling out of the garage, it was 1974 and i was 10 years old the other kid standing next to me is my brother . Charles Burnett is the uncle of my cousins, Angela Burnett , the little girl who stars in the film singing the earth wind and fire song . i always wondered what ever happen to this film and its release.

  • wait, so u never actaully saw the movie? it's considered a landmark in african american film..

  • @blink4691 that;s incredible! I'm a Phd student and Burnett came to my school to get a lecture on black filmmaking two years ago that was AMAZING. I'm actually presenting a paper at a conference in DC on this film next Friday!

  • @blink4691 Ah, that is really cool. I became aware of it because someone recommended it to me when the DVD was finally released. It really is a treasure. I don't think I've seen another film that was bursting with as much humanity as killer of Sheep.

  • @blink4691 Beautiful,beautiful,beautiful film....so proud, so awesome..if it were alive I'd kiss it...a national treasure for real

  • I can definitely see why this movie was named one of the top 25 movies in American film making history by the Library of Congress...very memorable. I cant believe this movie was made by an amateur movie maker in 1973

  • Just watched Killer of Sheep...in a word...AWESOME! I love animals and couldnt watch the sheep slaughter and processing scenes, but I loved the the rest of the movie. The reality is breathtaking and the music, fantastic. I will never forget the image of the man dancing with his wife to Dinah Washington's This Bitter Earth...wow

  • im watching this on TCM right now. Interesting.

  • i was introduced to this through Mos Def's new record. i can't wait to see this movie. i am glad it's available now.

  • same here

  • same here, always wanted to know what that image was on the estatic album.

  • @zenclive

the image appears at 47:41 it the movie

  • That little boy @ the beginning is my daddy! I rented the film & itz actually a pretty good film.

  • for real

  • yep!

  • i picked this up the other day, amazing film.

  • I just saw this in film class. Thought it was very good.

  • I saw Killer of Sheep in my film studies class and I absolutely loved it. Then just yesterday Charles Burnette was in town showing his movie To Sleep with Anger. He is such a sweet sincere man.

  • This film is truly weirdly wonderful. I saw it at the London Film Festival and was really blown away.

To think that this was a student film project, incredible.

  • I've heard about this film soo much, i should see it.

  • This movie is very much worth seeing; however it is also very much a student thesis film (although, quite possibly, one of the greatest student films ever made...) Don't watch it expecting a really strong story... it's more of an experience.

  • I saw the movie and wasn't impressed. I read somewhere that Nelson George said "it was the best movie about a black family ever". I'm sorry but to put a movie like this over A Raisen In The Sun, Nothing But A Man, or maybe even Soul Food is laughable. The dialouge doesn't hold up, and it seems more like a documentary than a movie.

  • To compare a fictional film to a documentary can surely be nothing but a compliment. That's pretty much a testament to the film's real, great acting.

  • I saw this at the IFC center when it was playing in New York. AMAZING! One of my favorite movies!

  • Saw it on TCM and Charles Burnett said it was out on DVD box set.

  • What I mean to say is that it's theatrical release was in 2007. 30yrs after he made it.

  • oh fuck. so many wonderful cinematic moments there. i wanna get meself a copy!

  • What a great reality for life as it is. Love to see it.

  • This beautiful, moving & poetic film is a masterpiece, why don't they make them like this anymore? 10 stars.

  • I know you will think I'm crazy or full of it but this is a 2007 film. Sorry man look it up. So..........they do make em like that these days. LOL but you were right with everything else

  • Actually the DVD was released in 2007. The film was actually made in 1977.

  • Burnett actually completed this in 1973 while still a film student at UCLA. It didn't play in theaters until four years later.

  • The guy from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.

  • I can't wait to see this. How is it that I've never heard of it before?

  • The reason this undeniably important film has been lost for so long is 1). It was never really 'in print' to begin with and 2). Charles Burnett never managed to secure the rights to any of the songs that appeared on it's soundtrack. Hopefully, this renewal of interest in 'Killer of Sheep' will lead to similar restorations for the rest of Charles Burnett's work, as well as similar films like Haile Gerima's "Bush Mama."

  • I'm gonna rent this from Netflix when it comes out. Read about it on Google's entertainment news.

  • I saw this recently. It's amazing. You kinda need to adjust your viewing habits to really enjoy it though. I recommend it.

  • Charles Burnett has not received the recognition he deserves. His film "To Sleep With Anger" starring Danny Glover is a toure de force. A film classic.

  • One of the greatest American films ... ever!!

  • Looks great!

  • I saw this film tonight. It's wonderful, a really poetic film.

  • I just saw this movie. What a fine piece.. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon such a gem.

  • A trailer for one of the best movies ever made. Thank God it is coming on DVD in November. This movie is superb; a masterpiece!
