  • @DataSchlepper Totally. When I heard him say that he was in Sunday school, I was like "WTF?"

  • Harlan Ellison is a writer who grabs you by the guts and dosen't let go, wether funny, moved to tears and most importantly he makes you think.

  • This is so fucking pretencous yo.

  • I've be reading Harlan Ellison since the early 1970"s, he never fails to make me laugh, cry, rail about politiics and mostly THINK. Padadin of the Lost Hour is a more recent (1990's) fabulous piece for the new reader and of course the classis Repent,Harlequin Said the Tick-Tock Man.

  • The story he's talking about, about the man who makes the maps is called "Incognita Inc." It was featured in an in-flight magazine a ways back. I don't know if he's had it republished somewhere else since.

  • Speaking of books, wtf’s wrong w/ OLD BOOKS? They’ve got letters that look like an italicized F. It’s actually an S. Yes. I’m aware of the thorn and eth rune of Old English or Aenglisc. There’s more documentation for that than there is for medieval letters like that. Unreadable. Even for a true Anglophone (like me). I never gotten wind of it. I bet Harlan can answer since he's the most well-letter'd fella this side of Hawthorne.

  • Harlan is a genius. A hard working genius. And the world is better because of his work.

  • One of America's best writers of the late 20th Century - period. Harlan Ellison's reputation will only grow higher and higher as the years pass by...

  • It's been a few years since I first watched this interview as a teen

This guy, who is American (i'm British) changed my life, my view on life and inspired me in a much more profound way than anyone has, a teenager in about the space of 30 minutes, can you believe that? I don't want to turn this into a soap opera but he really made me look at the world a lot differently, his wisdom definitely shone though.

  • does anyone know the name of the story that harlan is talking about of the guy who makes the maps?

    thanks

  • Grabbed these on Netflix and loved every minute of it. In a creative writing group at the local "way cool" community college... Harlan Ellison and Larry Cohen are super for giving ideas and inspiration on the craft while "dealing" with the speedbumpers in our paths.

  • What is more indicative of contemporary America: The slack-jawed yokels who show up every day on Judge Judy, or the fact that millions of people sit down in front of their TVs every day to WATCH said yokels?

  • Harlan Ellison... now THAT'S a real American, an intelligent and boisterous individual and I am happy to be like my idol.

  • im 35 ..my english spelling suxs but listen what im trying to say : HARLLAN ELLISON is a GREAT reason for americans to be proud of . A genius.. a LIVING legend who lived with isaac asimov ray bradbury..among otheres a surviver in this days, and as i read here: THIS MAN is an AMERICAN TREASURE. Cheers for him!

  • I thought Garth Marenghi was based on Shaun Hutson, or James Herbert? Oh well, probably just an amalgam of horror writers popular in the 1980s...

  • Sadly, he is true. This nation is full of fools.

Interesting that he mentions Judge Judy, I like The People's Court because you can see the idiocy amongst the averge American populace. Pure unadulterated stupidity.

    Harlan is fucking right!

  • Harlan rocks!

  • They Get SHOT SON!!!

  • It is nice to see Harlan excited and vibrant and happy about his art. That is why people create things!

  • Harlan saves this. The narrator and the framing device is driving me up the wall.

  • Harlan's always been one of my favorite interviews. Although too hype and gullible-looking for me to relate to, he's always been interesting.

You can see the interviewer resents Harlan for God knows what reason. What a dour, lifeless jerk.

  • this guy is a terrible narrator.

  • @arsepoetica71 holy crap yes.

  • my dad's name is Stanly waiter......

  • How about a review of Silent Running?

  • A wonderful example of HUMANITY.

  • Says the idiot who favorited 'dramatic gopher'.

    You've already discredited yourself.

  • Now I know what Garth Merenghi's Darkplace is based on.

  • That's exactly what I thought too! I was almost expecting him to end his self introduction with, "plus actor."

  • @RobotBacon Very Merenghi indeed.

  • @RobotBacon Actually man, if you watch the Clive Barker interview on the right, you'll see who Garth is based on! Remember when GM goes 'I'm Garth Marenghi. Author. Visionary. Dreamweaver. Plus actor'? I burst out laughing when Clive tells the interviewer what he sees himself as!

  • @RitualNo1 I just meant this show in general, because I love Ellison, but you're totally right about Barker!

  • @RobotBacDamn you're righton

  • This man is a national fucking treasure.

  • I find this man Harlan very very interesting to listen to, I admire his energy....he's so fluent in what he says....that's great....

  • and I spammed you newt because your words have no business on this thread.

  • Only gorgo3 has the right to decide that, sisy.

I've read lots of Ellison and Gore Vidal, but I must say, regardless of art, I loathe their politics. Vidal's opinion on literature is as perfectly spot on as his political ideas are myopic.

By projecting his hatred of "the masses" on Republicans like me, Ellison may continue to think of himself as a liberal while acting as a man who thinks gifted men and women do indeed deserve the greater rewards. Vidal is a often bit more honest about this.

  • I'm amazed that DD has only SEVEN (???!!!) subscribers! There hasn't been a quality interview/documentary/talkshow program devoted to the speculative in... what? since the scifi channel still had decent programming (and not those abhorrent b-movies they film in canada or bulgaria that star people that haven't worked big sets since the 90s)?

... but I digress: Mister Wiater, you are a blessing in a bleak, mad-max world of rampantly destitute programming (that goes for YT as well). Excellent work.

  • Damn...

That's just too ignorant a viewpoint for me to consider arguing against. You should get a Mac; their Safari web-browser is amazing--- it has an awesome feature that'll really help you out--- SPELLCHECK!!!

  • my viewpoint is sooooo ignorant...you cant respond...but you do anyway.

    mmmmmmm........i guess your sybil

  • -Respond- and -argue-

    retain unique, individual meanings.

I said nothing about 'not responding'...

I won't argue your points because they are too flimsy to be held up by fact. Another reason why I won't "argue---once again differing from the benign "respond"--- is because you're too infinitely stupid (and @ 45, you should be executed to aid in ridding defunct dna/rna from the human genome.

  • wow...your linguistic acumen is so profound...as far as 45..you sohuld get your facts straight...unless you're stalking me, In which care you should get a life.

And only a liberal elitist can masquerade the idea of character assassination with beneign response...if there is such an animal.

    You need a life

  • Spellcheck doesn't make you a good speller.

  • newt, RUN RUN RUN! to Rush Limbaugh's shanty for an oxycontin-fueled hate-slam of all things PROGRESSIVE (interesting if news media replaced 'Liberal' w/that term) in this continent. He knows he's (rush) right because he's ripped to the tits before he shits over the airwaves w/his tongue. Newt, go back to the colony and wait for ripley to save your mute ass...
