When yaoming was a child, very few chinese people had pianos. His clothes are too nice for a 1970s chinese. This is during maozedong era when everyone was required to wear the same clothes. Plus his tongueflick at the end of the movie goes against chinese culture. This would have been taken during the later 1970's and most of china didnt have video at this quality back then, all TV in china until the 1990's was in black and white.

How could a personal household afford color? Chinese people only learn skills that are important towards gaining a job in a field. Yao's skill was obviously basketball. He would have had no time to play piano. Even if he did want to play piano, it would have made him a performer which would put him into the lowest class amongst chinese.
