  • great video. thanks.

i hope Gates was just showing his humility and being humble in his conversation there.

  • This is quite the confession

  • This is such an intelligent video.

  • @MrMoralvalues The irony of choosing Ave Maria enhances the beauty of the message. This world is all there is so far as we can possibly know. It is marvellous - do no expect nor desire more, for in doing so you show a want that is unbecoming. Seeking to learn about THIS world is our inheritance and all we can ever expect and it is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Ave Maria, Richard Feynman would laugh at the choice of a religious song to project the spirit of science.

"All I know is doubtful." Aren't we back to Socrates?

  • @traditionsHome No, Socrates was about a hundred or two years before skepticism.

  • This video is simply fascinating and brilliant, definitely one of the best.

  • It scares me not to know about the universe, because it seem the less i know, the more vulnarable the next generation could be.

  • Beautiful video!

"It is far better to grasp the universe for what it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying or reassuring." -Carl Sagan

  • simply beautiful.

  • i heard that freeman dysons sister said he was a douchebag of a brother that was real hateful to her

  • @RealeloH I've watched a lot of stuff on youtube about him, and I haven't heard that sentiment. It wouldn't shock me if it were true though. Interpersonal communication is just another field of intelligence which can vary widely from person to person. Maybe that wasn't one of his strong suits. Many people regarded as geniuses have been very hard to be around on a personal basis.

  • Capitalization-our "God"--like the faith comment Gaidenblack

  • Anxiety is because of.chemicals released in the Brain, Adrenaline , so is stress , depression is due to serotonin.

  • @Fixxxer50 That's lack of serotonin or lack of dopamine or lack of noradrenaline or lack of who knows what other neurochemical in any of a load of different neural pathways, cascades and cycles. Furthermore it's a closed box problem. As far as I'm aware nobody has actually measured levels of these chemicals in a working brain yet. Neuroscience is still at dark ages levels compared to other medical disciplines and most diagnostic decisions are still based on conversations with the patients. :-(

  • physiological states of organisms do in fact exist in as much as they are observable, measurable, quantifiable, repeatable and obey certain predictions. physiology is not a belief system as you've suggested.

    WiserMonkey889

  • This is exactly what I say when people ask me why I am an Atheist

  • yeah ok.. you say all that i'm sure. tool, fool.

  • MrMoralvalues:

Good call on the music choice. I don't know the producer of the video, but I'm sure if he has the intelligence I think he does it was purposeful. =) At the same time, it does bring a sobering feeling to the whole narration, does it not?

I respect your right to believe as you wish and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  • Sorry for not specifying; that last comment was directed to Informatheist

  • So you have no doubt that BEAUTY IS GOOD.

  • Beautiful video!

What's the background score? Sounds annoyingly familiar.

  • @suicidaljoyride

    Ave Maria by Giuseppe Verdi

  • Thank you!

  • This is beautiful and wonderful.

  • I personally BELIEVE that someday I'll get to have sex with Aishwarya Rai. Deep down, I know its true. I have FAITH that someday, if I'm a good MORAL person, I'll be able to play with her fun bags.

And it is HERESY to say otherwise!

However, until that day, I'm not going to worry about religion and be okay with not having answers.

  • Sagan trumps all.

  • Feynman trumps Sagan.

  • Notice how they never bring up religion. Yet here we are arguing about god. Can't you people just agree on something?

  • @trihflu -It's just a complete change in scientific perspective, not GOD.

  • Isn't it interesting that the narrator uses a religiously inspired song to create the feeling that he wants in this video? In the end, we all BELIEVE in something...we should never be so naive to think that we can "NOT believe". To "NOT believe" is to believe that it is foolish to believe. So...take your pick. Will you believe in God? Your own theories? Theories of other people? For me, belief in God has brought great joy...and that belief has since turned into knowledge. Believe!

  • @Elliadam84 Not believing is the standard state of affairs. You do not believe, I would imagine, in Santa Claus, nor do you believe that their are a million planets in our solar system. Why? In short, you have not been presented with any positive proof. Believing in proof is different than believing whatever strikes your fancy.

