@ZZsteven Wrong, that land wasn't stolen, it was a gift from the king of France. And it was one century before the invasion of Britain.. By then all the normand considered themselves Franks (i.e. French), as the Bayeux Tapestry cell them
@yaitskov1 Charlemange his ancestors where franks and before his conquests he was know as the king of the franks (who lived in France not germany), he later ruled over great parts of europe where under an great part of the holy german empire
@yaitskov1 he is the son of King Pepin and Bertrada of Laon, a Frankish queen, he was born at liege -> frankish region at his time + he expanded the frankish kingdom not the holy roman
ps: the HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE DIDNT EXCIST it begon 962
@turner2123 But you could not speak of "the french" at that time because at that time the franks were a german tribe so modern days french people and germans have a part of the same ancestors. And the Eastern Part (German Part) of the Franks Empire was ruled by an ancestor of charlemange but after his line died out the local lords had chosen one of them. But both, france, germany and the fallen middle kingdom could claim the title of emperor :D
@turner2123 Britain ruling a third of the world and dominating the seas for over a century apparently isn't better than Napoleon's "empire"? Oh please
@TalonMercenary France have ruled great parts of africa, controled great american parts, had colonys everywhere (India, China, South Vietnam,...) and with nearly hole europe yes napoleons empire was way bigger (but mainly stronger) then the british empire
ps: you forget France had also many colonys it was for an very long time the 2nd biggest empire
@turner2123 Key word there: SECOND biggest empire. Napoleon was constantly at war because his empire was fragile. During the 1800s no one dared tangle with Britain as they had total domianace of the seas and a huge empire, biggest the world has ever seen. You hear of the Pax Britannica, but never the Pax Francois - it didnt exist
@TalonMercenary doesnt mean the british where stronger they only had an colonist spirit (france 2) but they where obligate to gave much money on the army to defend the french borders against: Spain, Germany, Austria, netherlands, ... Great brittain because its an island never suffered of these problems and could consentrat on its expansion around the world.
ps: the french army > the british army, but because the british navy > french navy the french succeded only once to invade brittain.

