  • Yes, yes, I know 3 Dog Night did this song too ( I was there ), but the major difference is Harry's version is perfect. And you can't say that about many songs.

  • No better Male vocalist has ever lived

  • True, Harry

  • I miss you, Harry.

  • Kids laugh at me when i say he is my fav artist i may be in high school right now but no one can top harry at all!!!!

  • @dowrongbyme94

If you are being laughed at for liking this guy, don't compromise, you're on the right track.

  • One of the most brilliant writers and magnifcent voices ever! Miss ya Harry.

  • U will cry

  • Listen to while high

  • Love him....

  • he was the 5th beatle

  • @smokiebird06 go away and watch tv then.. oh wait, more ads. get used to it. at least its free for you.

  • Great song made me think a lot when at fifteen about 1

  • I just paused the video to take a dump and the video said "Harry Nil". Which made me laugh.

  • This song makes me realize how shit my life is nowadays.

  • magnolia, anyone?

  • Harry Nilsson

  • I wouldn't be surprised if the lyrics were written by randy newman

  • @Top10maniac yeah. but they wasn't. he wrote the lyrics listening to a busy tone over the phone. listen to the piano. sounds like a busy tone.

  • I feel extremely lucky that I know of this excelent musician......he was an artist.

    Nuff Said

  • Yeh saw it on fg :p

  • Im goona kill my self I dont care how selfish that is

  • Fucking totaly relate

  • thumbs up if you heard this on family guy

  • @ronalddelao1 Surely Randy Newman should top that list...

  • got to watch his career grow in real time. RIP Harry.

  • he was Lennon no back up!!!!!!

  • he should have been the 5th beatle!

  • @Robin081992 According to John Lennon, he was the Beatles' favorite singer AND the Beatles' favorite band.

  • @keeska12121 haha yes i know, and he played with john lennon and almost lost his voice

  • love him

  • ~ one ~

  • ~ ~

  • There's a reason McCartney & Lennon called him their favorite American "group" in 1968.

  • John Lennons drinking partner during his lost weekend period.

  • AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep,beep,beep,beep..." tone, writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes of the song. -from wikipedia

  • Nilsson was one of the most brilliant songwriters of the 20th century. hands down.

  • This is definately the best version of the song...They should stop covering this song. Three Dog night's version is disgusting. Very gay-like.

  • @goosing - I think Aimee Mann's version is also quite nice - although very similar to Harry's... But I do like Three Dog Night's rocking version too!! It's all good!!

  • No i,m finding Harry Nilssons music as brilliant!

  • @SYLBM Why do you say that?

  • not played this track for years...nice one.

  • one of the finest musicians...God bless

  • amazing song writer

  • one is the lonliest number..two can be as bad as one...but three is prolly better than four but not as good as two ..and not nearly as bad one is ..but 0 is considerablly crappier than 5 and 6......but 7 vould be lucky as well as eight...but nine is magic and the highest number ...so hell maybe one aint all that bad after all

  • @arkee71 true

  • juan is not the loneliest number..

  • o i like this version it has good sound quality

  • cool song always thought it was three dog night! this man is amazing

  • Outstandingly beautiful - thank you!

  • Just beautiful.

  • T.D.N's greatest song.

  • @skipper8257 It's not TDN's song, it's Nilsson's. The TDN cover of it is excellent too, though, as is Aimee Mann's.

  • clever song writing

  • I have never been too strong on Maths but this man makes things very clear for me.

  • Harry got the idea from this song by listening to a busy signal on the phone. Listen close, you'll hear it too...

  • this a brilliant slide show.

I don't need to say anything about the brilliance of the song.

    Suttieslea

  • This is a much more affecting, evocative rendition than 3 Dog Night's. It has the undercurrent of melancholy that the rock version lacks.

  • Comment removed

  • That was beautiful

  • Great bass on this song.

Harry Nilsson was a great artist. A good album to start with is Nilsson Schmilsson. Highly recommended.

  • I first heard this in Thwomps The Movie.

  • Fantastic!!! Great film flow and editing....Thank you for sharing...Stay Gold...

  • This is such a nice and calming song.

  • Wow, it´s amazing!

  • Filter did it better.

  • Thanks! This is Great.

  • Absolutely amazing talent. To learn more check out the documentary "Who Was Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him" on Netflix. Fascinating story.

  • @mikeincalifornia Harry is so very amazing. Singing all the parts & overdubbing them--on tape in those days! You know, this has a sadness to it, the video, because of Harry's decline. Its in the vid if you look, and it makes me mad at alcohol! All that hard livin' took its toll on his choirboy voice, and there are later recordings where he can't even sing. Avoid the "newer" stuff & stick with his early years. They were choice and sweet! :)

  • @mikeincalifornia Oh but it's so HEARTBREAKING.

