  • @hondacrazy123 it's not just what loknar86 says. There's four points where you can hit your opponent. Head, torso, wrists and throat (trust). That's why he was also shouting "men" (head) and "dō" (torso). There were some wrist stirkes in there but I didn't see and troat strikes. That's surprising seeing as their obviously have a high enough rank to perform it in competition.

  • WTH? They sound like cats fighting....

  • You can see those head hits coming a mile away. Just turn the sword up to your head and block it. They are like posturing cats screaming... lame.

  • @joeyisfunny Around the three minute mark they stop sparring and start a training exercise. He's supposed not to block those hits.

  • Looking at the guy in black made me want to dub Darth Vader breathing sounds over this video just for fun.

  • Comment removed

  • either it's Ki or amazing camera shaking effects

the video resonates whenever they clash

  • @SalokinRechra Its called stomping the floor that the camera is on.

  • @joeyisfunny

    some pretty powerful stomping then

  • I give him 70-95 years old. He is very healthy indeed to pawn an 8th dan just like that.

  • ㅋㅋ 왜 꼭 한국 다큐에서 따왔니?

  • where do u buy these equipments??? i live in orlando,fl

  • Can anyone explain me why the grandmaster is letting the opponent hit the head?

  • @VSteper They spare in the beginning until the Sensei gives an opening and the student should recognize and take it. After that they go into a training exercise.

  • An inspiration to us young folk :)

  • why do they shout?? is that the spirit thing to hype you up?

  • @hondacrazy123 kind of yeah its called "kia" easy translated its a fighting spirit your body, the sword, and your spirit have to be synchrony or you can not have a point in a match. on the other hand its much easyer to get in to the mental state of fighting in your mind with the "shouting"

  • @loknar86 That is only partly right. Ki means "Energy" Ai means "Harmony". A Kiai is a shout to harmonize your energy with your body and action. (Harmonize sounds retarded, a better translation would be "synchronize").

In Kendo you shout the area you ant to hit with your Kiai, So you shout "MEN!" if you aim for the head, "DO!" if you aim for the breast, "KOT!(E)" if you aim for the wrist and "TZKIII!" (Tsuki) if you aim with a thrust for the throat. If you make a hit without Kiai, it wont count.

  • Why is their a ww2 argument on this video? I assume most of us who do kendo are here because we like to hit men.

  • What does hitler have to do with a kendo video? pfft

  • Pure skills, I'm a 9th kyu

  • He blocked off quick strikes without access movements and strike the opponent in the tinniest, quickest opening, this old guy, better not mess with him

  • AHHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

THIS IS SO FUNNY, 2 PEOPLE YELLING AND WACKING EACH OTHER WITH STICKS

  • @MrIPhonemaniac Sure, how about I whack you with a 2kg 'stick' while you yell, isn't that sooo funny

  • @MrIPhonemaniac Funny how canadians talk about fighting. When was the last time you guys actual did anything?

  • @DStrike0083 if you have to ask then obviously you are uneducated in it....try using a book sometimes, it really helps increase knowledge

  • @MrIPhonemaniac book? No wonder canadians are worthless. while you idiots read, we americans killed hitler. You know about him don't you?

  • @DStrike0083 LOOL you guys dind't kill hitler at all, you guys weren't even in world war 2 you just got your asses bombed and you sent nukes to heroshima

you guys didn't do anything to help britain, or russia

  • @MrIPhonemaniac the fuck are you talking about? Great Britain and the US coordinated the attack on France and then took Paris releasing Hitler's hold on alot of Europe on a march to Germany, resulting in Hitlers defeat it was a joint effort.

  • @mrct592 lol shape up on your history, you dont know anything about what happened

russia's red army defeated hitler, america did nothing but fight with japan

  • @MrIPhonemaniac Americans landed at Normandy.

  • @BytheBeardofYmir yea at the END of the war LMAOOO

  • ive never done kendo and i dont know much about it... i do kodenkan...but gosh the old man kicks ass totally controlled them

  • He controlled the 7th and 8th dan like 4th dans control 3rd kyu holders. Man this is impressive.

  • 5.20?????care to explain??

  • @BafflinBook Its one of the Dan testing requirements I'm pretty sure. It's demonstrating I think it was called something like Akieshiru or something about that...

  • @BafflinBook It's just a traditional kinda of thing. Usually the way to begin/end practices, I believe.

  • @BafflinBook It is called Menkirikaeshi, a common exercise in Kendô. One strike to the helmet (men) forward, followed by taiatari, a strike with the body (physical contact meant to break the guard of the opponent). Then 4 strikes forward and 5 backwards to the sides of the men starting with right temple and alternating. This is done 2 times in a row, adding a final strike to the men which "goes through". Check the wikipedia page for "Kirikaeshi"

  • His Ki must be very strong. You can feel it almost through the video...(no kidding)

  • @MrIPhonemaniac

It is not a sport, it's Martial art, and try when you could you will see if it is ridiculous

  • @cricrilolo13 : you dont have to explain it to a stupid kid,hes a frog in the well.

