driving in snow really isnt that hard. and yea everyone will biff it once in a while its impossible to know exactly how slick it is. but learning how to recover from slides etc does more than anything. like... if there is a pile up 100 yards ahead.... dont lock ur brakes... i would actually step on the gas a little and pull the e brake and basically drift out of the way... driving to school and back for 2.5 years in high school in NE wisconsin ive seen some stupid shit. but u can avoid it.

The municipality doesn't pay for people's car accidents. It pays for the material used to prevent them, which they buy in bulk upfront. Naturally they look for the cheapest option that works. Sand is cheaper this way, it creates traction, it's not as corrosive as salt, AND it's reusable.

@dphendrick leave it to america to chose not to properly maintain a road then hand out tickets to near unavoidable accidents do to the lack of intelligence of the local government. they should have not driven on a slope in icy weather as you will gain speed no matter what you do with the brakes. all be it the guy dragging his passenger door on the snow sure gave it all he had.

@geordo2001 , that's the biggest fallacy regarding trying to stop on icy roads. Never pump your brakes, apply even pressure and do not lock them up, put your transmission in neutral and take away power from your drive wheels. This will get you stopped much faster and safer than pumping your brakes. Also, drive to arrive.. slow down for conditions, be prepared for the worst.