  • I agree with you. I believe where our beliefs differs is how we would define "proof". For example, my belief in God comes after many personal experiences which are undeniable proof to me. Others may classify proof, however, as conclusions reached through the scientific method. I assure you that my belief and probably the beliefs of most are based on some species of proof; the gap in understanding between people comes in what they consider proof.

  • That is amazing, I always knew I didnt know shit about anything.

    It is a wonderful feeling.

  • @gangreneousdicks someone who cares about reality needs to know this "shit".

    That excludes you, right?

  • If the men in this discussion were to read the comments here they would be very disappointed that their message had fallen on so many deaf ears. I'm not just talking about the religious people with their absolute beliefs, but also the 'atheists' whos close-mindedness goes against everything these men are discussing.

Labeling yourself is mistake number one. Do you think any of these men labeled themselves atheists? Respect the fact that you do not know.

  • its seems to me god made a explanation for everything so he can test our faith because the reason we are alive is because of this test. reply tell me what you think

  • @Gaidenblack8 I'd say that's just an arguement wich is equal to saying "look over there!" and then running away.

  • Ok, which one of you assholes had to bring up religion?

  • This isn't about god existing or not. It's about being ok without all the answers of the universe. If you beleaguer in a god it is insulting to that god to minimize the complexity, of theoretical physics, biology, or chemistry by labeling them un-natural. Science is simply a description of how the universe works nothing more or less.

  • @harvellt This post here, but for some reasons everybody thinks their belief is absolute, and for some stranger and unkown reason people think they can change another person's believes by calling them stupid.

    ^^

  • Agnostics people are seeking truth in science. hahahah MY GOD CREATED THIS EARTH AND MAN HAS DESTROYED creations by USING SCIENCE. SCIENCE IS NOT THE SOLUTION.

  • @StephanieFederico1

Your God is dead, and no one cares. IF there is a hell, i will see you there.

  • @StephanieFederico1

my God has a bigger d*ck than your God.

That was, in chase you didn't understand, a sarcastic claim to proove that claims are not evidence for everything, and a bigger claim does not neccesarily win.

  • can you stop saying my god. if you believe there is one god say "our god."

  • That is the biggest lie i ever heard!!!!! Agnostic's are going nuts this science crap. My God created this world and man has destroyed it by using science.

  • well listen here troll.. give me any type of proof that ANY god exists and i might believe your "god" created this earth

  • thats faith to believe even when there isnt proof

  • I call believeing in something without proof mental retardation, or stupidity. Stupid is as stupid believes.

  • @StephanieFederico1 Yes, by looking at reality, we destroyed reality.

    Give yourself a cookie.

  • great job, congratulations

  • im 12 and wut is this, i dont even know-

  • its saying that its ok if u dont have the anser to every thing and other ppl r fighting saying that god dosent exist but he does XD i just pwnd all atheist XD

  • Really? Dumb. Give me some proof please. And don't give me something that is a book by some unknown author called the "Bible."

  • Vieteddy: This is some great minds talking about the scientific method and looking at the bigger picture.

  • Comment removed

  • if your bible says that it took god 7 days to make just the earth then the universe must be even older then scientist predict around 10 billion by our estimates because if god works this slow he wouldn't even be done with 1% of the universe we know of by now

  • Crom!

  • I feel so sorry for you. You live your life shackled to a medieval belief system.

  • santa claus for adults had nothing to do with this

  • "The stupid man's report of what a smart man says can never be accurate, because the stupid man unconsciously translates it into something he can understand." -Bertrand Russell

All the slow heads are now thinking, "wut, I aint doin' that!"

  • this dude talks exactly like christopher walkin.....I need more cow bell

  • HAHAHA

  • That's Richard Feynman. Great character. If you get a chance, pick up "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" It's a collection of funny stories from his life.

  • I'm on it as we speak, thank you

  • You dont.

  • ...the best Humanley possible explanations

  • the official definition of science? what is it? then to me, the originators were simply discoverers, with no preconceived notion....but approached the world with: 'what the hell is this stuff?'

  • the way he talks about intuition.....even intuition can below or above potential, just like knowledge, perception, etc.

