Shillton saw me play when I was younger, he said I was the best goalkeeper he had ever seen & that I would revolutionise football as we know it by the time I led England to the world cup victory, he said I was so good we would no longer use defenders, just strikers...well very soon I am going to give up my job as a wallpaperer for Bradford council & my part time job in the chippie and adorn my gloves of magic!
grew up thinking shilton was the best, then i hated him when he almost cost arsenal the title in 1989, when we lost 2-1 at home to derby, and shilton did save after save, but bottom line is, even now hes better than arsenals 2 keepers..
its too subjective to say who is the best of all time. Schmeichel and Shilton were very similar. Banks and the Hungarian were the best of their era. Today, I'd say there are many excellent goallies, though no-one great. So there are about 5 to chose from. Chose your favourite. Personally in their prime, I'd stop what I was doing to watch them play, as I would Zidane and Maradonna.
The greatest positional 'keeper who ever tended the sticks. No-one today, even those at world-level, attacks a forward coming through to close the angle like he did; they all stay back waiting for it to happen. When I was a lad, playing amateur league, a coach told me, "You own this area" (the twelve yard box) - Shilton was the absolute King of his domain..
@ukgolfa ...i couldn't agree with you more...i used to show tapes of his positioning with a goalkeeper training group i was with after 2nd div...yeah...seems alot of keepers today are line keepers and wait for it...then you have guys like buffon who get 1 shot on goal that's good every three games and they consider him great..lol...
All the kids today who are inspired to put on the green, yellow (or my favourite, black, with #22 embroidered on the back) jersey, need to watch footage of Yashin, Banks, Shilton and Schmeichel. That should just about cover all they will ever need to know about the art of goalkeeping.
It's subjective of course, because I don't believe you can compare eras, or for that matter convince those that think better saves have been made; but it's a start.
I grew up on Gordon Banks, and to this day he made the greatest save I've ever seen; but for me, Shilton was the definitive as far as controlling and being in command of that which he was there to protect.
Shilton was a great keeper, and played along time at the top of the game, but Pat jennings was his superior. especially in close range shot stopping and reflex. Shilton said it himself many times
i saw peter shilton about 2 months ago at my iceskating lessons and he said to me and my dad that he was auditioning for dancing on ice 2010 - and apparently he got through the auditions and will be on the show next year - i seen him skate and hes not that good but should be good entertainment - hes a amizing person and a realy genuine guy :)
Fantastic footie player and a really down to earth guy as well. I deliver his newspapers and I couldn't believe how lovely he was the first time I met him, a great inspiration to all football players around the world. This videos brilliant, thanks for the upload. =] x
