hi thanks for the video- I'm trying to fix my PS2. I did it once before with this method, but the second time when the error came back I tried to tune it up again but I forgot the tray, so when I put it back together it made a grinding noise and I was worried the lens may be scratched. Would I be able to see with mag if there's scratch on lens? I also broke a tab which grips tray, but I glued that back on. Is there any # gear tick that you find works best? Why isn't it a fixed position?

@TAPFOLKS50 have a look and think about what it might do, you can usually understand these things with a bit of basic knowledge and thought. not 100% sure myself but it looks like it pretty obviously connects the power reset button (green) and the disk tray button (blue) to the relevant parts, maybe the board and the actual disk tray. if it came disconnected you might be able to re-attach it with solder - i'd be tempted to have a look and see if this was possible.

@jheyc013 i had the same problem just put a game in and it wont read , just slighlt press the lid ( sometimes u need to push it harder) and it should start spinning its not a permanent fix but thats all i do to get it started. p.s dont press to hard or u will mess up the lens or the lid

Another thing to look at before messing with that white gear is if there's enough grease on the worm drive gear that moves the lens.

When they make these things they put low grade grease on there which dries up about 6 months after your warranty runs out.

i was watching a video on you tube showing how to fix the disc error. it said to be careful with the silver tape which is connected to the power and eject button.... so i was being careful but some how when i was trying to put the lid back it came loose now it wont turn on .... is the silver tape broken or did it come loose only

The silver tape or ribbon cable can easily be put back into place by reconnecting it to the power eject button. You take the power eject button of the inside of the console, it's only connected by a plastic pin. Just take it off, reconnect the wire, and put back into place. Be-careful not to break the plastic pin, as this is what keeps the power eject button in place.

@OldSchoolGameVault I accidentally lost my Plastic Pin but fortunately I managed to make another with a thin Hard Plastic (And it works). Though My problem right now is that whenever I Enter a PS2 Game it won't read and just eject it. Please note that it isn't a disc read error as the laser wont fire and also it seems to be connected to the problem of the motor that controls the ejection of the disc

I fixed mine but I didn't have a disc read error it had the grinding issue. I regreased the rails and problem solved. My girlfriends PS2 somehow doesn't play blue cds and PS1 black cds. It does play PS2 clear discs. I'll try this tip.

i had that same problem one time.........solution : the two stainless steel rods that the laser eye glides on need to be greased.....metal rubbing aginst metal needs to be greased every now and then use vaseline.........hope i helped

@MythBusters619 There is a SCARY Metal Screw thing inside, The PS2 is Manufactured with Grease on the Teeth, when it drys out, it cant move and the Pointer is Grinding on the Screw because it needs lubricating, you need to put Grease back on the long laser screw, that wont stop the noise completely but will help it a lot , and eventually when the Grease settles in it will stop making that noise.

Hey, i liked the video. I'm having a bit of trouble getting it to read the disks though. I Cleaned the the lens/laser and then i marked the starting point. I've moved it all the way clockwise to the big notch ( i assume your not suppose to go passed that or can't) and i've moved it up to 24 notches counter clockwise.12 notches counter clockwise is what it's at now but only works perfectly with FF10, i got it to work with RE 4 once but it wouldn't read it after that one time.what else can i do?
