This language is not Tagalog my friend, it is ilonko.
Ilonko is a language from the island Negros in the philippines.
The language Ilonko is spread out all over the island but it comes orginal from an area near by Mambukal named Don Salvador. Wikipedia gives wrong information. I know this for sure because it is my aunt's native language ! second reason, i come there sometimes and i recognized the language, so i asked if Freddie is born here. anwer yes, but moved to Manilla
A more fitting translation to the repeating last line or coda ("Nagsisisi; at sa isip mo, nalaman mong ika'y nagkamali") would be, "Regret...And in your mind, you realize, you did wrong."
(part 3 translation) "And so the days passed." (The Tagalog phrase here actually implies decades, so the child of the story is now an adult.) "And your path, lost. You're mired in vice and addiction. And the first one you crept up to? Your crying mother. And her question? 'Child (Anak), why'd you turn out this way?' You didn't notice--your eyes filled with tears. You had regret filling your mind; you realized you did wrong. Regret now fills your mind; you realize you did wrong.
(part 2 translation) "....(But) they won't let you be; can't do anything about that. So you've suddenly changed. You've become hard-headed. And their advice, you've discarded / disobeyed. Not once did you think that all they ever did, they did for you. 'Cause all you want is to go by what you want---so you ignore them."
I speak Tagalog. Here's my translation of this song (coming to you in parts): "When you came into the world, (what) huge joy your parents had! And their hands were your Light. Your Mama and Papa were clueless (about parenting), so they kept watch over you, even as you slept. By night, Mama would lose sleep preparing your milk (formula). By morning, Papa would gleefully keep you in his lap/carry you around. Well, now you've grown. You want to be "free"....
There's an extra dimension of pain for this song. Aside from being about a prodigal son's guilt for breaking his parents' hearts, this song was one of singer Freddie Aguilar's more frustrating experiences as an artist. He composed it when he was still poor and naive, and didn't know his rights as a composer. He lost rights to his song, barely earning money from it, while it was reproduced with impunity (and bad translations) in other countries.
And now your path has gone astray Child you ain't sure what to do or say You're so alone No friends are on your side And child you now break down in tears Let them drive away your fears Where must you go Their arms stay open wide Child you don't know You'll never know how far they'd go To give you all their love can give To see you through And God it's true They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here
How many seasons came and went So many years have now been spent For time ran fast And now at last you're strong Now what has gotten over you You seem to hate your parents too Do speak out your mind Why do you find them wrong Child you don't know You'll never know how far they'd go To give you all their love can give To see you through and God it's true They'd die for you, if they must, to see you near
When you were born into this world Your mom and dad saw a dream fulfilled Dream come true The answer to their prayers You were to them a special child Gave 'em joy every time you smiled Each time you cried They're at your side to care Child, you don't know You'll never know how far they'd go To give you all their love can give To see you through and God it's true They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here
I'm Dutch, and I saw Freddie Aguilar in his bar in Malate. I've been to some pretty big bands, like Pearl Jam and some other big names, but nothing gripped me as much as his performance together with his kids in that bar.
Oh, danke, danke, danke !
the history of this song is sad but that is how life is and yet his name is known throughout several parts of the world. I thank my parents for raising me and this song is the one of the greatest ever written if not the best.
I love this song and his other song Bayan Ko.<3 They both make me want to cry and feel a lot more pride in my country. If anyone else can recommend any other songs by him, I'd love to listen to them. Us Filipinos gotta stick together, right?[:
i used to remember this song when i was young.i used to cry especially i never met my mom she died when i was only a baby.now i'm a mom and will always love it.thank you sir ,for the wonderful song.
I have never outgrown this song. Thank you freddie. I now have my Mother hooked on it as well. She listens to it daily. I had her listen to the original first, then the English version by Freddie. I left the USS Midway in the Phillipines in 1979. I flew out from Clark AFB. I miss the people there. I wish our Government would work with the Phillipine Government, to get bases back in the Phillipines. I can tell that the new generations are loosing the English Language. I hope to return someday.
Freddie Aguilar is SO STUPID. Ellen and Oprah got Charice BECAUSE they saw her performing english SONGS they could relate to -- and they thought that Charice deserved to be heard by people OUTSIDE THE PHILIPPINES. How could Charice connect with the foreigners who are taking care of her if she sang Tagalog songs??? TANGA! Besides, Charice is NOT YET in a position to demand what songs she can perform. She's just a newbie in the industry who follows what she's told by her handlers, Duh!
@luvpinoys do you know the history of this song? Even if it's in Tagalog almost every country create a translated version to spread its meaning. Can you even feel the meaning of this song? I pity your parents on how you turned out to be.
Yeah, I been looking for this original too. All I could ever find previously were the song as a backdrop to other videos. So this is great - my favorite Filipino pop song classic of all time! Thx.
Incidentally, for those that don't know the translation, it is very similar to the lyrics for Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle". The tune is very similar too - it came out a few years after Cats in the Cradle, so who knows if that's what may have given Freddie the inspiration.
i really love this song from the buttom of my heart...i hopely find my parents.... to say how much i thanks for them,,and i love them so much,,even though, i havent see their image.... juan_angkie@yahoo.com
Now you got older, and you want to be free They may not agree but there isn't anything they could do Then you suddenly changed, you became hard-headed And you disobeyed everything they've said Didn’t you even think that what they're doing was for you? Because you want to do everything you want You don't mind them anymore
Anak When you were born into this world It was your Parent’s happiest time And their hands became your light And your Mother and Father didn’t know what to do, Observing you, even in your sleep At every night your Mother stays awake just to prepare your milk And every morning you’re with your Father, Who's very proud of you
@diamondbacktip: I can give you the actual literal translation, if you wish. I speak Tagalog. The English translation just given to you has removed the very specific, very cinematic scenes which singer-composer Freddie Aguilar painted with the fewest words.

I'm 17 I grew up in Philippines I moved to England with my family six years ago, this song makes me sad and also makes me realise even more evryday how important my parents are to me. :)
I will listen to this beautiful and meaningful song over and over a thousand times if time permit. I'm a Singaoporean living in Australia and have been to Manila. Pity I did not have the chance to meet Freddie. Maraming marami salamat Freddie for giving us such a beautiful song. Mabuhay to all Pinoys.
This was the very first filipino song i've been introduced to in 1980 in Germany by some Filipinos. Now i'm here and still not tired listening to Freddie. What a difference today - switch the radio on and you can see what i mean ...
@nalvojo I agree in every point. I 'm from germany, too, and i got introduced to this song in 2000 in Zamboanga City MIndanao. It were the first days of my daughters life and I'll never forget this time and this song.
I like this song very much, because it remembers me always,
how friendly the people in this country are.
I meet him in Hobbit House, never forget this moment.
I am look forward to come again soon,to your friendly nice country,
Freddie
Maraming salamat sa inyo,...