  • @cricrilolo13 LOL my 5 year old cousins do this all the time :) they must be a international champion then!

  • @MrIPhonemaniac Kendo is a grueling martial art. Please don't judge from your outsider's perspective. I can only encourage you to pay a visit to a dojo nearby your place and try for yourself.

  • @cederikleeuwe LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • @MrIPhonemaniac Fag. Would you like to go up against one of these kendoka without any armor? Do you think would win because of your ninja skillz?

  • @MinerlyCrafted i dont like yelling and smacking people with sticks, sorry not my thing

  • how do you win or get points

  • @KiyoCukuma

Difficult to explain, you have to yell out one of the four places you can hit (men, do, kote, tsuki) in high spirits, with an accurate, strong, deliberate strike to that spot in correct posture, and then you need to return to your stance fully ready to strike again, physically and mentally.

  • watch with the eye young students and you will learn

  • wot does the white suit represent? is that higher than a normal dan grade? im new to this, because the old man seems to know wot he is doin

  • @hondacrazy123 White generally represents purity, its a trend for only high-ranking sensei and women to wear white

  • @hondacrazy123 The keikogi color has nothing to do with anything. There are 3 colors which are more common for Keikogi: black, dark blue and white. Although, I think there are more colors available now. Still, most dojos recommend either black or dark blue for all kendoka.

  • ROFL, I'd jack that old fart up with ma pool cue easily.

  • @MrBrunothedog You would get destroyed :-)

  • When the 9th dan moves, he shows no effort in his technique.

  • The white guy was all beaten up, what is so good with him anyway, his name?

  • @AhmedHan : I'm pretty sure u dont know anything about kendo

  • @tyopmt Yes, I don't know anything about Kendo :)

But from the looks, white guy is being beaten up.

  • @AhmedHan He was letting the other guys learn the winning cuts. (It's how they teach in keiko) If they were actually fighting, he would be all over them.

  • @fkreller1 Then, is there any video of his in which he actually fights?

  • @Doved101 He could have taken those guys out in seconds, but it is a type of ceremony and he doesn't want to discourage them too much

  • Please teach this name of a music.

  • This is what im gonna be when i grow up

  • thats me screaming on the bathroom with diarrea

  • I think that this old guy in white is Jedi. If not, he could kill everybody xD

  • wow white is GOOD. and he's like 82 lol

  • So were can one learn this, I think after kajukenbo im wanting to learn this

  • @Doved101 becuase this is not a competition.obviously the "white one" is the 9th dan kendoka, and 9th dan used to be offered just to kendokas that helped the world's kendo grow so he is no ordinary kendoka.and the blue one is just sparring,a friendly match and at the end, usually, the sensei just lets him hit some strikes to see how he strikes and usually uchikomigeiko/kirikaeshi

  • @Doved101 i think this is a ceremony or something. or he just like it S&M

  • OH SHIT HAHA I THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA FIGHT BLIND FOLDED

  • this reminds me of the ultimate fighter on discovery channel. one night, there ws a match between a 60 year old karate master and 20 something year old boxer, a new kid, but healthy. 15 minutes later the boxer beats the living fuck out of the old man and quits. it was one of the funniest show ive witnessed.

  • holy sh@t. if someone actually screamed at me like that than id get a heart attack!

  • Woow 9th dan, now that's really awesome. He must have been a kendoka since he was born o.O!

  • Whose making all that damn noise?

  • @TutorialTelevision

    its part of the sport

  • @TutorialTelevision the referree

  • I'd poo my pants if I ever had to spar him!

  • @raceface please search

    Please

  • other guys so energetic old guy is just like take it slow but he obviously out classes all of them but why is he fighting so defensively

  • does not look so good on the old man

  • look at that old man he screams kiyaaahhhhhhhhhh

  • 日本がこんな大変な時期だからこそ、もっと剣道人口が増えて欲しいと思います。

  • Do you need to scream?

  • @SolidKrycha it's more of an intimidation tactic than anything, but it's quite futile to attempt a psychological attack on a 9th dan anyways, hope this helps

  • You ever hear the phrase "don't bring a knife to a gunfight"? This is the exception.

  • man this is fucking amazing to watch. i wish I was there.

  • .. wtf is this? o-o

  • これはいい試合稽古。

    付属の音楽はとても、似合わなくて嫌だけど。

  • at 3:07, did the 9th dan hit that guy from the back?

