  • Richard Marx Rocks! He knows what music is and what its all about. American Idol is a bunch of karaoke and to show how bad people really can be. I also agree with him on that their is still great talent on the show (Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, just saying is an examples of that) and that Randy Jackson is an awesome bass player.

  • miss his hairs :(

  • OK, Richard, you've finally earned my respect, not that you needed it anyway. Spot on!

  • absolutely right

  • AI = humiliation contest

  • I 100% agree with RIchard. Most of the guys on 'American Idol' have no talent and make fools of themselves.

  • i want him!!

  • Yes !!! I quite agree with you @kim020887 ! I have been a professional musician & Luthier ( Guitar Builder ) for over 30yrs now. So I know what its like to slug it out night after night in the club circuit, & it grows you up fast. You starve & work your ass off ! Which in turn makes relationships difficult to manage. Yet, that kinda life gives an artistic person a wealth of life experience to write about ! You gotta pay dem dues before you can play dem BLUES ! Right on kim !

  • Richard Marx - a guy with integrity and character..

  • @mistabones1000 American Idol is the REAL REASON today's music sucks. I'm 24 and god knows Bieber and Lady Gaga sucks in music. I only like the old school stuff. I was born in '87. And a musician should strive harder and not to audition for a show like American Idol. Do you agree with me, mistabones1000? DOES ANYONE AGREE WITH ME?

  • @mistabones1000 not only today's music is a tick turd like you say, mistabones1000, one word also sums up today's music (which I hate of course): WORTHLESS. REPLY BACK, mistabones1000.

  • There once was a time as a musician, that you had to pay your dues ! And I know that sounds contrived, but it really is not. This atmosphere of practicing in your home, & then auditioning for "American Idol" to make a career is not good for growing intelligent songwriters ! They must have many years of stage & life experience to hone their craft, or the music will be just a worthless blip on the radar of musical history ! Todays music has the emotional value of a Tickturd !

  • @mistabones1000 well Marx is right here, mistabones100. Today's music sucks now man. AI caused music to suck to where it is now. And mistabones1000. Do ya agree with me?

  • Richard Marx is right, American Idol has CAUSED music to suck now. Anyone agree else agrees?

  • @kimv020887 100% agree. Plus he is better looking and has class and original in his work.

  • I agree with Richard and he is amazing

  • @WorldwideWakeupCall I agree with Richard Marx. AI is the REAL reason why music sucks now. REPLY BACK.

  • still really cute

  • This is awesome. And, I just discovered that he wrote "Surrender To Me" and just heard his version with Lara Fabian. It's pretty much my favorite song right now.

  • I agree with Richard Marx. American Idol is the REAL reason MUSIC sucks nowadays. That's why I revert here on YouTube to AVOID not only the music I hate today but also American Idol. My mom had just stop watching it. We should go here on YouTube instead of watching AI. Anyone agree?

  • Its really lame for him to capitalize just on "bad singers"

  • Richard Marx is 1 of only 4 artists in pop music history to have 3 or more songs reach # on Billboard in the same calendar year. The others are The Beatles, Madonna, and Boyz II Men.

  • @Grapes428 don't forget The King of Pop Michael Jackson (RIP), he also had 3 songs in the Billboard.

  • @kimv020887 I was saying artists in pop music history to have 3 or more songs reach #1 on Billboard in the same calendar year. And yes MJ had Beat It, Billie Jean, and Say Say Say reach # 1 in the 1983 calendar year. I did check that.

  • @Grapes428 thanks. LONG LIVE REAL MUSIC.

  • I love Richard Marx, this guy is so legit. Most of his big hit songs were dismissed a lot by DJ's before they made it big, he hung in there and did his own thing with just his producer. Now you got all these ways and outlets to become famous that you could have someone else do all the work and make you famous. And it just takes 1 well-known person to give in. I hate American Idol as it supports the one-hit wonder system.

  • Richard marx only looks like he's in his early 30's.

  • I grew up with Richard Marx's records... listened to all of them... sang along to them... know all the lyrics.

And although I outgrew his music with the years passing (because it's pretty commercial music to begin with)... I'm pretty sure I would'nt have felt so connected to it if he'd be some superficial dumbass that won some kind of singing contest.

But then again... like he wrote himself: "maybe we can learn a thing or two from everyone".

    That is... *everyone*.

  • good to see a talented singer against some american idiots show. this American Idol can really shows how bad people can be, you are right on Richard.

  • right in the button richard, finally its said.....american idiots show is a joke!

  • Richard Marx is a freaking legend! He's a lyrical genius, and a talented singer.

He looks great here, by the way.