Off course Napoleon would have said he was French. It would be pretty stupid for a leader to appeal to the nationalism of the people and call for revolution and conquest, go all "vive la france" and then add :"oh yeah, by the way guys, i'm not French actually".
Actually things were a little more complicated than that.
During the revolution, Napoleon got so excited by the reformation of France he tried to create a pro-France revolutionary party in Corsica. Turns out, he was forced into exile by the Corsican establishment (all of his family had to leave).
From that point he decide to turn his back on Corsica. At this point France was all he had left.
So when he say "I'm French", it's not a political statement; he really believes it.
I do, i am a scientist. This is the logic, you have to accept the premise that it is possible Napoleon was smarter than you and the people he tried to influence with his nationalism. He died 200 years ago, the ratio, the logic would be no one would know his real intentions, unless you can travel back in time and read his mind. And you would have to prove you can read minds and travel back in time too. That, my friend is reason and logic.
Yes, you get it. Hitler wasn't a German either. But the German people were suffering from the treaty of Versailles and felt humiliated, even though they felt they hadn't really lost World War I. Like Napoleon, Hitler saw an easy pray in the Germans to sell nationalism too. IMO, that is
What question are you referring too? The one about Hitler? Maybe he did truly believe he was a German super-dude, i don't know. But it was convenient, and he would have been dumb to claim otherwise in the light of his campaign.
You know what would be pretty dumb? Getting involve in the politics of a country you don't even care about.
Ambition is an important factor but it doesn't explain everything; for instance It doesn't explain rushing towards enemy line on the forefront holding the French flag while they are firing straight at you (Battle of Arcole 1796).
Suppose you want power but France is doing alright. Next to you is Wallonia, the French part of Belgian. They speak the same language as you, better yet they used to be the same country. And they aren't doing well. There is anger and frustration there (fictional). If you're a megalomaniac, like Hitler and Napoleon, and you want to make yourself big, you're not going to try and bother with France, you use the Walloons. Get what i'm saying?
Hitler and now Belgium? Now you've just lost me!!!
Dude, it's pretty difficult to stay focus with you.
I don't see what Napoleon has to do with Wallonia but anyway you got my point; No one risks his life on the battlefield without a minimum of patriotic feeling.
Exactly, take walloon scenario. If you had won a battle and people came up to you and you know you're making history, you're not going to say "go congratulate my men over there, they did all the work, i was sitting under an umbrella on that hill right there." You're going to say "Yea, i was pretty awesome, i charged into those lines myself, took at least a hundred man down". Especially if you're a megalomaniac like Napoleon.
Just for the record, Napoleon was famous for risking his life on the battlefields in the Italian wars.
Even after becoming Emperor, he wouldn't move from his position while under enemy fire (there's a famous anecdote reported by many historians during the Russian campaign; a cannonball landed next to him but he wouldn't blink).
Plenty of leaders have rushed towards the enemy, i don't know wether or not they were good guessers, just the lucky ones we know of that survived or truly stupid to put their life on the line for a country. But it's striking how they all were or at least claimed to be nationalistic. Ceasar, Leonidas, Agamemnon, Caesar, Scippio, De Koningk and Jan Breydel, Wellington, etc etc
I'd like to rephrase my previous comment. Of many leaders it HAS BEEN SAID they rushed toward the enemy. Few history reports of battles are accurate. The winners blow their own efforts out of proportion. Remember how Caesar claimed the Belgians were the bravest of all Gauls. He probably said that because they were one of the only tribes he lost 2 legions too, so it was more of an excuse on his behalf than a compliment for the Belgians.
The french got their asses kicked by the English during the hundred years war. They also got their asses kicked by the Spanish during the Italian Wars. The Germans also abused them during WWI and WWII. Their only time of glory.........Nepoleon's brief time in power and he wasn't even French.
@themailman43, The hundred years war ended in a bloodbath for the English after the battle of Castillon. The French won most of the Italian wars, and left Italy after a grand "adventure" of loot, glory, and plunder, even the famous painting of the Mona Lisa was given to the French king. France was seen as a clear victor of WW I and WW II. Napoleon kicked the crap out of Europe for 25 years, plus it doesn't matter if he's French or not. Nationality doesn't affect military capability.
@themailman43, France defeated the Spanish in the War of Devolution, War of Reunion, making France the most powerful nation for two centuries from 1648-1870. Their prestige lasted longer than Spain's. France was the main fighting force in the Western Front during WW I, and repelled all German offensives, at Somme, Verdun, First and Second battles of the Marne.
@expertstrategy You clearly are forgetting about the british empire which was the first undisputed superpower for exactly those centuries you mentioned.
France prestige only surpassed the british in the napoleon empire whose time was too short to be considered as a hegemonic cycle.
@EricoMartinsT, true Britain's empire was the first super power of its' time, and that is very amazing from a country three times smaller than Italy. Bravo to the British. You know France had its' own long glorious hegemony back in the day of Louis XIV to Louis XV, France was the most powerful country of its' age at that time from 1648-1763, until Britain took the role as the most powerful in the world after the Seven Years War. Every country has its' own hegemony, like Germany in WW II.
@themailman43, The French were not always losers, in fact, most of the time, they are a frequent winner. If they are always losers, then France wouldn't exist. I suggest you watch these videos "French Military Victories part 1 and 2" It lists all of the wars they engaged in and won. and "French warriors part 1 and 2" these people made France a powerful country. as Charles De Gaulle once quoted, "France was built with a sword."
Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.
French Revolution - Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
The Napoleonic Wars - Lost. Temporary victories due to leadership of a Corsican (First Rule!), who ended up being no match for the Russian winter, Prussian grenadiers
Did you know that in spite of the fact that France always seems to loose, It is the european country who took parts in the most wars, and won about 80% of them?
@PipoMcGavin No. It isn't. That probably be Russia, with all their wars to unify Russia. Or else it be Germany. France lost: Gallic, Italian,Thirty Years War, The Napoleonic + Franco-Prussian war War of Spanish Succession WW II Indochina, panama, mexican war Algerian Rebellion Viking Invasions These wars are only 20% of french wars? Well, no. The French won a few wars, but not as many as you claim
hem, sorry but you claim that it isnt and that it's "probably russia" ? I think there is a lot of wars in which France took part and WON that you are not aware of.
- Saxon wars (772 804) Charlemagne conquering east saxons
- Conquest of Lombardy by Charlemagne (774- Val de Saire (1001)
- Hastings and conquest of England (1066)
- First crusade (1095 1099). Establishment of crusader states
all right, get these two out of the count if you wish, but that still makes a lot of french victories juste in the middle ages and early rennaissance, isn't it?
hahahah you noticed I started from Charlemagne ? These are FRENCH victories don't play on words. The italian wars were not won by Franks. even if you take the few wars here won by Franks there are still plenty of them won by France. France took part in some of the most pathetic defeats, I know, but they also won brilliant victory, and more important , the great majority of the conflicts in which they took part.
And I'm not french , just fighting for historical accuracy ;)
@PipoMcGavin Charlemagne was a Frank and so was his kingdom. France and Germany both grew out of his kingdom.
I agree that France is on of the most succesful European country when it comes to wars but they clearly lost in WW2... they were only lucky that Germany was torn apart by the rest of the world. ^^
@phanthrax. France didnt lose the 30 years war. The outcome stated very clearly, that France emerged as a clear winner in the end. They even gained some territory on the eastern border of the Holy Roman Empire.
During the War of the Spanish Succession, France won that war too, they placed a Bourbon on the Spanish Throne.
In the 9th century, Charles the Fat defeated the vikings at Paris. But he was a weak king. England was conquered by the vikings.
Winterwold, Prussia was initially defeated by the French before Waterloo, and Napolean was well underway in defeating the English under Wellington before the Prussians came back and hit him from behind and in the flanks. The Prussians could never have stood against the French in a 1 vs 1 pitched battle.
Who beat who? You mean Prussia beat France? Thats likely, virtaully every nation in Europe had beaten abd loat against every other nation at some point or another
Also, Napolean is infact French. He is of French bloob, also
@TheDutchBarbarian, oh, which Napoleon do you refer to, Napoleon I, Napoleon II, or Napoleon III? I'd say that they quite a few wars, including the Crimean War, Second Italian War of Independence, Greek War of Independence, dozens of Colonial Wars all over the world, and the Ifni War, WW I, WW II, successful participation in the Korean War, Suez Canal War, Persian Gulf War, etc...Do I have to go on?
@TheDutchBarbarian, my point is France won a decent number of wars two-hundred years after Napoleon I. it is ignorant to say they never won a war after Napoleon I.
@ Winterwolf00: You are a fool and an imbicile. I assume that you are most likely an American, like me, which unfortunately has made you pig headed. Our precious Revolution most likely would have failed without French assistance, and while we were still floudering about trying to establish ourselves as a legitimate power, Napolean was crushing Europe underfoot. France has thousands of years of history. We have two hundred. Get over youself.
Its called a joke, and don't preach to me about our Revolution I'm well aware that the French forces were invaluable to our success. Doesn't mean I can't still poke fun at them.
Oh and Napoleon was not French so that's not something the French can boast about. Theres also the fact he was defeated by Prussian forces. GO PRUSSIA!
Alright, yes he was demolished by Prussians, AFTER he subdued them. It wasn't until the post-Russia era that Napoleon lost to the Prussians, who originally were defeated by him because they had a rather outdated army. And yes, he was French. Corsica was his birthplace, and although that island was originally Genoan territory. He spent his life as a Frenchmen, he considered himslef French, he spoke French and he WAS French.
But regardless, this is a silly argument. I love the USA more than you think, but I have a peev against morons who insult other countries with no backing. However, judging by your intelligent response, you're smarter than I thought. My apologies.
Apology accepted :) However i still think napolean made huge errors at waterloo. Mainly he continued to use his column formation against the british line formation.