  • not knowing, this is such nice poetry.....subjective...many are thrilled by knowing more and more......it never ends is the exciting part

  • You have to know many things to appriciate that many things are so wonderfull that you can love that you know the fact that you dont know

  • ya i just said something like that. i love that i dont know and keep learning more and more i fall more and more in love with discovery and what it brings me: more&more freedom and i have lots to show for it

  • Um you may not need to know it but the reason your computer works, your cell phone, your car, the radio. Just about anything that you use in daily life was created by people like this. People who constantly push the limits of thought and come up with ways to make things work.

  • Nice vid, however that uranium atom quote is a really lame argument for free will. I'm pretty sure there is a reason why the atom disintegrates at a particular moment. Horrible conjecture by a brilliant mind.

  • go show him! he couldnt figure it out, maybe you can!

  • You see what happens when dum people try to under stand smart people, you come up with retarded shit, free will? WTF are you high.

  • Who are you to talk? You can't even spell "dumb" right.

  • Since your so smart and all, you ought to invest in a web-browser with spell check.

  • spell check can't save your incorrect use of 'your' (hint: you're = you are).

  • Ah, sweet delicious irony.

  • What if he's right? You will never know because you are commenting on videos online instead......

  • Just a guess gangrenous your 11 maybe 12 years old?

  • Very beautiful and thought provoking. Nicely done!

  • O look at me. I am an ignorant troll that likes to type in capital letters.

  • cool vid

  • b e a utiful!

  • theory of knowledge

  • You took scenes from mockmoons nature time lapse videos, didn't you ? Bet you didn't ask permission.

  • huzzah for not being scared by the unknown. why bother, who ever said its our job to know everything? it isnt. so why be scared? i suppose...because other people tell them to be. hopefully organizations like this will help some day reduce the fears of the populace. thats what i hope for anyway...

  • This is why I love science, astronomy and physics.

  • this an example of the unkown,we might as well say that the more likely trajectory is what probally happened, but what if it really does have free choice?we cannot know now,so that is what science is for,to determine the answer

  • he does not mean that the atom has free choice but as far as we know today, quantum particles have as much free choice as we do,when an atom is struck with a photon so that we may observe it,that atom is now in a totally different place that is unpredictable,if you punch a person they may punch back or they may run away, the latter being less likely, this applies to the quantum world,it is unexplainable but happens so it may or may not have free choice

  • i like chicken thats all that matters

  • @Spawn3X5 hmmmmmm.. wise words.

  • @seisendsix

    indeed

    sips tea*

  • agnosticism is not proven but neither is atheism or theism, agnosticism is having a neutral stance because we know nothing about gods,so in a way it is proven,it is not atheism as it is commonly confused with

  • science is ridding the world of predepositions and bringing us back down to earth, you are not special, you are but one of the uncountable lifeforms in the universe that has grown to self-awareness,

"Better the truth than a comforting delusion"

  • and science is not something that is left to people in lab coats,WE are the universe, science is a journey of self-discovery,not knowing the cosmos is not knowing yourself,i simply cannot live with with some questions answered with "we'll never know",i must know,or at least try to know, life has no purpose, you must give it one,and the most noble and fulfilling of these causes is science, the only reason i can find

  • Just because something happens that we cannot et explain does not mean that it has free choice. Absolutely everything is explainable but it is possible that we are not able to fathom the reasoning behind due to the limitations of the human body and of our current technology. Something such as the destruction of a star that happens just now but is 10 billion light years away we cannot even conclude anything about the date and time of the stars death for another 10 billion years. There are limits

  • I feel this way too. Without the human mind all the beauty of the universe is lost. We are the way that blind Cosmos precieves itself. We are the mind of the Universe.

I don't think that it is JUST through science that we give this purpose[although science is, perhaps our chief way,] but through all the branches of human achievement--through art for instance--or even just through our love for each other.

To say "I don't want to know" or "I don't care" is allmost a sacralige to me.

  • the reason im an agnostic is because i refuse to beleive something that has no proof, atheism and theism are just as unproven,

  • Agnosticism is proven?

  • awesome

  • what a fuck ?!

