RIP
@fireandrain1 i guess. i listened to it first when i was 14. for a long time i thought it was a love song.. and i liked it a lot. during college i came to know abount van gough.. and that made this more special.. i went through a lot of phases.. from floyd to knopfler to heavy metal.. but even now i am not burnt out on this one..
What I think is incredible - is to write a song like this, would need a lot of introspection, which usually comes from an older person. Don, I think, was not even 21 when he wrote this. It stands as a monument to the creativity of the younger mind. Albert Einstein was only 25 years old when he wrote 'Special Relativity'
"They would not listen. They're not listening still. Perhaps they never will."
This is the story of van Gogh: unrecognised as an artist until after his death.
"And when no hope was left in sight on that STARRY STARRY NIGHT. You took your life as lovers often do. But I could have told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."
@killer759 Yah that was my mistake killer759. I copied it from a Tupac Shakur Bio. Apologies. Please dont kill me 759 times;) Ill remove it...peace!! And thank you..

I LOVE this song but i am english and an english comedian called Freddie Star did this song and if you see it you will never ever get it out of your mind iwill post a link but beware you have been warned
@TheRealMichaelWayson haha and the fact he had shed loads of awesome paintingsXD but your right this song is awesome and alot of people will remember it for a gd while. thumbs up comment :D
It was more than guitar and voice. It was poetry. Perhaps the entire song is a trinity towards giving Vincent Van Gogh the rightful praise he deserves.
The more I listen to his music (old and new), the more I realize how much of a genius he is. He writes about pretty much anything and could make everything sound so good. God, I love this man so much! ;)
This is one of the great American songs....Don McLean may have had only a couple of well known songs, but they were awesome. This song is so soulful and lyrically beautiful.
I agree this song is a classic and is timeless. Odd though, how someone could write songs like this, American Pie, Castles in the Air and one or two others, but then that's it. He was only allowed certain amount of legend making. I understand he is extremely happy about his good luck (and the money that went with it) but you know he has to be sick as a dog of singing these same 5 or 6 songs over and over for 40 years.
@Bombeni Truly, Don McLean is genius material. 5 or 6 of his classics in 40 years is better than 10 or 11 thrash songs by thrash artists that become 'hits' every year - as it is happening these days !
Genius, beautifully articulated. Would have to be one of my all time favourites - that and Castles in the Air. My mother had some great taste whilst I was growing up - which as you know some how becomes apart of yourself as you grow older.
I studiied Vincent at one time. Traveled in his footsteps in France. Loved the Musee D'Orsey in Paris. I stood in front of this picture for a long time. You have to see his work in person because no print comes close. The depth of color is amazing. Vincent was imbalanced but he was also very spoiled by his brother, who supported him almost all his life on the pay of a gallery attendent in Paris. Lovely song.
My Dad grew up listening to Motown hits, then he bought a bar in a country music area. I remember the few 8 tracks that he owned . This was on one of them.... a far cry from the country music he was forced to listen to, to keep the customers happy.
This is my kind of music, just a fantastic songwriter singing a fantastic song. No big flashy light shows or backup dancers, just pure talent and emotion on display. Simon and Garfunkel do it the same way. You really do have to wonder if we'll ever see performers of their calibre again, because all the crap that keeps getting pumped out these days makes me very doubtful.
OMG. I so love this song since it was first released in the 1970s by this awesome singer / poet. Vincent Van Gogh is THE artist I ever loved and still do. His life and his paintings just pulls me in and will not let me go. Beariful, sad, awesome and haunting.
@gibbdreamer You are so right! I hope you visited the recent exhibition at the royal academy it was breathtaking!!!!! I reflect on Vincents art most days.with the same feelings as you. Oh the song is great as well, but i think Vincent would have hated it.
I'm remembering his guitar...I had a Martin D-28S back then too [not that I deserved it] The song and guitar are classics...and I wish I had kept it!!!!
This song is about the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh, who was deeply depressed most of his life. He committed suicide at age 31. Such a nicely done song about an ugly event. Don McLean is a real talent ! ! !