  • @mikeincalifornia

I totally agree! he is sorely missed. Too bad he didn't go into rehab and begin a healthy

lifestyle like his dear friend Ringo did!

We are blessed to have all he left us.

I am always amazed at his effortless phrasing and singing ability!

    Happy Christmas!

    Emily

  • So, do todays "artists" really need autotune?

  • @jackms1979 Yeah they definitely do, because none of them are this talented.

  • Great work c

    _ veru moody

  • I always thought this was a Beatles song.. isn't it still?

  • @MentalSelfMutilation i think your thinking of three dog night

  • He WAS a remake king. Everybody's Talkin' was a cover and his biggest hit. He did a full album of Randy Newman songs.

  • @lukepleaseshutup you don't have a clue.....i'll bet you think alien ant farm wrote smooth criminal!!!

  • @smokrz8mykids What do you mean? I love Nilsson's originals and I love his covers. And who the fuck is Alien Ant Farm?

  • @lukepleaseshutup Do you don't know much about Nilsson. He was a prolific writer of his own songs -- and was covered by early every big artist of the day, and had a string of his own hits, mostly written by him. Paul McCartney and John Lennon stated, repeatedly, he was their favorite singer/songwriter. They knew more about such things than you.

  • @jimfocus69 I know that. Nilsson Schmilsson, The Point (the greatest cartoon ever), and his first two albums had some of the greatest songwriting of his time on them. I'm saying he was just as much a covers man as he was an original songwriter. That's what takes tremendous talent. Being able to do both effortlessly.

I don't see how you deduced all those facts about me simply because of 3 sentences. Don't be so quick to judge.

  • @lukepleaseshutup "He WAS a remake king." No, he wasn't.

  • @jimfocus69 In addition to being a songwriting king. I think saying he isn't both is limiting. I like his originals as much as I like his covers.

  • Dear God, what a voice. Magnificent.

  • @chellewoolley

Or say "chellewoolley is a douche" for writing another annoying comment like that.

  • like if recess schools out brought you here

  • I'm from the 90's and I praise these songs..

  • It's nice to hear the original version!

  • This song was so fucking hard to find.

Now that I've heard it I decided that it was worth the hours finding it.

Now time to find the person how really sang it if it was a different person.

  • @051dragon Harry Nilsson wrote this song. It was made famous by Three Dog Night and again later by Aimee Mann (featured in the film Magnolia), but you found the real thing here.

  • He was John Lennon's favorite singer/artist.

  • @katydidscorner Yes. And they were friends, too. Nilsson is on Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" album. Plus, I hear Nilsson influence in some of Lennon's other 70s stuff. Especially the song "Intuition" on Lennon's "Mind Games" album.

  • @dkelly26666 they really remind me of each other.

  • 12 people are the number 1.

  • @UberLegitVlog 12 of them? they probably arent very lonely. Quit being a desperate for thumbs up!!

  • @gregscott42 I know it was the cover of a Nilsson Greatest Hits album put out in the '70s

  • Is this the Original of the Song? Did i already found it?

  • @Scrapcrab Yes, Harry Nilsson wrote the song while he called someone and he heard a busy signal (true story).

  • A superb song from a first class songwriter. Aimee Mann did a wonderful version for the film "Magnolia".

  • anyone know where the initial image on this video is from?

the one with his right eye that looks like the picture has a hole in it when the "harry nilsson - one" title comes up

    thanks.

  • The Beatles were influenced by him, too, they were crazy about him and vice versa (and of course were friends).

  • 11 people didnt get nervous and got shot

  • Whoever disliked it was tripping harder on that acid Nilsson and Lennon were on when they began hanging out in 1974 lol

  • Huge Beatles sound on this one

  • peaceful music

  • Excellent

  • Whats up with the one eye thing (illumanati) damn they got harry thats probally why he got all sturng out and basically failed just kidding the devils not real lol

  • 1018 vs 11.........FIGHT!!!!!!!! lol

  • who disliked this? I want to know why because i will take you on!

  • @theropeDanswer

Oh yeah? Suppose it was Jeffrey Dalmer or Hannibal Lector? Or something really scary, like a ghost, or a muslim?

  • I would stomp 'im!

  • He sounds like Elliot Smith.

  • Thank you for keeping Harry alive. My favorite singer and songwriter of all time.

  • I only gave this song a thumbs up so I'd be #1000....definitely prefer the 3DN version

  • my friend makes fun of me cause my name is juan. so he sings "juan is the loneliest number"

  • @octofruit hahah at least you take it with humor :D

  • @octofruit Yes! Only friends can get away with that. Tell him this song was written for you "Juan...

