I negotiated and flew this heritage flight with Jim Terry, he shot the video from in back while I flew the routine from the right seat. We did it three days in a row with the C-17 flying off me in all left turns. This "slung" the C-17 out so they had to stay in the power and crank hard to make it work, which they did. The end of the routine had them break left and land, I overflew them and pulled up for a steep right base opposite direction landing facing them. Worked perfect. Dan Gryder
@brownshorts1 well at my airshow i asked the same question but i was working at it so we talked to the pilots and i talked to FAA and they said because it was a formation and the pilot had experinced time in formation
@brownshorts1 Hey Brown, I think that the approval for this went to the AETC/CC. We have to work for months to get this approved. The position is 500 ft off the wing and the airspeed is between 140-160. I was the left seat smuck in the C-17 and it was a great time!
this happend at my airshow to lucky enough i was helping run it so i heard the 2 pilots talking to echother i belive that the c 17 had to maintain about 140 and the c-47 140 and the c 17 was trying to stay with the 140 limit he was having a tought time to get to the right speed
I didn't shoot that part of the video as it was provided by the aircraft owner. I imagine part of the deal is that they're flying very low and at near landing speeds. Notice his front slats are down, and I'm told the outboard two engines were at flight idle.
Oh so Thats why i saw those 2 in the Sky that day

I'll bet the C-17 pilots enjoyed their view of the Skytrain just as much. I assume someboy passed the Grey Poupon?

Awesome vid. C47 is a thing of beauty and the C17 is an absolute beast (but beautiful as well). Never seen a C17 in the flesh but hope to one day.
