kathak has nothing to do with gender , infact none of indian art is bounded to any particular gender . wazid ali shah , the ruler of awadh himself was a grat kathak dancer
@tripmonk0 Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing. Pt. Maharaj has a sense of grace and class that Pt. Das cannot imitate! Thanks for posting this video btw!
@tripmonk0 Actually, yes, they're both from the same Kathak Gharana (Lucknow). However, within the same gharana many different personal styles can be found. Pt. Chitresh Das seems more focused on footwork and stage audience performance especially geared towards the non-traditional audiences. Pt. Birju Maharaj is from the family of pioneers of Kathak so he balances the traditional and authentic Kathak traditions with his own personal style - technique with everyday objects and playful imagery.
@tripmonk0 Have you seen Chitresh Dasji live? They are same gharana, but he is also Jaipur. If Birju Maharajji, certainly a great artist, danced even half the speed of Chitresh Dasji his dance would change. When Chitresh Dasji dances thaat and vandanas he is so gorgeous and precise. When he is doing the highest level of upaj actually MATCHING speed of tabla bol for bol the goal is not just aesthetics it's rhythm. Educated people know the difference and how to appreciate each.
@AshokBhatnagar007 I've learned from disciples of both Das and Maharaj. I learned speed, precision, and multitasking from Das. But I wanted more than that. So I switched schools and learned how to dance with beauty and subtlety from Maharaj's disciples. I really admire Maharaj. He is truly the master of Kathak! His disciples are the most beautiful Kathak dancers in the world!
It had been over 5 years since I left dancing. Watching this video, I felt an outburst of emotions to start dancing again and then I learnt the first "tukda" he has shown here. Of course I can't do it as well as he has done. But it felt heavenly to dance again.
Length weakens the quality of the dance. I realize one is telling a tale, but it is still a dance and short is always sweet. Shorter versions would be so much more alluring and easier to watch without getting bored of monotony. Great overall and entertaining.
@darklord47 Oh I LOVE the dance and he is fantastic. I was not commenting on one dance but most Indian dances (songs tend to be that way too) and what I am saying is that many times they seem to be too long and would have a far greater impact on the audience if they were just a bit shorter in duration.
@gursaran1001 that.....is not really true.....unless like he said, the dancer isn't good............i could watch Birju Maharaj etc. for hours and not get tired!
@gursaran1001 One has to have an understanding of Kathak to know exactly what is going on. This is Gat Bhaav aspect of Kathak where characterisation and emotions are given prime importance and the more the detailing is done in the story the better the atmosphere is created and the mastery of the performer is shown. It's in contrast with the Darbari style of Kathak (aka mujra) where a recital is done for the pleasure of the audience., or even nautanki.
my Father Ustad saddique Manganiar Master Of Khartaal he have with Jugalbandi with Maharaj ji.you see sampravaahi is my new kathak and manganiar music programme on youtube.samandar manganiar
His babyish expressions in Krishna's bearings-and of Yashoda catching and punishing him- and the two patching up- make my eyes brim! I just joined my hands as the video ended. What an evening! Tomorrow (24/08/2008) is Janmashtami! :)
He is the "Father of the Kathak". I am single drop if he is the Sea.There are no words to explain about his kathak dance. In One sentence, He is the Best.

@AshokBhatnagar007 I hardly think so. Just look how messy Chitresh Das is compared to Maharaj-ji!!! Nick

@kushjani01 If you now Kathak then you'll know it's not all about speed & dynamics. Without Bhava/Rasa there's no 'insides' to the dance.