  • So, this video of agnosticism is letting everyone know that a man/woman shall not say he/she knows or believes that for which he/she has no grounds for professing to believe? 'Cause to put simply -- that's all agnosticism is. Looks to me like it is just showing videos and pictures shot from a telescope... h'mmm.

  • religion is not meant to give us knowledge, it gives us a purpose in life......sure science may explain some things...but anyone who gets too passionate might end up looking like a fool.... all those ancient greek scientists were just as passionate about their theories, if not more....(and the vast majority were wrong werent they?)

  • why is ave maria the background music for a video about agnosticism?

  • Because it sounds pretty? Unless you speak Italian, I don't see why you should especially care.

  • My thought is..... To understand why WE are her we must look at everything else around us.. the easiest to observe is germs... they simply grow and multiply without a purpose although they can influence their surroundings.... We JUST are.....best way to put it is in the phrase "Shit happens" .....

  • Exactly! ...look at bacteria, they multiply without a purpose, and so do humans. Just like dinosaurs, birds, dogs, cats, etc., what would make us so special that there would be a purpose for us. We are all just the same in the ever-changing cycle of life, amungst all galaxies in this multiverse.

  • Nice to come in contact with a rational thinker every once in a while

  • nature collectively has the potential to create something intelligent and something alive...

the only conclusion i can personally agree with is that nature itself is ALIVE and very much INTELLIGENT.. remember WE (human beings) are a part of nature... and WE are intelligent and alive.. when science ignores these simple TRUTHS it is obvious that there is some agenda being promoted by scientists..

  • now living without KNOWING one's purpose is a bogus way to live.. why are we (humans) here?

to multiply... survive and shape a better future for the carriers of our genes..

there you go.. purpose that humans are subconsciously aware of... a question that usually follows:

WHY do we need to survive?

easy.. the whole is the sum of its parts... nature (the Universe) is intelligent..nature (the Universe) is alive.. humans are part of nature

  • "the best humanly possible explanation for what we see in the world around us" ==== TRUTH

truth is subjective... nature selects truths.. which is why we observe diverse cultures and religions..

science has the unique ability of being uniform (in our world at least)... it seeks to defines TRUTHS about nature and logic behind its agents and it ALLOWS change and correction over a short period of time.. unlike religion..

  • offyam: you are wise. I have meditated deeply on this & have spoken to my new-age Guardian Angels. They told me that rocks keep themselves together because they do not wish to be banished from the Club of Rocks, one privilege of which is free coffee & donuts. Also, you seem to accept prima-facia the existance of God, yet you do not address the classic "God-rock" paradox, to wit, can God make a rock so big that he himself can't move it? *sighs* These are big questions. I need some donuts-->Chas

  • It's fascinating to learn about science, it helps me to understand the magnificent creation of our father; King Toothfairy the Third. If you don't like my opinion, I have others.

  • where was your father when i had my molar tucked under the bed?? good thing i can trust MY father santa clause.. he is hilarious and has a beard.. alcoholic too... he comes home one day crazier than usual and asks me WHY SO SERIOUS?? what a great guy..

  • @TimberX Fuck your God , It's fake .

Everyone should worship King Easter Bunny

  • fuck you. you're wrong. i'm a proud practitioner and worshipper of the great pastafarian covenant. the flying spaghetti monster knows all! >:OO!!

  • god is a hoax.

  • find it very funny about religious people talking about space jesus on this video lmao

  • "... and as far as we know it is a free choice, the atom has a free choice..."

"... that element of free-choice seems to be absolutely inherent in the world..."

Mr. Dyson then notes a connection to human minds. Is the science community admitting that consciousness permeates all matter, all dimensions, all space and time? Because how else does a rock know to keep itself together as a rock, when on the molecular level all matter is closest to being called "gaseous"?

  • The sages of human history have described God and the spiritual truth of life without going into meticulous detail as scientists do today. "Religion" doesn't explain the way things are, but what purpose is there for God to say, "Here i am, i am here"? Likewise, why would anyone begin to explain rocket science to a new-born baby? There is purpose for you, though there likely not be any meaning of the grand idea - even if you are to meld your conscious energy back into the whole of which it came.

