  • Based on Jimmy Page's session database, it looks like he did not play the lead guitar on "Cant' Explain". But Shel Talmy brought him in because he knew that Pete Townshend could not play lead guitar. Having said that, Pete Townshend had his unique style, similar to Eddie Cochran. Townshend did play more lead. But the claim that Pete Townshend and The Who would somehow upstage the pairing of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page is preposterous. Beck and Page did not need to smash their guitars.

  • Jimmy Page played the lead guitar part on The Who's "Can't Explain" because Pete Townshend could not play guitar. Townshend sucked as a guitar player. This is why he started destroying Les Pauls and Strats on stage. When you can't play the guitar, just break it into pieces. It is very stupid. And I think Jeff Beck mocks and parodies it in Blow Up. It is all tongue and cheek. And Beck destroys some very cheap prop type of guitar worth probably $30.

  • @kingoma61 wikipedia says (in italian, english & spanish) that jimmy played the rhythm guitar on that(1964)!! and according to some people the track never finished on the song... but the french wikipedia says that he did the solo because townshend was unable to do that as you say!! anyway it's true that at the time pete was not so good, but if you check after he met jimi hendrix in 66-67 his lead guitar work became better for some years(look at woodstock) try to get more information on the song!

  • Check out the guitar Jeff Beck is playing (or holding) in the concert scene. It is some cheapo guitar. Unlike Pete Townsend, Jeff Beck could not destoy a Les Paul or a Fender Strrat or a Telecaster. Destroying guitars is stupid. Setting guitars on fire is also stupid. Antonioni should have focused on the guitar playing by Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page and not the stupid gimmicks. Whooop dee doo. You destroyed a guitar. This is brainless and mindless and something Pete Townshend would only do.

  • Destroying guitars, especially expensive Les Pauls, is pretty stupid. I think Pete Townsend is considered the originator of this brain dead gimmick, basically to hide the fact that he could not play guitar. Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, on the other hand, could play guitar. Page even played lead guitar on records by The Who. Townsend is no match for Beck or Page as a guitarist. So I think Blow Up would have sucked if The Who were in the movie. Just listen to Beck and Page solo on this track.

  • A TRUE MASTERPICE ON OF THE BEST MOUVIESEVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA! PROBABLY .THE BEST EVER.! A MASTERPICE !

  • Great movie. Hipness and hedonism of swinging London.

  • The music is "Stroll On" featuring the dual lead guitar work of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Jeff Beck is heard first with the overdriven feedback drenched opening with Jimmy Page providing the second lead guitar break. At the time, this was state of the art electric guitar pyrotechnics. Even in 2010, the Jeff Beck-Jimmy Page guitar work has withstood the test of time.

  • @kingoma61 interesting observation.....i had the pleasure of seeing both of them, as they played in their first bands....both yardbirds and zep in 1969. i just wonder how much better the film would of been,,,with the original group Antonioni had wanted. and the REAL reason why the Yardbirds are filmed destroying their instruments.

do you know...WHO... the band was suppose to be?

  • great film!

  • This movie must have been the height of "hipness" back in the mid-60s! It's still amazing today, for far more than just its "mod" fashions and attitudes of course.

  • i looked up the yardbirds song and saw this witch has that song on it

    yardbirds are a cool band

  • LOVE this movie!
