The words Trick or Treat can be read from the same card depending if it is shown one way or upside down. He just rotates it to give the answer he has decided on all along. No way they are going to do a trick on a sweet old lady.

Hi Ya The reason they are so freaked out is because they do not actually know that they have been chosen to be in the show, so to the participant it's just like a normal day until something odd happens.

The idea is that the participant will have forgotten that they wrote into the show, perhaps some time ago, although Derren does send an acknowledgement usually in a black envelope, with his usual trademark logo, the victorian character with a top hat an a walking stick. However this is no guarantee that they will be actually used in the show. He studies his potential victims beforehand without them knowing. Thats how he knows what they'll do in a certain situation.

The writing on the cards are what's called an 'Ambigram,' meaning they can be read upside-down as well as right-side up. What looks like 'Trick' one way, might say 'Treat' when turned the other way.