  • what

  • one thing that bothers me is when people use religion to explain why things are. when the reality of the situation is, humans in general just dont understand everything. human scientists cant explain everything. dont replace independent ideas about how the universe is with something so simplistic. you might be wrong, but at least you arent bound by someone elses invention

  • well, one could say the same thing about naturalism - to explain the way things happen by natural forces.

I think your point is don't settle too simply for a religious doctrine that explains the things the way they are. Keep a skeptic mind, yet don't be too far as to lose faith in everything.

  • @mnfchen its so true

  • "Science is not about truths, it is about making our beliefs less false."

This very statement is presented as a truth and it is not derived from science.

Just an observation (no scientific pun intended).

  • "Science is not about truths, it is about making our beliefs less false." I think many people overlook this idea, and I wish I heard it more often.

  • Beautiful line.

Love the Ave Maria background music too.

  • God has created FANTASTIC World!

  • god isnt real silly

  • but he could be

  • You failed to see the point of this video.

  • I explained the point of this video

  • these physicist sound smart but in another 1000 years they will seem like morons....

  • If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants. isaac newton

  • @iamborghini1 same goes 4 u

  • There's a difference between being wrong and being a moron. We look at ancient greek "scientists" from twice that long ago and recognize their wrongs, but they certainly dont fall under the category of moronic.

  • Its so obvious on what there saying: QSR's research into molecular-scale electronics is inspired by the realization that the fundamental limits to the power efficiency of computation. lie as much as a factor of one billion beyond the presently known capabilities of silicon integrated circuits. QSR researchers span a broad range of academic disciplines, including computer architecture, theoretical solid state physics, electrical engineering, materials science, and physical chemistry.

    DUHHHHHHH!

  • good thing im high lol

  • im going to watch porn now

  • this hurt my head, too deep of thought.

  • I think what most these scientists are saying is, just because we don't entirely "know" something yet, doesn't mean we should lose patience or fear learning more about nature/the universe.

I will always take the long and challenging path of science over the narrow paths of religion.

  • type parker hans and liz soul into the search box

  • So pretty much you're saying ignorance is bliss ;D

  • if carl sagan is burning in hell right now ill be LMAO

  • in response to rozz2656. If there is a god and he decided not to allow carl sagan into heaven because he chose science over faith. Then it is gods loss. If god condemned such a great guy to hell for nonbelief, then I wouldn't want to go to that gods heaven.

  • suggle you are win

  • rozz you are fail

  • to make are beliefs less false ...huh i would have never thought of it that way ........... interesting video

  • what song is this?

  • Search "Ave Maria" theres a ton of different singers & instrument sounds with every version.

  • why we are here? PLASTIC

  • Wonderful video!

My only criticism is Dyson's idea that what atoms do when they choose to decay is like a "choice."

Choosing is the result of a rational or brain process. But atoms do not think.

This is "What the Bleep" mystical bologna.

But I love the rest of the video! Great images!

  • Dyson says that whether the atom decays or not is like a choice, is because he wants to connect the microscopic actions of the atom, due to uncertainty, to macroscopic functions of the mind, in other words he's delicately implying that concept of free choice in the human brain is actually because of nature of atomic "choosing" not to exist.

  • I understand that he is making an analogy between choice and decay, but in reality, the two are very different.

    Choice is very complex.

    Decay is probably simple.

To ignore the important differences between choice and atomic decay is to devalue the human mind.

  • Since our actions are controlled by neurons, if a neuron's internal structure and operation is small enough to be effected by the decay of atoms then the generation of all thought, may possibly be no more than a result of atoms decay under their free choice. But as you questioned, how can "atoms" have the ability to choose" There in lies the hidden commentary that free choice isn't actually free, its just random firings of action potentials through the brain

  • We ARE the process by which our decisions are made. The process is complex. So even if neural firings are totally determined, and even if random atomic decay affects those processes, we are still the thing that is acting.

So I am a sort of compatibilist: our actions are determined (even if in principle un-predictable by others,) and yet, we have free will.

Atoms do not choose. Our brain is the process by which choice is generated.
