With Gmail they scan the content of your personal emails for "ad targeting". The profile also contains all of the searches you have ever done. They use this to target advertisers using their ad words service for now. This is a bit confusing. It's hard to tell if that list of senators voted for or against charging us for these internet features (I figured it out by looking at some obvious Senators). In fact, there is so much confusion floating around this issue that we may never get people fully informed.
I remember many years ago when I was in college, there was a thing called "netzero" and it really was a "free" internet service provider...if you had a phone line and could stand the pop-up ads. ;-)
The fact is, none of these things are free. Oh, and if you mean in a democratic way, then, well, no. The best way to combat the mainstream media takeover of the Internet is to only buy music, movies, books, magazines, and newspapers from alternative media, independent studios, and small record labels.