@hashimirasama
Let me put it this way, do you think Hitler believe he was actually an part of a better, superior Aryan race? And do you think he actually was?
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
I think he believed he was superior the same way I believe he believed in a lot of stupid things!
BTW, Hitler was in fact Austrian; do you think his German patriotism was fake too?
hashimirasama 1 year ago
@hashimirasama
Yes, you get it. Hitler wasn't a German either. But the German people were suffering from the treaty of Versailles and felt humiliated, even though they felt they hadn't really lost World War I. Like Napoleon, Hitler saw an easy pray in the Germans to sell nationalism too. IMO, that is
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
You're right, political opportunities explains, for the most part, the quick rise of those figures.
And yet, you didn't answer the question!
hashimirasama 1 year ago
@hashimirasama
What question are you referring too? The one about Hitler? Maybe he did truly believe he was a German super-dude, i don't know. But it was convenient, and he would have been dumb to claim otherwise in the light of his campaign.
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
You know what would be pretty dumb? Getting involve in the politics of a country you don't even care about.
Ambition is an important factor but it doesn't explain everything; for instance It doesn't explain rushing towards enemy line on the forefront holding the French flag while they are firing straight at you (Battle of Arcole 1796).
hashimirasama 1 year ago
Suppose you want power but France is doing alright. Next to you is Wallonia, the French part of Belgian. They speak the same language as you, better yet they used to be the same country. And they aren't doing well. There is anger and frustration there (fictional). If you're a megalomaniac, like Hitler and Napoleon, and you want to make yourself big, you're not going to try and bother with France, you use the Walloons. Get what i'm saying?
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
Hitler and now Belgium? Now you've just lost me!!!
Dude, it's pretty difficult to stay focus with you.
I don't see what Napoleon has to do with Wallonia but anyway you got my point; No one risks his life on the battlefield without a minimum of patriotic feeling.
hashimirasama 1 year ago
@hashimirasama
Sorry :) i'm just trying to give examples.
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
Just for the record, Napoleon was famous for risking his life on the battlefields in the Italian wars.
Even after becoming Emperor, he wouldn't move from his position while under enemy fire (there's a famous anecdote reported by many historians during the Russian campaign; a cannonball landed next to him but he wouldn't blink).
hashimirasama 1 year ago
@hashimirasama
SSTTEEAALLTTHH 1 year ago
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH
"But it's striking how they all were or at least claimed to be nationalistic"
Hey Genius, you've just picked a panel of states leaders well known for their military accomplishments and then you call 'em nationalists.
Once again, let me take your own examples and ask you the same question:
Is it possible that these men (Caesar, Scipio, Leonidas, Wellington...) were also driven by a strong patriotic sentiment?
hashimirasama 1 year ago
@hashimirasama