  • que guapo està este mae... viejo viejo pero bueno bueno :P

  • This guy is a real talent, great songwriter, singer and musician. Plus he's got a brain and is hot. As for American Idol, I don't watch it. Period.

  • Randy Jackson was a great bass player. Listen to "Satisfied" on

Repeat Offender. The doubled bass on the end of the song is

    really cool also

  • nice one richard. this show is getting worse and all the dumbass voters are voting for the idiots. what a legend.

  • Woohoo ! More Kudos for Richard !!!!

  • Richard is a genius...PERIOD.

  • I"m with you theart1rm...i'd hate anyone who trashes Richard Marx's songs

  • I'll add my say to the list too. I have never watch AI. Never will. Not my idea of music like I want to hear it and I definitely hate hearing someone really, really trash RM's songs.

  • ive only really discovered richard marx at 24. I always knew the right here waiting for you song but holy shit this guy has a whole back catalog of quality songs!

  • what i hate about idol is that they take a kid who is good at one genre of music and make them do other genres that they don't like. and when they don't get it right they get raked over the coals for it. rubbish indeed!

  • They should change the name of American Idol to American Ass Clowns, because that's who watches it.

  • Richard Marx is right! That Idol show is crap! the performers however are great...i think the producer and the directors and the Judges especially Simon morons!!!

  • this man writes songs for everybody!! such talent!

  • u have to remember, richard marx is a god in the music world, hes 100% right.

its business, they should let performers on there that have done their own stuff!!!

1 of the greatest songs ever written, was "right here waiting" by r.m.

  • I agree with him also about the show focusing on the really bad singers that come in for auditions, as we all know, that show is the one that kicks off Idol every year, the worst auditions, and I know from experience in my work place, people crowd in to our break area to watch these buffoons destroy a song! Idol is the modern days version of "Star Search" Anyone recall Sam Harrison, what a vocal range, where is he today? He did not promote himself, he relied on Motown instead, so, he faded!

  • I agree with him wholeheartedly, I just have to add that in his criticism there is a double edge, on one side there is the potential for these young aspiring performers to carve out a successful career for themselves, Richard said something in an interview with Larry king, he said it did not matter if others recorded his songs and made them hits, he still walks to the bank! He carved out a brief career for himself, I disagree, he is still a major draw in music, very professional !

  • I agree Richard you are so right, you hit it right on the head ABSOLUTELY why would anyone want their songs ruined by these stupid idol kids anyway?

  • im proud to say Ive never watched AI.

  • i love tis idol

  • Marx nailed this perfectly.

I'd rather pay to see Marx than watch AI for free!

  • agreed ..well said marx

  • He doesn't seem to age does he. What he says is 100% true.

  • Go Richard Marx! =P

Seriously people, don't take what he said the wrong way. There are some great singers on the show, but when you mix the art of singing with reality, he's right, how does this give them a chance to perfect their own artistry?

I'm all about writing songs and they never do this on American Idol which aggravates me. Let's just sing other peoples' songs.

  • can't agree more

  • Oh please people, it's just an entertainment show! They sing popular songs so the average Joe, who votes for the winner, can tell if they are singing the song right. If they were alll singing original material the audience wouldn't be able to sing along & know if it"s being sung right. So sit back, relax & enjoy the show and Paula's dancing as she listens to them!

  • I am so glad to hear Richard say this, I agree with him 100% and I don't think any of these guys have talent at all. It is more like Kareoke and audiance are more interested in how bad people are then how good they could be.

  • @orlandobabe Some of them are incredible interpreters, but have nothing new to give to the artistic world, just mimick what's already been done.

  • @MsGnorts If they are so good, how come they can't write their own music? And I have heard all previous winners but they don't sound so great to me and like Mr Marx said, people seem to wanna see the worst in people like William Hung, dear God it is a humilation to see him.

  • @orlandobabe I agree, but not all great singers ever wrote a tune, like Sinatra, like elvis whom Marx admires so much, I do too!

I agree, American idol is just crap-

  • @orlandobabe yeah i hate these talent shows like american idol....just go to a record label and show your voice

  • I agree....

  • Richard is a talented man and i agree with him. He looks younger now then he did back then lol. Hope richard marx brings back some 80's sounding tunes :)

  • Too right.American idol has turned an american talent show into the american freak show for cheap ratings. Richard has the guts to say it as it is despite. The best artists ever were discovered and NOT manufactured.

  • Amen! Thank God I don't watch it.

  • FINALLY somebody said it...Thank you Richard...Whatever happened to the days of working hard for your fame? Now all you have to do is just show up for an audition, make it, and boom your a star...so contrived...

  • I don't know where they went but they went and I don't know if they are around and hiding or just gone forever.

