You should ALWAYS have it out when you're retreating, all it takes is one crocket or attentive sniper after a stab and you're dead.

Your problem, you aren't going enoughly forward, and you mostly have 70% chanced of not getting the back stab.

Always try to be as clost to them, even try to bump in them, not to reach the limits.

@328805 and as almost every sniper will have a tribalman's shiv. even if the spies shoot the sniper with a revolver , a good sniper would just turn around and kill that spy

@ffalsa the kukiri almost does as much damage in one hit than the shiv + bleed time, and the ambassador will kill in two shots. in any pub no sniper will ever kill you in time and why the hell would you get within melee range when you're shooting?

@ffalsa first off, they're both revolvers so what I said is correct and second, you don't need two consecutive head shots to kill a sniper. just one head shot and one body shot and he's dead with no time to react. Also they die very quickly with the original revolver with it having a higher base damage.

Also, take note: Since the new patch, de-cloaking early will still drain your cloak to 0, and disguising as a friendly class will leave the corpse of the class you disguised as, so the enemy think they've killed a non-spy.