I just don't understand why there is so many "Internet heroes" trying to revive old hatred between France & England.
And just don't understand what is so stimulating about having an archenemy.
Every time I find a video about medieval time, you guys have to spoil it with stupid comments like: "bloody frogs..hate them...blah blah blah..."
Can't you just enjoy a damn video without taking to French-bashing?

The french got their asses kicked by the English during the hundred years war. They also got their asses kicked by the Spanish during the Italian Wars. The Germans also abused them during WWI and WWII. Their only time of glory.........Nepoleon's brief time in power and he wasn't even French.
themailman43 1 year ago
@themailman43, The hundred years war ended in a bloodbath for the English after the battle of Castillon. The French won most of the Italian wars, and left Italy after a grand "adventure" of loot, glory, and plunder, even the famous painting of the Mona Lisa was given to the French king. France was seen as a clear victor of WW I and WW II. Napoleon kicked the crap out of Europe for 25 years, plus it doesn't matter if he's French or not. Nationality doesn't affect military capability.
expertstrategy 1 year ago
@themailman43, France defeated the Spanish in the War of Devolution, War of Reunion, making France the most powerful nation for two centuries from 1648-1870. Their prestige lasted longer than Spain's. France was the main fighting force in the Western Front during WW I, and repelled all German offensives, at Somme, Verdun, First and Second battles of the Marne.
expertstrategy 1 year ago
@expertstrategy You clearly are forgetting about the british empire which was the first undisputed superpower for exactly those centuries you mentioned.
France prestige only surpassed the british in the napoleon empire whose time was too short to be considered as a hegemonic cycle.
EricoMartinsT 1 year ago
@EricoMartinsT, true Britain's empire was the first super power of its' time, and that is very amazing from a country three times smaller than Italy. Bravo to the British. You know France had its' own long glorious hegemony back in the day of Louis XIV to Louis XV, France was the most powerful country of its' age at that time from 1648-1763, until Britain took the role as the most powerful in the world after the Seven Years War. Every country has its' own hegemony, like Germany in WW II.
expertstrategy 1 year ago
@themailman43, The French were not always losers, in fact, most of the time, they are a frequent winner. If they are always losers, then France wouldn't exist. I suggest you watch these videos "French Military Victories part 1 and 2" It lists all of the wars they engaged in and won. and "French warriors part 1 and 2" these people made France a powerful country. as Charles De Gaulle once quoted, "France was built with a sword."

