@kinghulu im 23 mate and im about to finish my combat engineer course at gibraltar barracks in surrey, what i will say though is the engineers as a corp is very full might be limited to jobs on offer.
@kinghulu mate Combat Engineering is something that all engineers do, its a basic course they do, but after phrase 2 you can specialise into something I.E. Para Engineer.
@wayneellins hey i really wanna join the infantry to go frontline but i hate heights like on assalte courses and see if i was to join engineers will i need to do the assault courses aswell and go to frontline?
I have applied to be a Royal Engineer, and I want to maybe go on to be a Pilot. Do you know if I need any special grades to be accepted on the Pilot course?
@DipDop99 No you don't need any special grades, but to have served four years and to just pass the initial test to see if you are made out to be a pilot. But there is limited places and it is a very sought after position and competition is fierce. Good luck with your career and I wish you all the best for the future.
I built was one of the engineers that built this bridge :) it's fucked my back for ever though....not so nice. Any of you thinking of joining up, don't do it! Not worth risking your life for.....this is like the tamest thing I ever did in Afghan!! Op Chakush was far more extreme! Not good times!!!
you dont need any gcse's i recently joied the R.E , and my school grades are shit i got no GCSE's they help you get all the grades they want you to have in phase 1 and 2 training :)
I wanna join the sappers soon (im 16) but im half way through A levels and cant be arsed with them tbh. just wanna get out there as soon as possible and do something productive other than read and learn boring shit lol
Do yourself a favor, finish your (g)A(y) levels (:P). You've got your whole life to make a career in the armed forces / anything else you want, and you'll have a much better chance of getting a decent job afterwards anyway. Plus, if you get A levels you are more likely to be accepted for Officer training if you decide to join. Don't worry about it all being over by then, it won't be. You've already done have of the course, you might as well finish it.
Oh fucking tell me about it lol, had exactly the same. I've just got my results at A level. Couldn't have come quicker. Don't get my wrong, I loved being there, just the lessons were pretty bollocks most of the time. I only went in the first place because I didn't want to start work sooner and wanted to stay with my friends :P I've got the results I need now to be a pilot in the RAF though, something I've wanted to do since ever. It all ties together at the end, just hand in there mate :)
thats just the thing though, i hate my school. if i could carry on a levels somewhere else i would, but i go back on thursday :(
already, ive had a phone call from my teachers about work i didnt hand in LAST YEAR. that really takes the piss. the year hasnt begun and im already getting harrassed..
ill hang in there, but i dont think for that long lol
If you go to Afghan as a Sapper in a field unit you will be embedded with the infantry. On tour there is little difference between Cdo or Para badged engineers.
who ever said engineers dont fight or get attacked believe me u do.. engineers are even goin out on patrols now because there arnt enough infantry men
Ive just signed up as an Engineer, if all goes to plan i will have started training in september, and person below me, engineers have less than a 10% chance of having to fight, they only need to if the infantry soldiers are really in trouble.
Sappers are always first in and last out. So consequently they are well on the front line, so if a fire fight starts then you have to react accordingly. however if you go Airborne or Commando you are inbedded with the infantry. And basically do what they do but provide RE support when required rather than being En-masse so to speak.
If it is needed, but essentialy no they do not, as someone mentioned earlier, if you are building a bridge and you are ambushed, then they have no choice but to fight. Remember, everyone in the Army are soldiers first and tradesman second

We have the Royal Engineers take us for cadets (how laim considering everyone else commenting are actually sappers lol!) and we do all this sort of stuff so i know how hard all this actually is.
thanks a bunch for doing what you guys are doing. (and those who left :)
in my experience, explosives training is the most fun, main reason being that not many people apart from R.E. and other military forces can say 'I've used Plastic Explosives!!' that was a lot of fun to do aswell.
that was most fun for me, but im sure there are plenty of other things that make you feel good. i.e. clearing a minefield, or bridging.

Soldier - Obvious what that is.
Combat Engineer - Building/Destroying bridges, Mine clearance, Clearing out routes and many other jobs, They're trained to use explosives.
Tradesman - Depending on what trade you pick, U can be an electrician, plumber, carpenter and many other trades. You could be in a warzone building houses, clearing mines, building a bridge etc, So a pretty exciting job.

My brother and his regiment or squad or something had to make a bridge at night near the taliban base to cross the water or something without alerting the taliban first time it had ever been done.
Did 6 years, mostly in 28 Eng Reg, happy days.

But the Engineer drank on and said; "It's only gasoline."