  • @fingerprint211b

sometimes sensei do light hit or little bit push you in kakarigeiko if you are to slow

  • Can anyone with a clue explain what this is about? Obviously it is a kind of ceremonial fight.

@all the idiots posting bullshit below: obviously you are blind! Can't you see it is 3 different guys in black, and all 3 do exactly the same stuff in the same order?

This kind of exercise must be a kind of ritual as part of the graduation of those 3 in black.

Anyway, anyone who knows what this exactly is about, please post ;D or pm me.

    Thanx

  • @Jiyukan

The elderly man is one of the few surviving 9th dan's. First they're doing ji-geiko, - freefight, next kakari-geiko - continuous attacks by one part and kirikaeshi, the bread and butter exercise of kendo.

  • Interestingly, an English yeoman with a 160lb yew longbow and the back of his trews pulled off to let out the dysentery would own this man's face before he even got into town. Great to watch all the same. Very cool.

  • Well, it could be a demo, but still, the old guy stands like a samurai

  • those were some epic yells.

  • Kyu Dan?!! I thought the 8th is the highest attainable! What does one need to do to get it? Conquer armies with a fart? O_O

  • Kyu Dad?!! I thought the 8th is the highest attainable.. O_O. What do you need to do to get the 9th? Conquer armies with a just a thought?!

  • Im kingdah of lost on how kendo is given points. the black dude was going crazy and barely hitting lol

  • Obi Wan Vs Darth Vader

  • Mr. Taniguchi, You've finally completed my unfinished thought of Honoring the sword, I will enter in Kendo, and do my best. R.I.P.

  • awww.

i thought it was a match untill i read the desc.

    (demo) :(

  • Mr. Taniguchi really was a awsome person... think, how many people with 82 years old can do half that man does? I'm a shoshinsha and i cant do 1 per cent of wat mister Taniguchi did.

  • The man of white clothes is Mr. Taniguchi, at this time, it was 82 years old. However, he passed away at 88 years old in 2009.

  • Who is that western person at the end (b/w) looking at the master?

Some known kenshi? National team player or s.th.?

  • 9th dan,wtf.He can killlllll theeeeee wooorrrllldddddddddd

  • @06Kajmeran ye ...but he is old. Old age decrease your reaction a LOT . Even his mind is much wiser , his body cant keep up.That said he is still amazing :P. Most man at that age stay in bed.

  • I'm not that familiar with Kendo.

Why does the master let the other Kendokas hit a men?

  • @chucknorrispranks

Don't tell me your Koryu stuff. I am 6 Dan Kendo and Iaido. I know about him. I bet you'd better not fight this old man.

Whatever you use - you are lost.

  • @wacki46 what about a gun? lol

  • @Wreckagemaster

    good idea-dude!!

  • 03:22 - Kirikaeshi Men.

  • He is really master of Kendo = Way of the sword.

  • why do they yell funny stuff?

  • The few chances we get to see an 8th dan get treated like the many of us =P. This video was great! thank you very much ^.^

  • I have no idea what is going on??????

  • is he dead already??? i mean taniguchi sensei??

  • Is this old master...Gouki perhaps?

  • I see some comments asking who the sensei in white is,

but I don't see any answers.

The sensei in white I believe is Taniguchi Yasunori Sensei.

  • Guy in black: "KYAUUUUUAGHERAHHH!!!!"

    Old guy in white: "...guh."

    awesome

  • @FellBlade9 heh heh heh! great description!

  • @FellBlade9 heh heh heh! great description!

  • I'd love to know what the running text at the end says.

  • RIP Taniguchi sensei

    I wish I could've practised with you..............

    Sayonara

    Fellbeast17

  • Is the kendo player in white creating openings for the student to attack?

  • @Epicurus13 Yes, at first it was free fighting then training such as Keiko and Kiri kaeshi. all these things are demostrated how it should be done. Other use this as a example for their exam.

  • I wonder what's the meaning of the running text at the end of the clip?

  • if lightsaber duels are based partly off kendo....then why hasn't anyone ever tried a tsuki in star wars

  • @USBYDProductions---Because a lightsaber has a 360 degree cutting edge. A katana doesnt.

  • @samdonelly7 but a shinai does...and i was talking about tsuki as in "throat strikes"

  • @USBYDProductions---No, lol, you cant cut with the mune of a shinai. But, I understand what youre saying. The reason why they dont do it with lightsabers (although its been done) is because it doesnt serve much purpose in a battlefield situation where you can run and jump and move around more than a collegiate martial art. Lightsabers have no real rules.

  • Why does he let them hit him on the head towards the end of each one?

  • @splattyfish This is a kendo drill called kirikaeshi, which is intended to build accuracy, speed and stamina while maintaining a correct posture. It is one of the most fundamental kendo drill, and also traditionally you have students performing it at the end of practice to have them unleash the last bit of energy they have in store.