uncyclopedia on french warfare:
Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.
French Revolution - Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
The Napoleonic Wars - Lost. Temporary victories due to leadership of a Corsican (First Rule!), who ended up being no match for the Russian winter, Prussian grenadiers

hem, sorry but you claim that it isnt and that it's "probably russia" ? I think there is a lot of wars in which France took part and WON that you are not aware of.
- Saxon wars (772 804) Charlemagne conquering east saxons
- Conquest of Lombardy by Charlemagne (774- Val de Saire (1001)

mastercheff1216 2 years ago
all right, get these two out of the count if you wish, but that still makes a lot of french victories juste in the middle ages and early rennaissance, isn't it?
PipoMcGavin 2 years ago
@PipoMcGavin
Those were the franks, not the french.
that is a difference, because the franks were a germanic tribe.
Saying the franks and the french are the same is like saying the italians are all romans.
The french may descend from the franks, but... military degenerated }:)
phanthrax 2 years ago 2
hahahah you noticed I started from Charlemagne ? These are FRENCH victories don't play on words. The italian wars were not won by Franks. even if you take the few wars here won by Franks there are still plenty of them won by France. France took part in some of the most pathetic defeats, I know, but they also won brilliant victory, and more important , the great majority of the conflicts in which they took part.
And I'm not french , just fighting for historical accuracy ;)
PipoMcGavin 2 years ago
@PipoMcGavin Charlemagne was a Frank and so was his kingdom. France and Germany both grew out of his kingdom.
I agree that France is on of the most succesful European country when it comes to wars but they clearly lost in WW2... they were only lucky that Germany was torn apart by the rest of the world. ^^

@MacX1985 agreed for WW2
PipoMcGavin 1 year ago
@MacX1985 Yeah, it's funny b/c all the jokes about how much the French army suck and how they can't fight started in WWII
ELcapalla2 1 year ago

The Prussians could never have stood against the French in a 1 vs 1 pitched battle.
dukeofcanada 2 years ago 3
they beat them in the 1870's though

Who beat who? You mean Prussia beat France? Thats likely, virtaully every nation in Europe had beaten abd loat against every other nation at some point or another
Also, Napolean is infact French. He is of French bloob, also

Part of France, not Italy.

@expertstrategy yes go on please, and still you got no point

@TheDutchBarbarian, my point is France won a decent number of wars two-hundred years after Napoleon I. it is ignorant to say they never won a war after Napoleon I.

@ Hosea22: All true.
@ Hjernespreng: Also true.
MrUnicorn1995 2 years ago 4
Its called a joke, and don't preach to me about our Revolution I'm well aware that the French forces were invaluable to our success. Doesn't mean I can't still poke fun at them.
Oh and Napoleon was not French so that's not something the French can boast about. Theres also the fact he was defeated by Prussian forces. GO PRUSSIA!
Winterwolf00 2 years ago
Alright, yes he was demolished by Prussians, AFTER he subdued them. It wasn't until the post-Russia era that Napoleon lost to the Prussians, who originally were defeated by him because they had a rather outdated army. And yes, he was French. Corsica was his birthplace, and although that island was originally Genoan territory. He spent his life as a Frenchmen, he considered himslef French, he spoke French and he WAS French.
MrUnicorn1995 2 years ago 3
But regardless, this is a silly argument. I love the USA more than you think, but I have a peev against morons who insult other countries with no backing. However, judging by your intelligent response, you're smarter than I thought. My apologies.

But you have to closely consider what sides to ally with, what fronts to attack from or what fronts to strengthen defense on.
Also what settlements to take first.
If the HRE grabs Metz before you then they will become a poisonous torn in your side.
And If Milan takes Bern then they will become a snake by your heel.
