When I was a kid Boston was a violent and very racist town. Every night we were in the NBC news for riots in wake of the school desegration. When I joined the navy we were treated like royalty down south , they called us " The Little Rock of the North ". Today Boston is one of the most liberal differsifyed cities in the Union, man talk about historical change before your eyes!
once upon a time (1979?) people grew up kind of segregated in new york city, we (I'm from NY) basically stuck with our own kind , the world was a little different back then. that's why in NYC there's Chinatown, little italy, Harlem,Spanish Harlem,williamsburg,etc.etc.
@Meody I agree with you on that. I don't know why they put these lyrics in the song. They might as well ahve included. Italians, Native Americans, and Hispanics. Just doesn't make sense to me to add those words. Guess they could not think of anything to write in that one part of the song.
give it a break people it was the 70's just comming off of the civil rights movement and people thought differently and the person who sings this is black for the record.
Blacks got all the honey, jews all the money, and the gays have all the fun because they dont hide who they are! Wonderful song! Thats why they hate us! LOL!
1977-79 was the summer of my youth. I laughed a lot, drank a lot, I danced a lot, made love a lot. I took a big drink of life and do not regret any of it. Only now have I learned that being young is more a state of mind than anything else. Rock on!
@casketkey who ever u r u dont realize thats is actually a spiritual song in disco....she says somewhere far away w no blacks no jews n no gays....meanin in that beautifull place we will all b someday. there is no racism in gods land!!! get it?
@itsmet989 I'm what I'm who ever u - r .... It sounds like she hates who she mentions. I don't hate anybody maybe dislike some but not because of who or what they are.
why are blacks, jews or gays are looked down as bad ppl?? this is why our soceity is so screwed.. Im black & I would never judge anybody by the labels this world puts on them. let's LOVE not HATE!
Born in 1979. mAma did you go disco dancing when you were pregnant but never told dad? because i feel i heard this song before and with this one too many disco more!!
@robertmarc1 Actually, what the parents feared the most happened to their child. Instead of gaurding her from the "undesireable Blacks, Jews & Gays", she turned out to be an undesireable herself by turning into a whore with no scruples. It reflects the Bronx though. We all up here in the Boogie Down!!!
The meaning behind this song is simple - don't listen to the judgmental, homophobic and racists people around you, just be yourself. How is it that so many folks seem to misinterpret that?
@j4kn1f3 some people can't grasp the concept of this song because they are just too stupid. I feel sorry for them. When this song came out, I was 13 years old and I immediately got it
This song was the balls. they played it in every disco along the east cost back in 80. I guess evryone could relate to it being young with family being very strick and then heading out on your own. I know I did and I been on my own since 79.
Pablo and Carmen Vidal, Just had a child, A lovely girl with a crooked smile, Now they got upset coz the Bronx ain't fit, For a kid to grow up in, Let's find a place that's safe somewhere far away, With no blacks, no Jews, and no gays, There but for the grace of God go I, There but for the grace of God oh, go I, Poppy and the family left the dirty streets, To find a quiet place overseas,
@Khultan And year after year the kid has to hear, The do's and don'ts and the dears, And when she's ten years old she digs that rock 'n' roll, But Poppy bans it from the home, But for the grace of God go I There but for the grace of God go I, It could me it could be you no, it couldn't be,
@Khultan Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak, Popping pills and smoking weed, And when she's sweet sixteen she packs her things and leaves, With a man she met on the street, Carmen starts to bawl, bangs her head to the wall, Too much love is worse than none at all, There but for the grace of God there go I There but for the grace of God, oh go I Doop doorup doorup doorup Doop doorup doop doop doorup Pablo and Carmen Vidal just had a child....
Hey.....Just wondering if you happen to have "this version" of this song. That would be the unedited version that actually has the lyrics "popping pills and smoking weed" in it. Hard to find. If you do is there any chance you can post it? Thx......
@aretinoj I have that version but it's on this compilation of a Mantronix cd called, 'That's My Beat' it's this and music of the late 70s that heavily influenced his musical style, unfortunately, I have that and many other music CDs in storage in another state. Actually, I don't know which one here but on your right, someone HAS uploaded the original version and I love this song so much that I typed out the actual lyrics. Look for it. I forgot who the poster is.
This song is over 30 years old, yet the ironic message in it is still relavent today. Think "immigration", folks that "flew" to the burbs, but are now "trapped" in their "McMansions". lol. Great tune and interesting message.
Even at disco's height in 78-79 this song was clearly innovative, as if it represented music - and life, as least my friends' and mine - going off in a new direction. And the urban style of NYC (and Philly's DCA Club) at the time (and the New Prelude in New Hope, Pa): non-stop dancing in straight leg jeans (polyester pants? NO NO NO!)
I wasnt until 9 years after this release was I even born, but thanks to my parents I was exposed to disco. I got to say, this song is a classic. This entire cd is great. this is still one of my favorties. I wish i could have been at a party while they were spinning this and maybe some circus disco.
