I find it shocking that many people think 4k > 1080 footage. Sure it has more pixels, but that is not what makes a camera good or bad. I couldn't care less if it was all in 720 tbh.
@GeorgeMaier Actually it is part of it. The main thing that differentiates the Red from the others featured here is the ability to shoot RAW, over and under crank as well as a greater latitude. If you don't know what that means in a production environment in terms of flexibility and achieving a look - look it up. RAW = much more control in post.
It's really funny how these RED fanbois couldn't accept the fact that DSLR videos are just as good IF not better (IF you know how to utilize the DSLR's limitations)
C'mon 15K vs 2-3K? A no brainer... Even the popular HOUSE MD series used the 5D in their season finale episodes plus several TV ads accross the globe.
@NixxerJixxerWixxer As a producer - You always use the right tools for the right job. SLRs have their uses and I've completed many projects using them but id take an epic, NEX FS 100 or an F3 over one any day. We only use SLRs on constrained budgets - and you can achieve MUCH more on the Pro cameras when using them to their fullest extent. A good DP and crew make a difference but if you use the wrong tools they can only do so much.
Canon is well known for aliasing problems on their DSLR's and low end camcorders. All DSLR's have rolling shutter problems. But at least you can have some control over that. Unlike Canon with the aliasing problem you have to be very carefull what you film and sometimes you wont't know until you view the video on a monitor.
ok,i know we are supposed to be talking about the cameras and such...but why don't anyone talk about the "short" itself.I think it is absolutely a masterful, provocative little jem.The performance of the main character is incredibly haunting and memorable...the music is just sensational.it totally wrenches ur heart.this is truelly a powerful stuff.great direction.i would really like to know the name of the main lady and the singer and any of their other work...this is highly recommendable stuff.
I dont think the video is intended to compare any resolution or compression, but the look of it, when u know what you are doing you can use any type of equipment and make look good. " it is not the Arrow, but the indian"
I see a lot of people making excuses for the red. its big and expensive enough to stand up for it self. all i can say is I won't be buying one any time soon but my gh1 is in the post
It is an unfair comparasion for red because the output monitor is not 3k so you really will not see the 3k quality. Next year there will be more ultra HD monitor with resolution up to 4k then the red footage will have no competion with a canon 5d
Why would you discuss which camera is the best if the winner is clearly decided by who is using it? I would like to add though that the 5D and the Lumix are consumer/prosumer level cameras, and they hold up quite nicely against an almost motion picture grade filmcamera. You get something like 85% functionality at 10% the price of the Red One.
Can I just say to whoever photographed and directed this short film, there is some stunning photography in there, regardless of the camera that was used. i think the photographers skill helps mask to some extent any defects inherent in the cameras used. Beautiful work, I watched it many times, lots of wonderful imagery!
The Panasonic holds its own pretty well, but when you say ultra prime lens, are you talking about a Zeiss one? Cos that's not much less than the RED ONE camera...
Well, RED has more stable and fluid motion than 5D. But the dynamic range of RED colors looks more "compressed". I think 5D with a little longer shutter speed setting and a shoulder mount could produce better results than RED. Overall all of these 3 cam's are great :)
Compressed internet video - not a good way to compare cameras from another. Red One will always be the best. Just think about it. Fixed cmos problems, 4K res and 12 bit vs aliasing, rolling shutter, HD res, 8 bit. Just look at these shots together in full res and then compare! But at the other hand are still cameras a pretty good low cost alternative. Good at low light. BTW Red's new MX sensor will now also do the job in low light situations!
@Artcam87 Red One has the rolling shutter problem too. It's not quite as bad as 5D's, but it's not far off and it can limit you on shots. Plugin out for After Effects and Nuke which corrects it.
Every pro camera has its own strengths and limitations. You have to learn how to work around them. You do notice it when grading with 8-bit color on the 5D, so it's probably a better idea to get the picture close to how you want in the camera prior to compression. 5D can look stunning on the big screen.
That was brilliant and beautiful. I'd never heard of the red one but from i can gather its a professional grade camera. It doesnt however disgrace the other two. In fact the panny looks a bit of a bargain. Anyway great video, very professional.
I'm with you on this one... To make Still Photography of Food Pictures or Product I use my Nikon D60 and for video the Panasonic HS 300 camcorder... customers don't want to go in a Hi-Budget... So they get what they pay for
In the dark, the RED didn't do very well. The picture was very grainy and rather then a soft blur it gave more of a distorted fragment blur. In the bright light however, the RED gave very vivid colours and came out quite clear. The Canon did pretty good in most situations but did best close up in the dark and the light. The Lumix did very well in every situation, light dark, far close. But the lst shots used with the Lumix had a very yellow tone to it but that could be because of lighting.
RED could very well be more sensitive. That's where no doubt the 5D beats it.
A shame 5D image quality is full of aliasing.
I think the RED footage wasn't shot with Build 20 and debayered with new color science, that would vastly improve IQ and low light performance.
I think the RED footage was very poorly graded. I you're comparing a RAW camera with DSLRs that shoot H264 with gamma curve baked in, just thrown some curves to take the RED's image's contrast to somewhat similar.
great video !

GH1 - ultraprime CINEMA lens
Canon - canon L - ziess -SLR lens
RED - Nikkor - SLR lens
The prices and quality between the SLR and cinema lens are huge.

The Panasonic is obviously not on the same level as the others, but it holds it's own for these purposes.
That is until you realize that it's $1100 and includes a kit lens. So as far as value it's a star.
5D shows up the Red imo considering it's half the price.

Red One is the latest "Thing". More and more people choose to shoot on RED over 35mm.
Some of the productions shot on RED are: "The Book of Eli", "Antichrist", "District 9", "Knowing", "Unbelievable" and "Sanctuary".

that RED is shit quality- has the dynamic range of a toaster - everything is blown out.

I'm pretty sure RED image quality can deliver (and a lot).
Lots of high quality results out there.
If RED image looks like shit the camera was operated by a shitty op or DP, simple as that.
