It clearly states that we have become so entrenched in self that we have placed all others as mere incidentals in our lives to the point that they do not deserve the respect of our devoted attention. The fallacy of the belief that one should just live in the moment means that you place no stock in your future.
I like text because it's a second channel that I can multiplex at least on the input side. Moreover, since it costs something, I like it because if I don't except phone calls, it weeds out people who are too cheap or don't care enough to contact me on a channel I use. . . screens out scrubs.

What people don't grasp right away, especially if you're someone who doesn't own a cell phone for all sorts of reasons, or you're in the previous generation, is this: using your device when someone is there doesn't say "Sorry, you're not interesting enough." Why? Because we have an ability you don't: micro management. I check my mail in conversation because it only takes a second. I don't have to talk just to you, I can talk to others as well and not miss a beat. It's efficiency, not an insult.
i'm anti-cellphone, i'll never own one, EVER! and it's for all of the reasons there, and then some! seeing people text during a family get-together is one of the most annoying things i've ever seen... and it makes me just want to beat the shit out of people when i see them on the phone while driving... if i'm not at home, then i will not be reached, and i prefer it that way.... leave a fucking message!
HA there are others like ME!!! lol I too have yet to own a mobile...i don't get why people text so much...i mean ya it's good when your in class in being that your quiet but really...i wanted to chuck every phone near me against the wall during lecturers...
Well not owning a cellphone period, I think, is a bit over the top. I find it IS circumstancial, but am very grateful in those instances to have one. Think being stranded, informing people you might be late or early or whatnot. That said I am infinitely annoyed at how a lot of people are simply abusing texting and have become zombies. I find it incredibly insulting if they check their texts while in a conversation, or even answer a non-urgent call.
but you not obvious about it your mind might go wow he has something on his teeth is it lettuce or you might be chatting on your cell phone either way its not nice not to listen
The fundamental error of his request is to appeal to technology and advancement for something no manifestation of it can offer in terms of altering how we interact.
Don't plead for technology to make you more human. Work with humans to help humans be more human.
Let us make technology that won't distract people when they're driving. Let us make technology that lonely guys won't start fidgeting with when they don't have anyone to dance with on the dance floor.
I don't see how this is possible, that is, I don't know how one could do such a thing...but perhaps someone else does!
hmm... very interesting. Its funny because I probably did half of his points and to look back and think about it, he was 100% right about what I was actually thinking.
all i got from this is "cell phones distract you from your life" which i already know and am annoyed with. presentation fail. while it was kinda funny he didn't bring anything useful to the table other than an idea that he didn't have any answers for.
lol, I was thinking the same thing. But the guy who gave the presentation is probably watching this video on youtube too, so idk if I want to be that harsh.
OK this is something worth talking about for 18 min...why was this only 4 min...and some dude got to talk about useless crap like trailer building for like 15 min...i object
Perhaps if you followed the link to the TED website (the link beside each and every TED video) and clicked "about TED," you'd realize that TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.
Although I KNOW what it stands for, I do not really care. I love learning new things, but there is a but :) I could care less about Britney Spear's new baby, dress, haircut and etc.
See, some information is more valuable than other. While Britney's new dress is a new information for me, it is nowhere near as useful as knowing a tiny piece of new information about how our Universe works, or how our minds work, or something cool like that.
I remember a day when people had answering machines they could use when they were out of the house, and wouldn't take any calls until they got home and felt like dealing with it. I remember a day when people would turn their cell phones and pagers off in a movie theatre. I remember a day when at least you could tell whether someone was on the cell phone, instead of having to guess if they're crazy or have an earpiece.
Christ! Now I'm having another "damn kids, get off my lawn" moment.
This talk gives sms as a particular example, but obviously there are more. Indeed, perhaps the usage of the web may fall under the same category for some. Maybe it doesn't seem to effect people's social lives directly, but I would say it does. The web is a big time sink for many.
I find myself glued to the web. The info-overload is mind-numbing and yet intoxicating. But, there's also SO MUCH interaction with people on the web, beyond those around you. I'm conflicted on the matter.
I use it for learning, constantly. Continuously. It never seems to end. I wasted my entire weekend in fact. As beneficial as it has been, the issue is that of priorities. The web can be a killer for us people with ADD.
Hits it on the mark..not many are just "there"... being.... anymore...there's always a story being told about "it", meanwhile "the presence" is missed.
This reminds me of dumb people who buy a digital camera. They take pictures of everything, stuff they don't even wanna see again in a photo.
I also noticed that most people don't feel the sacrifice they're making when recording everything they've done on a video camera. You're basically watching it on a screen twice, and never with your eyes once. "Hey look at where i was this summer" Yeah well you were never really there in these moments you show me.
Yeah, I also dont get the way people use Mp3's.. I know we use it to pass time, but doesnt mean I have to be listening to songs ALL THE TIME. It just.. I dunno.
But lets put it this way, while they do all that, they're not alert to their surroundings. This means that there's more chance that they might get killed by something.
If only they died faster than they reproduced... we'd have peace on earth.
This is different. One takes photos of things because one wants to capture that beautiful moment. I go back to my good photos over and over again to see how cool the geometry came out or how interesting the composition was. It's admiring art, like a painting, over and over again.
If it's going out for the sake of photography, you can usually tell. So yeah it is different.
I was just talking about the fact that everyone can snap a shutter nowdays and not really even understand the art. They just like having pictures of stuff for the sake of having pictures of stuff. Same as a child would do with a camera. Except it's become a norm. So for most people, it's not an art. Which kills the picture in a way.
I mean, I'm not going to say that photography and dialog should be reserved for the ones who truly understand it, that's a little unnecessary.
But when someone does something without even knowing a thing about it and quite frankly not wanting to learn either, it just pisses me off XD, but that's my problem.
good message... in that we should strive to retain our humanity and develop it over that of technology, which should only be a tool we can put down making us less dependant and more independent.

ehsanul 2 years ago 2
an honest comment. i think it simply expands what it means to be a human.
people are social, is it surprising that we try to find ways to 'better' it?
it seems like it would be difficult to live 'off the grid', though it seems to have a democratizing effect. oh! what will become of our borders???
yamaha893 2 years ago
Well, I would say this depends on how you use the internet. Some people use it like watching TV, or gossiping in a school cafeteria.
Other people use it to learn as well.
So this internet, is precisely what it is, a net/web.
The search engine however, that's what makes the difference. It makes for finding common answers really easy.
