If EVER any singer DESERVED every inch of the Grammy Award, it's Ms. Gorme for this intense, beautiful interpretation of the big song from "Mame" which she was awarded in 1967 (I think...?). I haven't watched the Grammy-s since the mid-to-late 80's. I guess you know you're REALLY well into middle-age when not only do you not know the new songs, but you can't distinguish between the name of the song, the groups, the album or the group or singer. Yikes! I've become my dad.
WOW! She is amazing. I saw her in person at the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle in the 80's. Everyone came up to me, thinking I was her daughter. They say I look like Eydie. I wish I sang like her. Thanks for posting her. Janice
Attention Glee wannabes and existing castmembers - study this, learn the techniques, and try to channel the emotions before singing again. Each of you is wonderful, talented, trained, and skilled. You need to stretch out a little, however, beyond fluff and belting, in order to reach this level of "selling" your songs.

There was no one better in her hayday than Eydie Gorme, a fellow Bronx gal like me. I wish I could sing half as well as her and this song is, in my estimation, the best and most beautiful song she ever did. Love ya, Eydie!
This woman never fails to astonish me. Such a thrilling belt and more importantly, such finesse and phrasing. Whitney "Melisma" Houston isn't fit to spray Eydies hair.
AMERICAN IDOL CONTESTANTS SHOULD WATCH AND LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO BEFORE THEY EVEN ATTEMPT A BALLAD. EMULATING THE INCREDIBLE EYDIE GORME WOULD BRING THE HOUSE DOWN! ps Eydie won an Emmy as Best Female Vocalist for this recording
No one should be surprised that Eydie won a Grammy for this record. This is what USED to win Grammies. I defy anyone to come up with a Grammy winner in the last 20-30 years that has 1/10 the power and majesty.
Streisand is good but Gorme is great! Had Eydie done Funny Girl instead of Streisand she would have received the Oscar and the much deserved attention from the entertainment industry. Eydie was offered the role but turned it down because Steve was denied the role Omar Sheriff played in the movie. Eydie has always been underrated and Streisand overrated... what a pity!
@liebtiff : I'd like to say both singers are great and just a matter of preference in terms of whose the better. However I for one agree with you in the sense that Edyie has always been underrated as a singer, and with her talent/gift should have been much bigger. I lover her voice and she can belt notes out with the best of them...and yes, I like her much more than Streisand.
I always enjoy listening to this song, and trying to sing along with it (by myself, of course, in the car) on KIXI am 880. It's such a sad song....Eydie has such a beautiful voice......
@jazzmannanaimo I've also heard it on satellite radio as well.....she has an awesome voice! It's too bad that they got rid of many of the radio personalities on KIXI. I enjoy listening to Imagination Theater....my parents liked listening to KIXI when I was growing up. I guess that's why I still enjoy listening to it (I'm 50 now)....
She found the exact emotional center of that song - with a dash of wistfulness and a tinge of regret - guns blazing in acknowledgment at the end - it's one of those things only a skilled technician can pull off and all the while make it look easy. That's a Rolls Royce, baby!
This video should be used in a master class. You get to see how the top singers back in the day used amazing breath control combined with impeccable phrasing. Even though Eydie Gorme's performance is technically spot on, she communicates the lyrics in such an authentic emotional fashion. In other words, she "sells the song" to you. We are absolutely held in thrall. Remember, many of the recordings were done live with the orchestra. This performance was done right off the floor. Bravo!
First heard Lansbury's version, so that will always be my favorite. However, this still knocks my socks off! I'm furious that The Kennedy Center has not made Steve & Eydie honorees of their annual 5 great artists. They deserve it.
Eydie does a stunning "If He Walked Into My Life" & so does Ann Dee with her velvet toned voice on classic "Free Again" Lp arranged by Ernie Freeman that slipped through the cracks but known as underground vocal masterpiece...love these versions best and would be awesome if somebody would post Ann Dee version!
In the mid fifties I was walking through a Fair in Topsfield Ma. & I heard a girl singing &I thought to myself, WOW she can really belt out a song.Well I found out her name was Eydie Gorme but she wasn,t famous then & I had never heard of her but I have loved her voice ever since

