To be honest, I don't like Fantasy movies (I prefer Sci-Fi) but this movie blew me away - very interesting storyline, nice visual effects, great acting. James Purefoy was brilliant as Solomon. I like the idea that the main warrior/killer/hero was religious. Rachel Hurd-Wood was stunning as well. "Solomon Kane" is interesting, sometime even shocking and criminally underrated movie. I hope they will make a sequel
heh....funny my prior comment got three negative votes.....I didn't say anything untrue or even insulting.....guess there be trolls. btw read the solomon kane book...worth a read, the pirate stories i din't care for, but the more supernatural stuff was awesome.
There is no "rascism" in the Kane stories. At one point, Howard describes how Kane mentally rails against speaking formally to a "savage", but this only points out what the typical white european mind might actually have thought in such a situation in those times. Remember, Kane's blood brother is a black witch doctor.
True. But at first Kane almost recoils from Nlonga owing to his 'Dark Magic' and simply who he is.
Its only later when Nlonga earns Kane's trust that he becomes a blood brother.
Just read the descriptions of the African peoples and you'll get a pretty vivid picture. Ape-like features, upturned snouts for noses, barrels of primitive muscle... all that stuff.
Yes, any christian would recoil from such pagan practices. You're right about the descriptions, but remember that, other than the "ape-like features" stuff, the rest of the descriptions pretty much match those of Conan, Kull, etc. From REH, they were compliments, not insults.
@Chromemagnus Exactly , Remember Howard was from Texas , and it wasn't as if that time in history didn't generally except many prejudices and racism. Plus he is a hypicritacal zealot , who at times is almost a anti hero ..... It is one of Howard's more complex characters.
@Chromemagnus Your so exactly right , and I hope people will read these stories , because they are very good , much better then the stupid movie in which they don't cover the character at all and just make a mockery of Hobard's work.
" Kane stood, an unconscious statue of triumph—the ancient empires fall, the dark-skinned people fade and even the demons of antiquity gasp their last, but over all stands the Aryan barbarian, white-skinned, cold-eyed, dominant, the supreme fighting man of the earth, whether he be clad in wolf-hide and horned helmet, or boots and doublet—whether he bear in his hand battle-ax or rapier—whether he be called Dorian, Saxon or Englishman—whether his name be Jason, Hengist, or Solomon Kane."
No racism huh? You know nothing about REH. Don't try to fit Howards writings into your PC world if you can't handle it. REH and HP lovecraft were both huge racists if you can't handle that oh well, but don't try and say it wasn't the case when it was.
I've been reading REH all my life, I think I know quite a bit about him. He possessed a justifiable pride in his race, and there is nothing wrong with that. I've lived and worked around half the globe in my life and find all ethnicities to possess this qualitiy, and it is there for a reason, so perhaps you need to leave YOUR "PC" 20-20 out-of-context hindsight behind.
Varanid9: you may have read REH works but you clearly do not know anything of the man himself. There is a book that I own you should read which contains letters that both REH and Lovecraft exchanged. In those letters are clear examples of both of their prejudices against many minorities. Google the subject, you'll find many of these letters online if you look.
There is much that the PC element considers to be "rascism" that really isn't if taken in a broader context. However, I shall research the letters you have pointed out to me.
Ran one of the One Sheet adventures for SK at a convention over the weekend. It went extremely well! While 'Deadlands' is my fav, Kane is dancing awfully close!

Howard also viewed "savages" as superior to civilized men. Read his greatest Conan story, "Beyond the black river".

My point exactly.

also the fact that you said there is no racsim in any of the Kane stories suggests you didn't read all of his works.

Great review! Lovely intro into the character origin and the works of Howard. Which I didn't really do in my review :). Cheers, R.