  • I think that they are gone forever...thank you for answering my comment! FINALLY somebody gets it! :)

  • Hell yeah! I mean some singers seem all right but the show is exactly like what Marx said it is kareoke and it is more like a humiliation contest plus we American veiwers seem to be interested in how bad people can be. Does that William Hung know how much dignity he has lost.

  • @lauraken Elvis got the cold shoulder at the Gran Ole Opry at the beginning, the KING!

  • quoted from IlluminatedSoal "yep, I kind of perked up in my seat there too when I heard her say that. Had to replay it because I didn't believe they'd get something like that wrong.

And I have to say, I completely agree with him. Why else would there be so many Idol Extra Specials on TV and put together on youtube, with the worst auditions? It's about the ratings and the money. Not about the talent. I'm glad he's this honest. Plus, he really is a talent who worked for his fame."

  • @balam921..u better listen N digest RM's words. He's not being sarcastic. He's jst being honest N brave enaf 2 say those words coz he has great respect for music and talents. He's not saying the contestant r nt talented, rather he said dat d show, airs more of d bad auditions, embarrasing once...N 4what?(ratings?) Its a talent show so dey shUd air mor of d gr8 auditions..n i feel bad 4 those hU were mbarased bcz of their faild auditions. I WANNA SEE MORE OF THE TALENTS AND NOT THE JOKES...

  • As a songwriter, singer, guitarist, bass player and recording engineer; I gotta say that Richard definitely was RIGHT on the money with his statements about American Idol.

The thing that always impresses me about Richard is that his PERSPECTIVE on the music business and music culture is always far superior to anyone else out there...yet it seems he is interviewed so rarely? This guy has been around the block and knows what he's talking about.

    Richard; you're a classy guy...I love you man :D

  • I agree with Richard, and that is why I don't watch American Idol.

  • Well, he may not like "American Idol", but I'm a fan of both! I watch "Idol" everytime it comes on & I have all 7 studio albums by Richard, plus my former band used to love to play "Angelia" in our bar/cafe days, & on top of that, my friend Andy can play acoustic versions of "Hazard", "Endless Summer Nights" & "Now & Forever" on his guitar. He played that last one to his wife at their wedding ceremony.

  • You know what? Richard Marx IS right. American Idol MOCKS the people who can't sing. That's discrmination!

I mean, I remember there was once this contest (by American Idol) of who the WORST singer was. Gosh.

  • He couldn't be more right.

  • I love Richard! He's funny live in concert! He's a great dude and he's got a great wife and family! Wholesome guy know's what he's talking about!

  • I dig this guy he has more respect for good music then to come on this show for clowns.Don't get me wrong there are some really good singers that come from the show but the show it's self suck.I would watch if they had the singers doing original music.

  • He hit the nail right on the head. You rock Richard!!!!!

  • I agree. And why can't more people open there eyes like Richard Marx? And why isn't he producing anyone? Can you please tell me?

    God Bless.

  • DOH! She misquoted the album title at the end!

  • William Hung can't even sing. Open your eyes, and stop being blind like the world wants you to. No disrespect intended.

    God Bless.

  • this is sarcasm ... idiots!...

  • True talent should not be judged by how good you are at impersonating someone else's songs, but by how good you are in your own right.

  • He's spot on.

  • god i love him sooo much and i agree with him!

  • If Marx was still a commercially viable artist, he wouldn't have been this honest about his feelings about AI imo. I applaud him for saying it in an interview, but it would've really meant something if a superstar called Idol out for what it is, a mockery of the music business.

  • Brian May does (Queen fame). He calls it something like "using kids for ratings."

  • Good to see that some superstars aren't afraid to call AI out for what it is. I just wish that more would do it, but a lot of them don't want to burn their bridges or are trying to get on AI.

  • RIchard Marx is in the same league with Queen, he is a great somgwriter. What Brian says is so true, AI is just a cheap music contest.

  • He is right...its all about ratings..anway...I dont bother about all these "idols/talents" shows..real talent needs to work very hard for years..

  • I agree with what he says. But the studio doesn't care, its about ratings and its what people want to see. Other people making a fool of themselves.

  • Richard is "right on" here. Who freakin cares? So you can sing real good? Good for you. So can I. But there's a whole lot of people that can sing really well, as it turns out. The real need in music today is fresh originality. There is little to none of that it seems. I enjoyed watching Idol for two or three seasons, but I haven't been able to turn it on since the season with Carrie Underwood for exactly the reasons that Richard mentions here. It's a sad reality of the direction in our culture.

  • Get it right woman........My own worst enemy.....how rude....

  • yep, I kind of perked up in my seat there too when I heard her say that.

Plus, he really is a talent who worked for his fame.
