  • I've been a victim of the "love it, mean it" situation :P

  • i liked this and agree

  • Humanity is overrated. Anti-social all the way!

  • 1:55 - LMFAO Hahahahahahahahahah!

That sign is ***** I want it here in the UK too!

BTW: I totally agree with the comment made by UrEyesRWideShut

  • I find it interesting that in our attempt to "connect" we actually lose our connection to the outside world.

  • duh.

  • @ambygirl1008 and to each other really.

  • It clearly states that we have become so entrenched in self that we have placed all others as mere incidentals in our lives to the point that they do not deserve the respect of our devoted attention. The fallacy of the belief that one should just live in the moment means that you place no stock in your future.

  • I like text because it's a second channel that I can multiplex at least on the input side. Moreover, since it costs something, I like it because if I don't except phone calls, it weeds out people who are too cheap or don't care enough to contact me on a channel I use. . . screens out scrubs.

  • second channel, multiplex, input side, moreover, screens out - its a text message. its neat-o and all that, but take it easy. its a text message.

  • content is king

  • Renny is hot.

  • "Cogito, ergo sum" René Descartes

"I share, therefore I am" Renny Gleeson

    "I link, therefore I am" habit47

  • were the hell are we going to!...to hell I guess...

  • very interesting! good talk

  • i'm anti-cellphone, i'll never own one, EVER! and it's for all of the reasons there, and then some! seeing people text during a family get-together is one of the most annoying things i've ever seen... and it makes me just want to beat the shit out of people when i see them on the phone while driving... if i'm not at home, then i will not be reached, and i prefer it that way.... leave a fucking message!

  • HA there are others like ME!!! lol I too have yet to own a mobile...i don't get why people text so much...i mean ya it's good when your in class in being that your quiet but really...i wanted to chuck every phone near me against the wall during lecturers...

  • Well not owning a cellphone period, I think, is a bit over the top. I find it IS circumstancial, but am very grateful in those instances to have one. Think being stranded, informing people you might be late or early or whatnot. That said I am infinitely annoyed at how a lot of people are simply abusing texting and have become zombies. I find it incredibly insulting if they check their texts while in a conversation, or even answer a non-urgent call.

  • Less human is better imo.

  • I would have liked to hear a full 18 minute speech on this. I think he has a good point, and it's a shame he didn't go into more detail.

  • its not cellphones fault that people ignore you

its just shows the true nature of people

if you dont want to listen to someone you dont

but you not obvious about it your mind might go wow he has something on his teeth is it lettuce or you might be chatting on your cell phone either way its not nice not to listen

you decide to not the tech

  • He wants to create the New World Order! Ack!

  • people are so fucking alienated in this culture.

  • The fundamental error of his request is to appeal to technology and advancement for something no manifestation of it can offer in terms of altering how we interact.

Don't plead for technology to make you more human. Work with humans to help humans be more human.

  • good talk.

  • boooo texting is my life

  • i want his shoes

  • He's asking:

Let us make technology that won't distract people when they're driving. Let us make technology that lonely guys won't start fidgeting with when they don't have anyone to dance with on the dance floor.

I don't see how this is possible, that is, I don't know how one could do such a thing...but perhaps someone else does!

  • What a load of shit! Maybe where you come from, mate!

  • Wow, just found this which makes this point ever so more pointed: fmylife(dot)com/love/932548

  • hmm... very interesting. Its funny because I probably did half of his points and to look back and think about it, he was 100% right about what I was actually thinking.

    5/5 awesome.

  • all i got from this is "cell phones distract you from your life" which i already know and am annoyed with. presentation fail. while it was kinda funny he didn't bring anything useful to the table other than an idea that he didn't have any answers for.

  • My mom didn't have a cellular phone until she was 51

  • considering cell phones are rather new thats not suprising

  • Do we need technologies to make us more human, or weren't we pretty human to start with?

  • "More human" is a meaningless statement.

    This was a poor presentation.

  • lol, I was thinking the same thing. But the guy who gave the presentation is probably watching this video on youtube too, so idk if I want to be that harsh.

  • more people, more shoulders to stand on, more distractions, more mental and less physical, more impertinent mental

  • I LOVE this, so true! Hola!

  • He probably had a refined point, but he wasn't given enough time to elaborate, so in the end he just chose to show some funny pictures.

  • OK this is something worth talking about for 18 min...why was this only 4 min...and some dude got to talk about useless crap like trailer building for like 15 min...i object

  • you probably don't even know what TED stands for

  • The Education Department?

    Texas Education Development?

    The Empire of Dicks?

    Tiny Embryo Deaths?

    I give up.

  • Perhaps if you followed the link to the TED website (the link beside each and every TED video) and clicked "about TED," you'd realize that TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.

  • Yeah but I knew you wud tell me and I didn't really care.

  • Technology, Entertainment, Design

  • ArxVirtus beat you to it 6 hours ago.

  • Although I KNOW what it stands for, I do not really care. I love learning new things, but there is a but :) I could care less about Britney Spear's new baby, dress, haircut and etc.

See, some information is more valuable than other. While Britney's new dress is a new information for me, it is nowhere near as useful as knowing a tiny piece of new information about how our Universe works, or how our minds work, or something cool like that.

  • I remember a day when people had answering machines they could use when they were out of the house, and wouldn't take any calls until they got home and felt like dealing with it. I remember a day when people would turn their cell phones and pagers off in a movie theatre. I remember a day when at least you could tell whether someone was on the cell phone, instead of having to guess if they're crazy or have an earpiece.

Christ! Now I'm having another "damn kids, get off my lawn" moment.

  • aww why'd he only get like 3 mins usually ppl get 18 mins

  • I never let anybody or anything force me to be available.