But brava to both singer's. God I wish these singer's would come back in style!!! Not like this shit today!
I may have already responded to this, but I do so again...I cannot believe that there are any DISLIKES posted here, as there are! This is just an absolutely fabulous performance by Gorme.
@carlos3765 you "prefer Judy for her understated ease in singing a torch song'??? Are we talking about Judy Garland? Don't get me wrong-I adore Judy-but, well subtle nuance was hardly her strong suit. Anyway, it's only my opinion. Point taken though about Ms. Gorme-but I lover HER all the more because of her giving it her all.
I watched Steve and Eydie on The Carol Burnett Show as a kid and so wanted them to be my parents. I could listen to her cover of this a million times (and probably have) and cry every time. Both she and Steve are cherished blessings in my life.
The first time I heard her voice was on the radio in 64' or 65', I was a horn player, and blown away by this super talent! She still sends chills down my spine, when I hear the 3rd and 4th rate female singers they are turning out today!
One of the best singers ever. Voice, emotion, phrasing, feeling. I agree that she can stand with Judy Garland (who is my all-time favorite ). After we lost Judy, I was extra thankful that we had Eydie to belt out a song.
Exactly what I was thinking, hunterv41. I have heard her recording of this song a thousand times and was always so impressed by her singing of it, but I had never seen her do it before now. The passion she obviously puts into her singing (esp. of a song like this one) is incredible to watch. I'm so glad to be able to watch her sing as well as listen!
I heard her on the XM station "Ciriusly Sinatra" yesterday and thought, "Who is that fantastic singer?!" I was ashamed that I didn't recognize her voice! What a magnificent talent! When in Mexico several years ago, I heard her singing in Spanish and DID recognize her voice. I asked the waiter if that was Edye and he told me (in Spanish) that she was extremely popular in Hispanic countries throughout the world and that was her biggest market. Interesting. She's great!
I've just rediscovered Eydie. I remember her from the '60s. Now that I hear her today I think she's the last great female voice. How beautiful and sensual. All have hailed others, but there's just not the same quality. I'm glad I lived to appreciate this voice. Cheers! Mike
It makes me weep that there aren't performers like this, in their prime, for me to see or hear live. Oh, to have been born about 25 years earlier. Lots of posts about her heritage, and I suppose that's important to some people,...but to me, not as important as the instant joy transmitted when this woman opens her mouth to sing. That song was magnificent!!
This lady is ageless! Prime or not, she can still sell out arenas and break into the charts. But I see what you mean and agree with you. Today's entertainers don't know what talent means. As for Susan Boyle! Don't get me started!!!!
Shirley Bassey is "still" incredible, but my comment was, "in their prime". I'd still pay money to see her, but there is no logic that will testify she is still in her prime.
I read that she was born in the Bronx, NY. Her father was from Siciliy and her mom was Turkish. They were Sephardic Jews which means that Edyie's ancestors were originally Spanish Jews from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal). My ancestors were Sephardic Jews that ended up in the Netherlands & Turkey after they were expelled from Spain. Eydie speaks Ladino which is the language of the Spanish Jews and of course she speaks and sings in Spanish.
Saw Steve Lawrence November 9--Had to see this one today over and over!!!!Thanks for the post and you tube!!!!! Missed you Eydie "MORE THAN YOU KNOW"!
Had to have my Eydie fix. Love her and this song. I was in NYC in the 60's when this was a big hit. I think I must have played it everyday. I hope I helped make it a big hit. I lived on Central Park West just a few blocks from Steve and Edie and would see them from time to time taking a cab or just walking into their building. I have always loved them both
I know of Ms. Eydie Gorme through Trio los Pancos and honestly thought that she was of latin-american descent, wow was I wrong...I educated myself about her and WOW she is mesmerizing...what singer and now learning more and more about her I am just so fascinated by her and how she sings, this is like finding a buried treasure, I love it!!
She is actually Turkish, born and raised in Ankara where she met Steve Lawrence, married and came to USA...She is a prolific singer in various languages...
She met Steve when they were working together on "The Steve Allen Show" in NYC. Steve was actually underage when he began performing on the show but was legal when they got married. ;O)
Actually I was mistaken; she has a Turkish-Jewish ancestry and was born in Bronx...You are right; she did meet Steve Lawrence @ Steve Allen show...Thanks for the correction. In either case, I think her Ladino background gave her the ability to perform wide range of music in various languages...She was revered in Turkey as the Turks accepts her as one of their own.
Every time I listen and see this video it is awesome! What connection she maintains with the audience and you can tell by the applause how taken they all are with Edyie. Also, listen to her other songs, and Steve Lawrence's too. They have a cool website where you can get really decent music that still sounds like music, thank God.
I've posted a comment here before about how wonderful this is, but after so many viewings, I am really compelled to say: When they write the history books about popular singers and popular songs in the 20th Century, what will be lifted up as the ultimate example will be Eydie Gorme singing "If He Walked Into My Life". I know Jerry Herman personally. (I wrote his musical revue "Showtune".) He told me that "If He Walked Into My LIfe" was his favorite song and that Eydie's recording was the best.
From the moment I first heard Edie, back in 1983 as a 27 year old salesman driving through the streets of Pittsburgh, I thought to myself...who is this woman...this voice?! I soon discovered that it was the music of the prior generation and it made me wonder, why I was born so late? Now, some 25 years later it still takes me back to a simpler better time... for a few minutes anyway. Steisand, Celine, Whitney....great singers all. But there's only one Edie Gorme and she'll always be my fav.
I know the one you mean - that was an AM station - I wasn't even thinking of that one. The FM stations were WSHH, WJOI and something around 92 on the FM dial.
Your memory serves you better than mine :) I was already a fan of talk radio even in my 20's, hence I listened to AM radio quite a bit and still am even to this day. Still a big fan of Eydie too!
Gee, I thought I was the only one that loved Eydie. Glad to hear it from others. Yes, we all turn up the volume when we hear her sing. Really a stand out.
This just tears my heart out. What beautiful phrasing, what believable emotion and what a gorgeous voice. She and Steve would, unfortunately, starve to death if they were starting out today. Sic transit gloria mundi.
She was always my fav singer. What a voice. I also heard Bassey and cannot decide who's better. Maybe a tie. However, Edyie's lyrics are more clear and understandable.
she is a chanteuse in the real sense of the word. Not only does she have a more than marvelous voice, but she does so much with the lyrics so you feel every word.
I consider Eydie Gorme singing Jerry Herman's "If He Walked Into My Life" from the musical "Mame" to be the finest popular singer singing the finest Broadway ballad. It just doesn't get any better than this for Showtune afficiandos like myself.
I do love Eydie Gorme, she can't do wrong, every song by her is great. One of the best, a real delight. Not only a voice, but the way she interprets. She is really magnificent. God Bless You Eydie! We love you!
FLAWLESS, STUNNING PERFECTION!

