I don't know about 1980, but this track reached Philly in March,1982 on two labels -Rissa Chrissa (All Black label), and Brunswick. We rocked this uptown 'til about October. "The Message" dropped in July.
Man...This record made Rap history!! It's one of the FIRST rap records to talk about political and social issues. It came out YEARS before "The Message" (by Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five). This jam even talks about "foreign oil", which is a major concern TODAY. "The Big Throwdown" was way ahead of it's time!!!
@johnnyroast "The Big Throwdown" originally came out in 1980, on Rissa-Chrissa Records. Then, Brunswick picked -up the record and continued its release in 1981.
Ahhhhhhhh! Man I've looking for this jam for 26 years! Me and my drumline at Salem High in Jersey stole the intro beat and had the funkiest streetbeat of any marching band in South Jersey in fall of '82.
@MrToot87 U aint lying Ive been looking for this to. See this is something u pump riding by the projects with that ol'skool monte carlo,15" crager or keystone with 4 six by nines and dont 4get the whiskers{fender skirts} U dont know bout that
This was released in the very early eighties, and people love it today, even though it was only going to be used as a rough demo. Mike Serrette rapped and played most of the instruments. He wanted to re-record it after they signed a record deal. But the demo sounds hot!!
I was reading Mike Serrette's MySpace page and he said that "THE BIG THROWDOWN" was a very rough demo that the record company released. He wanted to re-do the production before releasing it. But I think the song is phenomenal! Damn! Jam on it Mike Serrette!!!!!

Melle Mel's verse on The Message was actually the last verse on the B-side of Super Rappin' in 1979 -- so technically, he is still the first :)

I was spinning at Chuck's Disco in North Philly when I first heard this (March '82). This was before the Run-DMC era.

Even though this came out in 1981, the lyrics perfectly describe today's economic crisis.
