  • You are in good shape. I hope anyone reading these comments or is thinking of a rim to rim realize that fitness is paramount. I have been researching the rim to rim hike extensively. Park rangers emphasize the dangers involved. I fall into that 40 to 60 male range where 50% of the fatalities occur. Scared the crap out of my wife and I. Nonetheless, we still are preparing with excercise, hiking, cylcling, and soccer. Our canyon hike is pending full physical medical examinations. Thanks.

  • Thank you. Yes, I would agree, the North Kaibab is pretty well shaded during the afternoon. In addition, it is also the steepest once past Cottonwood and 1000 feet higher than the South Kaibab. But a moonlight hike......ahhh, can't beat it, whole different world when hiking in the 'Canyon'. Done plenty of it. If all goes well we plan to do a hike to Horseshoe Mesa in April and a five day rim to rim in October.

  • May I compliment you on your video presentation of you adventure. Very professional and inspirational.

We are also planning a South to North hike because I understood, from my rim to rim friends, that the North Kaibab trail was less subjected to the intense sun, that time of the day. (compared to the S trail). Would you agree?

I suppose maneuvering down the North Kaibab trail at night would be comparitively chalanging. We are planning our hike close to full moon conditions.

  • We took plenty time for rest and soaking of the feet in Bright Angel Creek, primarily because we went from the South Rim to the North Rim. It's a bit of a devil considering the North Rim is a thousand feet higher than the South Rim. Planning is key, of course, so if you can hike north to south it would be a heck of lot easier. Conditioning is important walk/run up and down hills as often as you can. In the 'Canyon' it's easier to walk up at a steady pace, than down, your fighting gravity.

  • We are also planning a rim to rim trip in autumn this year. One of the ladys is nervous regarding the 15 1/2 hour trip. I have friends that did the rim to rim in about 18 hours c/w 4 hours of stoppage including a nap period. Did you guys stop for a rest?

    Terry

  • That's about 10-15 times worse than my first time up Quaw Peak. Nicely done. :-D

  • "...for our first and no doubt last rim to rim hike in the Grand Canyon...."

That's what I said my first 5 times doing "rim to rim to rim" or "rim to rim", yet I keep going back.

  • Nice job Sargent...Good perspective of your passion...Thanks for sharing!
