When bills come to my mailbox I just smile write the check and go about my day... how about you? My secrete? The Instant Downline a new forced matrix recruiting system for North American Powers business opportunity that builds my team for free... automatically! Get the details in my channel.
This is a wonderful performance. He nails it. He does it like a salesman shining on a customer. His choice. Theatre is SUPPOSED TO BE OVER THE TOP. That's why it's theatre and NOT TV OR A MOVIE. Geezh.
I wish this production was on DVD or something. Spacey doing Eugene O'Neill sounds wonderful. I plan on buying the version of Long Day's Journey Into Night with him, Jack Lemmon and Peter Gallagher on video on demand soon.
This small snippet has lost nothing from my experience of seeing Spacey live on Broadway. He is a phenomenal Hickey. I have been a huge O'Neill since I was in HS (about 40 years ago). Plus I am not without experience. I've also seen Jason Robards as well as Lee Marvin (who took a number of shots by critics but was very enjoyable in this difficult role) , if I had to pick one JR is without peer, but Spacey is a very close 2nd. Don't forget overacting & sales go together like hot dogs & mustard.
He's really amazing. Those saying this is a bad performance need to realize this is acting on a stage, not on film. Stage acting requires BIG. Big voice, big gesture, big impact. Those sitting in the back row won't see an actor squinting or doing something slight, unlike in a movie. Kevin Spacey is one of those amazing actors who know the difference and how to execute it perfectly.
I never thought I'd get to see even a few seconds of Spacey's performance as Hickey, but now I have! I can tell that his rendition was incredible. Thanks for posting.
you know what? i really ignore what he's saying in this scene..but i'm almost crying for his interpretation...God he's so so talented...this is an actor!

Act Two. Harry Hope's Birthday party, all the usual gang is tense because Hickey is forcing them to look at themselves and give up their "pipe dreams."
Go to the website of Clement E. Blake. You will recognize him immediately. Then, click on the link to "Iceman Cometh" monologue and enjoy.

A surprisingly bad performance from Spacey.

How is that bad? He was acting in a play, not a movie. It looks over the top, but that's what you do in a PLAY in simple terms.

@Timthethespian89
I agree - those that complain have obviously never been in a play and realize the audience in the back needs to see everything - it all must be BIG.

Spacey is one of the best actors around, but he wasn't convinicing here, he was overacting in my opinion. I'm glad that you noticed that too.

"I don't give a damn about......anything any more"
When he says "anything any more" his voice kinda drops.
but he's kevin spacey, so it's perfect.

I agree. Every move he makes is perfection. No one quite like him in this day and age.