    Sir David

  • @octofruit hehe you think you have it bad..... Juan is my Last name

  • @octofruit i feel you, my names julio hahaha, nah but for real

  • @octofruit

The only thing dumber than your comment is the 90 people that gave it a Thumbs Up. Morons - all of you.

  • @octofruit i don't think he's your friend Juan....

  • Great song also Example made good use of sampling this track.

  • @ElectricPharmacy Which tune was that?

  • Much more impact in this (Nilsson) version. This is the best version I've heard of him singing it. Thak you

  • amazing

  • Also Al Koooper's version is great.

  • Bit of trivia the background is actually the busy tone on a phone he wrote this song while listening to that tone for 3 hours.

  • just one....

  • @Izziana your fuckin nutts

  • @Izziana pussy but original the dood wrote it.

  • @Izziana Three dog night made this song unlistenable.

  • @Warhero1025 thats a bunch of bull they brought it to a new age of music

  • I wonder...this song was three Dog Night's very first hit. Did Harry write this song? I'd really like to find out.

  • @Toastmlt Yes--Harry did write it.

  • @rulabean He did. He said that he was on the telephone and got a busy signal, and he just stayed on the phone and listened to the busy signal and wrote this song.

  • @Toastmlt Yes Harry wrote this song. 3 Dog Night covered it, and it was a major hit on their debut album.

  • anyone here because of magnolia

  • @msouth5049 no.

  • anyone here because of magnolia?

  • @msouth5049 Yes, Aimee Mann was a better version, with more and better production..but without the original that version would have been never possible ...

  • Nice song and good attempt at videography... But however did all those effects went overboard to the point where it was annoying... Seemed like someone wanted to use his full library of effects :p

  • Actually, Nilsson wrote many songs that were covered by other artists - this included which was covered by Three Dog Night. He was not a remake king in any respect other than that he made an album called "A little bit of Schmillson in the Night" where he pays homage to jazz and swing greats of the bygone era..... or something like that anyway. I have it somewhere. He was one of several music geniuses of his day.

  • @ThePhatboy3 Yes!!!!!! He was the best!!!!!!

  • @ThePhatboy3

he also did an album called nilsson sings newman with all newman covers

  • @ThePhatboy3 Pretty amazing! Yes, he wrote hundreds of songs which were sung by others. But I love this version of "One" more than that of Three Dog Night. Harry was definitely "One" of a kind! He deserves much more recognition than he ever received!

  • @ThePhatboy3 Actually Nilsson did cover a Badfinger song., "Without You". But his arrangement was so transformed it was could barely be considered the same song. Much better vision for the song. Everybody knows Nilsson's version. You can find Badfinger's on YouTube.

  • The purest voice that ever was :)

  • One of the purest voices that ever was now sings among the angels of time :)

  • One of the purest voices that sang among us now sings for evermore among the angels of time :)

  • Nilsson was an accomplished songwriter, and most people would kill to have written ONLY one song in their entire life that would be as popular as this one. However, most people don't create much of anything anymore but complaints.

  • pure class , rest in peace buddy

  • For the Australian rave up qausi/faux psych version from 1969 do a tube search for John Farnham One.

  • This was the remake king! I cannot give it up to people who nothing but covers - even if he has good takes on them.

  • @n0gar this is the original...

  • @destinrm: I stand corrected - on this one. He is still a remake king with very little original hits. Maybe you can correct me again...

  • @n0gar Harry wrote Without You, (as in can't live, if livin is without you,) the coconut song (you put the lime in the coocunt), I guess the lord must be in New York City, Everybody's Talkin", the moonbeam song, Remember (Christmas).... No, he's not known for his covers, he's known for his meliflous voice and crazy ass partying. Rest in Peace, Harry.

  • @jhank708: Bad Finger wrote Without You.

  • @jhank708 nope, he didn't write 'without you'. and he is known for his covers - three albums worth (at least).

  • @jhank708 Fred Neil wrote Everybody's Talkin'. But Nilsson's version is great.

  • How did I not know this was written by H. Nilsson? Ahh!

One of the most versatile songs for films & them movin' pictures. Just awesome.

  • No other "ONE" song can out beat this classic!!!!!!!

  • Nilsson writes "One" (and records a great version)... Three Dog Night covers "One" and makes it a smash it. They have a great interpretation, no doubt.

Badfinger writes "Without You" (and records a great version)... Nilsson covers "Without You" and makes one of the greatest recordings of all time.

    We all win.

  • If a person is killed in an explosion, do they still say Rest In Peace at his funeral or do they say Rest In Pieces? I've always wondered.

  • @smokiebird06 -_-

  • i am 29 years old; i wonder why they dont make music like this anymore? Good band and good voice.

  • Because music like this requires musicians....Ya know like....Fingers on a keyboard, sticks on a drum, a clear mike without processing and a piano r