  • @bakdosh Thanks for explaining it to me!

  • well i can tell you one thing the start of the video mostly consits of sitting and TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW WWOWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HEEEYTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOGYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA..... yes that exactly...

  • 3:23 - Why are there only eight strikes in his kirikaeshi?

  • The secrets in Yagyu Shinkage Ryu (Kenjutsu) in English

    watch?v=FfhtYKQ-iU0

  • I think you all miss the point. The skill displayed by the Kyudan is intense and shows his Ma-ai, tai sabaki and poise or kamae to be strong and decisive. Yet he moves with little effort. It is what we Budoka aspire to. It is rare that a Kendoka Hanshi such as this man demonstrates his craft to the public, especially at his advanced age. It is a pleasure to watch a real master and not some 'self proclamed master" display his skill after 7 decades of training and study. I'm Just a beginner.

  • i LOVE this EPIC music

    I miss kendo D;

  • Why is the one guy being so aggressive? Is this a show match?

  • omg! He kicks ass!

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • the white dude who enters in the end must be like: "ok guys i brought some cold beer n nachos, anyone?? oh crap i missed the fight!" :)

  • 谷口安则老师已驾鹤西去,鄙人只能凭空吊唁

  • did it say he was 82 years old?! 9th don... DANG

  • Why he let them to beat him in the head sometimes? Looks stupid...

  • @DrRodent

it's a comon exercise in kendo.

  • @DrRodent its a demonstration match... that is an exercise

  • His 'do' is devastating O.O Wish my kendo was even half as good.

  • lol, the one in white would have won straight away if the other guy had little armour. 1:54, blocks and cuts his stomach :P win xD

  • Comment removed

  • I wish I could see it in slow motion...

  • rarely see a 9th dan kendoka @@... i heard that 9th and 10th dan kendoka need certificate from Japanese king ?

  • yooo... the master gave those guys the opportunity to hit his open areas....if he felt that they were too slow or insufficient, he would counter....this isn't really a match, it's more like a silent teaching session

  • Overpowered old man is overpowered.

  • @lamyunholic wrong. watch it again with your eyes open.

  • what is name him??

  • i don't understant why they have to yell like babies

  • @dereshishishishishi

    its a sign of aggression.

personally, i dont think they sound like babies.

but maybe thats just your ears

  • @dereshishishishishi you will never understand the human body and the extent to which it can manage external entities.

  • @genraz "you will *never* understand..." you've said it all, already. and btw non sequitur. If kiai stimulates adrenaline glands in the upper lungs, and "scares" the opponent, that doesn't mean that it is beastly and unelegant.

  • @dereshishishishishi okay mrs.pompous

  • Was this Kendo like a Kata from karate? since all the participants had to do the same. This was really inspiring.

  • now is it just me or does it look like he lets them hit him in the head a lot?

  • @TommyBShow Yes, it looks like he lets them hit him in the head. I think, that he doesnt want to show them, how weak they are in front of him. Personally i think, hes maybe old, but he would beat them all. But thats only my opinion.

  • Whats his name?

  • Listen to his Kai ...its so low but its got serious presence

  • @jadewillow agreed!

  • i dont really dont like kendo because its just to see who hits the person first with no style basically

  • @Kisukefan123 meaning it doesn't look like a cartoon?

  • @Kisukefan123 Are u High? what are you smoking?

  • @Kisukefan123 kendo is the basis for what the samurai learned its not like the movies where they clash swords for ten minits most fights ended in one strike

  • @Kisukefan123 Think about this for a second. If you're being flashy with your movements, you lose concentration, and thus you die.

Hence, Indiana Jones --> The Arabian ninja guy was all like "DOUBLE SWORDS HOO-HA-HOOOOOO".

Indy pulls out a revolver and shoots him in the face. This has the same theory behind it. Don't be flashy, be subtle, and wait for the perfect moment to attack.

  • @Kisukefan123 thats what real life combat is about. not about being stylish or flashy. but being quick, and attacking your opponent first.

there isnt much use for kendo today because of our modern world. but it shapes the mind better than any martial art (and i've taken many, trust me)

  • @Kisukefan123 there is plenty of style. you just have idle eyes for this kind of thing

  • @genraz Could you explain me please the complexity of kendo? Unfortunately I can't see much of a technique either, the strikes seem all the same to me but I'm interested in understanding the challenge of kendo.

  • @MaximilianDeLaHire Footwork; how close do you get to your enemy? One step too close or even a half-step too far from your opponent could end the match for someone who isn't well-trained. It's about knowing yourself enough to manage an unknown opponent's attacks. Conscientious breathing, in it's entirety, is an action that involves the self to voluntarily create effective measures of movement. This is why the strikes are not all the same. Some moments are true for an individual & some aren't
