Thank you so much for all your responses.. You have all been so wonderful.. I thoroughly enjoyed this role and was so happy to be able to sing this song. Again, thank you.. :) Tracy...
@heartlandcutie13 So Hannah, i wanted to comment on the Astronomically small odds that you and I watched the same video, and that i also wanted to say this...
You, Ms. Silva, have a wonderful voice! It's so nice to hear this song sung with such control and ease! Have you been classically trained because it sounds like you have! Again, wonderful, almost prefer it to Audra McDonald!
Sarah, the lady singing, was in love with this jazz player and she got pregnant with his child. He left her and she never told him about the child. In those times it was such a stigma to have a child out of wedlock and because the father was gone she barried the baby alive but another character found the baby and saved him. This is song his how Sarah explains her actions to her child. Hope that helped! lol
gfhxo,i performed in Ragtime b4 so i'll give you an accurate explanation!the character Sarah got impregnated by a ragtime pianist,Coalhouse Walker Jr.he loved her but didn't know that she was pregnant&he was way to focused on his music. she was in such despair that she buried her baby alive in a garden, like the way she buried her love for Coalhouse. The character Mother found the baby&called the police and Mother insisted that she let Sarah and her baby stay w/her.
Yeah, I know, our school just finished this play, this was my favorite song, but I was changing during it because I was on the scene before it as a fireman.
Tracy is my good friend shes not on broadway just yet. She is in massachusetts doing concerts. In fact shes doing a concert at the same thetaer she is performing on in this video. Company theater in nowrel MA. Go see her.
i think she is on broadway... I want this solo song at my school but I'm not good enough to get it :'( Poor baby... "I buried my heart the ground! In the ground! When I buried you in the ground!"

Great song. Sung by a physco mother who tried to kill her baby cause it reminded her of her ex husband/lover/boyfriend. What a mother.
[I'm not talking about the lady singing hear, just the storyline or whatever.]
