'In pains of grief, dear Lord we leave thee'. When we performed this amazing work, we were blessed to have Adrian Thompson as the Evangelist, Neal Davies as Christus to mention but two. An experience i will never ever forget.
@marcam1122 Bach's music was inspired, informed and motivated by his faith. But that still says absolutely nothing about the veracity of his inspiration
ascoltare la musica di bach vuol dire amare la natura, tutto l'universo musicale è rinchiuso su quella piccola tastiera su cui bach, il magistrale, componeva...
Others have commented on the tempo. It *is* slower than I'm used to hearing this magnificent music, but I think Stenlund and the performers make it work. I do not find it "draggy", because it doesn't become sub-divided, as slow performances can become. (Too slow, and something written in 2 can sound like it's written in 4, in unskilled hands. That is not the case here.)
Thanks to the uploader for sharing this beautiful performance with us
Lovely performance of an extremely thoughtful conclusion to one of Bach's greatest achievements. Also the extremely respectful and contemplative silence after the end of the chorale.
If you have the opportunity, discover Hans Rott (Symphony in E Major) and also Franz Liszt's Christus. They are quite as sublime as Bach's inspiring works, and much more easy to become addicted to.
Bach was an opportunist I think. He was employed by the lutheran church because that's where the money was. If he were alive today, he probably wouldn't have written so much religious music... That said, I'm eternally grateful that he did write what he did. I love his music, this pice being one of my favorites. Anyway, enough debate. Let's just enjoy the music.
This is absolute my favorite performance. The speed is very good and not so fast as some others and the choir is excellent. Impressive, touched, thank you.
@philipjensenhorsley This was not hating anyone; but rather, the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; finally everyone on earth was blessed by God's Mercy. I hope you have a great day.
Thank you for this upload, this is the most moving and tender chorale of the Passion, of course and if Bach was still around to write or edit music and movie scores, he would undoubtably be the best in the world as he was here in his own time with such a magnificent contribution in the Passion and the B minor mass. If there is a heaven, his music must be played there.
this is one of the greatest sound ever heard on earth (perhaps universe) thanks to J.S. Bach.
however the beauty of this piece or any other of Bach's masterpieces has nothing to do with religion. Yes bach was religious but he didn't create such beauty because of his being religious. It was but an inspration to one or perhaps the Greatest man through all history of humanity.
@hogsprinc I disagree with you, I think if you had asked him, he would've said it was the Spirit using his abilities, and that he was blessed beyond belief. He certainly was a man who lived for God. I feel his music has alot of spirit in it, he was very spiritual. It's very uplifting.
@hogsprinc I agree Bach (and lvb are) is the (2) best compositor(s) ever. I cannot imagine that someone in the next centuries can achieve something at 1% of their level of musical perfection. the golden age of music has ended before 1900, we can just imagine what it was to live in the same moment of these creators.
@LoranBXL Thats simply not true. Many phenomenal works were composed in the 20th century. Even today, great works are being produced, but just as JSB himself, will likely not be completely appreciated until after their time. Para example, I encourage you too look up the works of the modern choral composer Eric Whitacre. He is only in his thirties, but he is world renowned for his sublime music.
All this to say however, JSB will always be king ;)
Personally, I find the tempo progressing precisely as it should. It would be beyond revolting to hear this section of this piece with a minute waltz as it target goal.
No one else but Bach can conceive of a composition like this one. He remains an indisputable Baroque genius.
This is music making that makes the welkin ring! It must have been an inspiring performance. The tempo is the slowest I've heard, slower than any f the Munich Bach Choir recordings or videos. Comparing this tempo with the Munich Bach Choir on You Tube with Karl Richter demonstrates that RIchter's tempi are not romanticized as he is often accused. Larger forces often make for greater choral richness when done right. This is done right. Passion sung with passion.
It's wonderful to sing this version of St. Matteus Passion. This conductor, Dan-Olof Stenlund, really gives you, as a chorist, a chance to act and express the music and the true meaning of the Passion. Not a single time have I been able to sing Choral 54 without crying. Another thing that makes this performance extraordinary is that we sing in Swedish, our naitive lanuage, wich makes the message even more accessible for the audience.
This piece is called "We sit down in tears". Somehow I think that this interpretation is not inappropriate, from a modern sense, of course. Bach's tempo gusto probably wouldn't allow the piece of play so slow.

I loved the way the singers "sustained" the long notes. I thought it was beautifully sung.

Sublime composicion del maestro Bach. 9,54 minutos en carne de gallina. Y en mi modesta opinion una version muy buena.

I've always thought that classical music had the odd property of being both over-glorified and under-appreciated.
That it is mostly enjoyed from afar, underneath a glass case as a relic of the past; possessing no relevance.
This song, however, cannot be over-deified. It's beauty is unexplainable; and it's relevance, eternal.