  • This talk gives sms as a particular example, but obviously there are more. Indeed, perhaps the usage of the web may fall under the same category for some. Maybe it doesn't seem to effect people's social lives directly, but I would say it does. The web is a big time sink for many.

I find myself glued to the web. The info-overload is mind-numbing and yet intoxicating. But, there's also SO MUCH interaction with people on the web, beyond those around you. I'm conflicted on the matter.

  • So does the web make us more or less human?

  • an honest comment. i think it simply expands what it means to be a human.

people are social, is it surprising that we try to find ways to 'better' it?

it seems like it would be difficult to live 'off the grid', though it seems to have a democratizing effect. oh! what will become of our borders???

  • Well, I would say this depends on how you use the internet. Some people use it like watching TV, or gossiping in a school cafeteria.

Other people use it to learn as well.

So this internet, is precisely what it is, a net/web.

The search engine however, that's what makes the difference. It makes for finding common answers really easy.

  • I use it for learning, constantly. Continuously. It never seems to end. I wasted my entire weekend in fact. As beneficial as it has been, the issue is that of priorities. The web can be a killer for us people with ADD.

  • Agreed. I'm kind of like that myself. It's too damn interesting. It's like the discovery channel on steroids.

  • Hits it on the mark..not many are just "there"... being.... anymore...there's always a story being told about "it", meanwhile "the presence" is missed.

  • i have pay as you go phone so i cant afford txting :(

  • This reminds me of dumb people who buy a digital camera. They take pictures of everything, stuff they don't even wanna see again in a photo.

I also noticed that most people don't feel the sacrifice they're making when recording everything they've done on a video camera. You're basically watching it on a screen twice, and never with your eyes once. "Hey look at where i was this summer" Yeah well you were never really there in these moments you show me.

  • Yeah, I also dont get the way people use Mp3's.. I know we use it to pass time, but doesnt mean I have to be listening to songs ALL THE TIME. It just.. I dunno.

  • Yeah, the shit never ends.

But lets put it this way, while they do all that, they're not alert to their surroundings. This means that there's more chance that they might get killed by something.

If only they died faster than they reproduced... we'd have peace on earth.

  • This is different. One takes photos of things because one wants to capture that beautiful moment. I go back to my good photos over and over again to see how cool the geometry came out or how interesting the composition was. It's admiring art, like a painting, over and over again.

  • If it's going out for the sake of photography, you can usually tell. So yeah it is different.

I was just talking about the fact that everyone can snap a shutter nowdays and not really even understand the art. They just like having pictures of stuff for the sake of having pictures of stuff. Same as a child would do with a camera. Except it's become a norm. So for most people, it's not an art. Which kills the picture in a way.

  • I agree. It's sort of like how anyone can post a video, or comment on a video without understanding the art of the dialogue.

  • I mean, I'm not going to say that photography and dialog should be reserved for the ones who truly understand it, that's a little unnecessary.

But when someone does something without even knowing a thing about it and quite frankly not wanting to learn either, it just pisses me off XD, but that's my problem.

  • good message... in that we should strive to retain our humanity and develop it over that of technology, which should only be a tool we can put down making us less dependant and more independent.

  • fones r dum

  • lol u spel good

  • Idiot!

  • um, what's was the point of this? less SMSing?

is he serious, SMSing is like talking to someone right TO the point... saves a lot of time for most ppl... compare 2 conversations, one face to face where usually one of the 2 has better things to do than listening to the other's life story ( happens a lot..) vs texting, where the topic most of the time is TO THE point, asking about specific things and getting specific answers---> less time wasted for both!!!

  • I'm a huge technology geek, but I'm proud to say I still use the cellphone I bought 8 years ago and therefore rarely use it.

  • dude i though about that when i was high

  • This video seemed like an intellectual rant, only intellectual because the concept of "shared narratives" was used. This was a bit out of place when compared to other TED videos- less substantive.

  • Aren't these videos more just about... considering interesting thoughts and forming an either your own or a more educated opinion about the subject?

    Why all the biggotry?

  • Biggotry? seriously? You might google the definition of that word-

  • apparently he spelt it wrong

  • Wait, what was he talking about again? I was too busy twittering to notice.

  • I'm 23 and I am proud to say I've never sent a text message in my entire life.

  • join the club :)

  • That's fine, but that's not exactly what the video is trying to communicate.

  • Proud? So no text messaging but commenting on youtube videos is not a problem for you?

You're like the 19th Century man who is proud never to have used a biro. Come join us in trivial time saving devices, you can be different and interesting in more meaningful ways I am sure!

  • No offense, but why are you proud of that? Text messaging is mobile instant chat, what is wrong with that? Instant delivering of a short , and (sometime) important message

That is like saying "I've never use, or own a cell phone." Sure it isn't necessary (because you can live without a cell phone), but it still can be extremely useful

Text messaging isn't alcohol or drug, it is another step in the advancing technology. Why are you so proud to not have experienced a part of the changing world?

  • I'm proud not to text because it is getting a bit obsessive for some and I don't want to be like that. Many people I know are constantly texting or distracted waiting to recieve one. It's an inefficient means of communication. I think many people do it because they get a tiny thrill ...' ooh I got a new text message'.

I know this isn't how everyone uses texting but it's what I've seen.

  • lol, I loved the "Please Hang Up Your F****** Phone and Drive" sign, I may have to get me one of those...

  • any ideas on how to do that?

  • I want to know too.

  • cool..

  • :) cool

  • so true, that's why I don't even own a cell phone or any type of mobile device

  • BRAVO!- The only problem is no one is listening, their all on their cellphones texting about how they just heard this great talk-

  • In other words: Fuck Twitter? :P

  • Great speech

  • I've never been first to someone this big.

  • congrats lol :)
