not to be picky but actually transonic refers to the condition in which a range of velocities of airflow exist surrounding and flowing past an air vehicle or an airfoil. Air flow velocities are concurrently below, at, and above the speed of sound at the pressure and temperature of the airflow of the air vehicle's local environment (about mach 0.8–1.2). But the pilot would've been in a world of trouble for breaking the sound barrier so close to civilians, windows and the like.
Awfully close to the speed of sound, you cannot here the plane on it's approach only as it passes the camera point. I know the wind is slightly against him but nevertheless.
Nice Video but he DID NOT break he sound barrier here. I was at this show. the Prandtl-Glauert Singularity is commonly assoc. with breaking the sound barrier, but not always. In the case of the F-18, the shape of the aircraft often will cause the "Vapor Cone" to form when it is flying close to the speed of sound, like in this vid. Had this aircraft reached the speed of sound, it would have caused a s. boom that would have brkn every window on the beach & landed the pilot in a heap of trouble.
@mrsaadali Uh no it didnt,That is a vapor cloud that forms when the plane is nearing supersonic speed,If there's no really loud boom then it isnt super sonic.
One of the better videos on youtube, nice job.

You're absolutely right. Transonic, by definition, means "close to the speed of sound", The F-18 was transonic, not supersonic.
Thanks for commenting.

Sorry, I know what it means and must have read it wrong. This is a great video though, 5 Stars! Excellent work!

This is not an F-4 Phantom. This is an F-18 Hornet.
