Notre Dame is a Catholic institution, and champions Catholic ideals, but there are liberal members of the faculty as well as staunch conservatives.

Notre Dame offered to bestow an honorary Doctor of Law to the President, and they invited him to speak at the university's spring commencement. When choosing to distinguish someone with such an honor, Universities are not simply looking for people with compelling ideas, they are looking for people who best represent what they themselves represent.

Those of us who are unhappy with the administration's decision to honor the President are not interested in silencing the ideas of those who do not agree with us.

There is a clear difference between granting someone a forum in which to speak, and bestowing an honor upon said person.