Eydie speaks Ladino which is the language of the Spanish Jews and of course she speaks and sings in Spanish.

Watching this video she suddenly seems the greatest torch singer ever. No one ever sang this as grandly as she!

Edyie Gorme was born in the Bronx on August 16, 1931. Her father, a tailor, was born in Sicily and her mother born in Turkey

one of Eydie's great versions.

One of the rare torch song performances that can stand beside Garland.
pepsipoptarts 2 years ago 29
@pepsipoptarts OK performance, but "stand beside Garland"??? That's quite a stretch.... (PS What's that at 2:54??? Yikes.... )

@mmdillon1 Eydie Gorme sings circles around Judy Garland.

PielMorena97 2 years ago
She is actually Turkish, born and raised in Ankara where she met Steve Lawrence, married and came to USA...She is a prolific singer in various languages...
amasra56 2 years ago
She met Steve when they were working together on "The Steve Allen Show" in NYC. Steve was actually underage when he began performing on the show but was legal when they got married. ;O)
ohbutyes 2 years ago
Actually I was mistaken; she has a Turkish-Jewish ancestry and was born in Bronx...You are right; she did meet Steve Lawrence @ Steve Allen show...Thanks for the correction. In either case, I think her Ladino background gave her the ability to perform wide range of music in various languages...She was revered in Turkey as the Turks accepts her as one of their own.
amasra56 2 years ago
@amasra56 Her Former Manager told me she was Latina on both sides of the family, guess he is wrong

Best rendition of this song I ever heard.

But there's only one Edie Gorme and she'll always be my fav.
jbthe4th 2 years ago 4
At that time, Pittsburgh had three FM radio stations that played this kind of music. Do you remember which one you heard it on?
porter4 2 years ago
I don't remember the call letters but they always referred to their format as "The music of your life."
jbthe4th 2 years ago
I know the one you mean - that was an AM station - I wasn't even thinking of that one. The FM stations were WSHH, WJOI and something around 92 on the FM dial.
porter4 2 years ago
Your memory serves you better than mine :) I was already a fan of talk radio even in my 20's, hence I listened to AM radio quite a bit and still am even to this day. Still a big fan of Eydie too!

Im an 80 year old man in tears. My God this was beyond beyond. In the early 60's she recorded an album with Don Consta called Eydie in love.
Get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, I thought I was the only one that loved Eydie. Glad to hear it from others. Yes, we all turn up the volume when we hear her sing. Really a stand out.

LIke a gorgeous primal scream of TOTAL tonal clarity and authenticity. EDIE!!
You are AWESOME! I am here with Elvis Sinatra and WE appreciate the extraordinary BRAVERY of this FABULOUS performance. Edie we LOVE you!
sexbrain 2 years ago 3
Does Eydie still include this song in her act since her son passed away?
It would be very difficult for her to sing this, one would think.
She's a trouper, though, and she may be able to get through the song for her fans.

Both helluva singers.

she is a chanteuse in the real sense of the word.

Eydie knew the difference....singing versus screaming. She had subtle power. Fantastic.
