Fluoride toothpaste has been a huge contributary factor in reducing caries over the last 30 yrs or so. This ion slows the caries process & in turn enables enamel & dentine to become more resistant to acid attack. Nothing to do with forcing fear or scare tactics. Patients aren't forced into anything! People are wasting time worrying about this... i have to go in today in a few hours to get this, and i couldent care less. in fact, last year i had 5 of these and a root canal. i was scared to death. then i went in and got the cavitys done, and turns out No root canal! they just took out my pulp and ive been doing fine ever sence.

if you are afraid, dont be. heres what will happen:

you will arrive and tell them your there,they will call you back,they numb the tooth,in 3-15 minutes....

in 3-15 minutes they will start drilling out the decay. the total time it takes and numbing medicine it takes depends on how big your decay is and what tooth its on. i had a realy big one and it took 1 hour 30 minutes. but ive had ones so small, that from the time i walked in the door to when i left was under 15-20 minutes. the actual time in the chair was only 4 or 5 minutes.

if your afraid, ask your dentist if they will explain what they are doing, when they are doing it...

Yes. It will go down the root canals and cause enough decay to kill it. I'm a dental student and I had a patient who told me he once had a cavity that made the crown of the tooth snap in pieces. Brush your teeth and floss :)
