This is a reminder that Carreras knew how to sing correctly, with the correct closed sounds in the right places, .. but later he decided to open the voice in the passagio, with deleterious effects.. Now he is 63 yrs old and has a hard time singing a high G. Let alone anything above it.. Its a real shame too.
You don't suppose it had anything to do with leukemia do you? During the marrow treatment he took immune sytem supressors and got fungus growths in this throat. I've noted that people who have mushrooms growing in their larynx tend to sing worse afterwards.
@Agorante Carreras recovered from Leukemia, and, sang wonderfully after that, but he always tended to open through the passagio.. probrably sounded better to his ears, but it is NOT good vocal technique and it ruins voices.
she is wonderful (as always), beyond the point of commenting here... but could he sing THEN(!!), he had the talent AND freshens (i find this much better than his recoding with Scotto) i agree with tenorsanyone - it is possible that the "power of youth", is underestimated in singing in general (??) ... another issue is a tendency not to bother when one "has made it" - like del Monaco (also with Rothenberger) just couldn't care less even finishing words with right vowels...
What a fabulous voice Carreras possessed in his prime, arguably more beautiful and exciting than that of the other "Three Tenors." I don't discount Carerras's brave and successful fight against leukemia, for which he deserves all the credit in the world. (As a cancer survivor, I can understand and empathize with him.) But his vocal problems predated that diagnosis, because he had plunged into heavy roles all too soon --
Rothenberger made a Deutsche Querschnitt of La Traviata on EMI---I have it in LP!!! It may be buried with me: its a Masterpiece and the German adds to make her Perfect. She was das Beste.
This clip provides a good example of the ravishing tone that drew such praise in the early days of Carreras' career. What a lovely, unforced lyric sound! Such a voice is always ephemeral, a blessing of youth. It cannot be spared by technique, and certainly not by the ravages of illness and age.
Carreras such a beautiful voice. I presume this is one of Anneliese Rothenberger's programmes. Do not slant her. This wonderful singer, here a little older and very late in her career, brought opera to many people. I for one as a youngerster used to watch her programmes and was introduced thus to the world of opera, her singing with other starts like Mario del Monaco, Herman Prey etc. Rotherberger furthermore has help many many young talented singers with their career, giving them exposure .
I agree 100% She is a very wonderful singer. And a great person, also very helpful to opera. I would imagine that this was in 75 or 76, so very early in Carreras' career. She still sounds amazing even though she was at the latter stage of her career.
Thank goodness for programs like this one so that we have a record of the work of so many fine singers. I only wish more had followed her example. It is a pleasure to hear again the beauty of the young Carreras voice.
I agree ! She had a wonderful voice. And if a tenor cannot handle even a light soprano such as Rothenberger, it is his own fault. Anyway, I do not hear much inbalance. If there is, it is probably because a bad recording favours the thinner high notes of a soprano over the richer tenor notes. But I adore both singers, so I am happy to find a duet of the two.

Spare us the passagio BS.

Beautiful singing by Carreras! Rothenberger, although she has a pretty voice, was a little too loud and overwhelms him a bit.
