Why waste the money and replace it? It can usually be fixed with a little WD40. It's not that the drive goes bad per say... It's more of a build up of dust that slows the driver.
so your saying that if you keep the card from your old drive and just put it in a new one it will still work? but does the new drive have to be the same model as the old one, can you put your old card into a newer model?

@xXExtremeSkaterXx well i havent really been playing xbox all to much, too busy. and so i havent treid to really fix it, but i found that if i download the game onto my hard drive before i play it, it has no problems aslong as the game is on the hard drive. so thats what i've been doing just downloading the game when its what im playing at the time. hopefully when things start to slow down again and i can play more often i'll think about getting a new xbox but until then its good lol

Unless you have an electrical engineering degree and or work on these specific consoles why would you follow some dumbass on youtube. No matter what you do the specific console has the disc driver coded onto its mobo. Do not do this at all. They have to completly recode your firmware on your console's mobo when they replace any part. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS TOOL.

@SpiralSubject the reason why the motor is not spinning is because of the eye.. in order for you to fix it you have to replace the eye for a new eye... the reason why the motor that spins the disk is not spinning is because the eye of the disk drive is already useless or in other words its broken.. soo yea its the eye you have to change/replace not the motor that spins the disk...
i saw another video where they were talking about the motor like u are and how it doesn't let the disc spin but they showed how to take apart the motor to isolate the spin rod and they lubricated the rod and put it back together. thas wut i'm tryin to do right now but i can't figure out how to take apart the motor...any help and advice would be appreciated

just so everyone's clear....not EVERYONE has a Hitachi disc drive. There are three or four different ones floating around in Xbox's so just make sure you get the right replacement. If you get the wrong one, you can fuck some shit up bad.

The reason you cannot just replace a dvd drive is due to the fact that Every DVD drives PCB has a firmware chip in the firmware there is a DVD Key if it dose not match the XBox's it will just be a expsensive DVd Player

this works on all xbox 360s, just make sure you buy the right replacement drive, you can find them all on ebay, don't buy the cheapest one either. only do this guys method if you are not capable of flashing the firmware on a new drive, this is a good way to fuck up your brand new drive.

Wow, i can plainly see i did this wrong as my card still has that blue ribbon cable with the guard on it... probably should have watched this first. My xbox has had problems for about 4 months now and i finally (through my cleaning the laser) broke it. I looked inside and found that there was a bubble in the laser. fun.
One thing you should do before you try to replace the board on a DVD drive is get the DVD key from the firmware (on the faulty drive, so long as it still works to some extent)
If the board fails.. you're screwed for life.. but if you have the DVD key saved you can get any of the 3 types of drives for the 360 and use your DVD key on that drive.

yea.. i definately have a philips and it doesnt have any ribon wires.. i bought it brand new and instead of ribon wires, theyre soldered wires to the card.. any help there? and the damn middle piece wont spin too freely either lol
i was actually opening and shutting the disc tray for about 35 mins.. and he told me to tap on the vent right next to the hard drive when the discwhen its going back in.. and it actually worked first try... but a ghetto way to do it tho lol
hey just wondering- my xbox is running the hitachi drive so this video is relevant and will work no worries- but i was offering to fix a mates and im not sure untill i see his xbox what drive it has but my question is, is that disk drive model #GDR-3120L work with any of the xbox 360 drive chipsets or only hitachi. In this case if he has benq or samsung can i just note down the driver number on the label and buy one of those replacement drivers and then attach his old driver chipset?

Need Help!! I had the same issue with my Toshiba drive. Only when I put my card in the new drive it wont open the drive or anything. The dashboard comes up but thats it. same result on both drives. If I use the card from the replacement drie it works except of course it doesnt recognise the disk as an 360 game just a dvd. So thats workin. Any ideas or some direction from anyone PLEASE!!!

Btw that "Hardware" that you took out has the dvd-roms Key and all that on it.
all you gotta do is flash the firmware to get the key and put it on any drive you want.

the reason to replace the card in new drive with the old one, Obviously, is so that your xbox doesnt reject it and More importantly,
if your old drive was modded to play backups, then you can just use the old card and save urself a lotta hard work of modding ur new drive.

i have the BENQ drive. Can i just buy a whole new BENQ drive and install it and throw the old drive out?

Im getting the one red light but I think its coming from my drive.
When I opened it up there is a clear hard liquid on a part of the board and it looks like it has been melted there, Anyone have any idea what this is?

Can someone please help me, When i put a disc in my xbox and close the tray it will just keep saying "open tray" i open and close it, it will say the same thing, it wont even ATTEMPT to read it, before i would just eject it 2 or 3 times and it will eventually play it, it does this with all my games so WTF is the problem?????????

Theres a way to prevent this.
1, dont smoke around your xbox
2,ceep it low to the ground, where dust is not at (not carpet! thats where most of the dust is!)
and it well last untill it rrod's :P

this works on all xbox 360s, just make sure you buy the right replacement drive, you can find them all on ebay, don't buy the cheapest one either. only do this guys method if you are not capable of flashing the firmware on a new drive, this is a good way to fuck up your brand new drive.

I did this and my disc drive still doesn't work so i think my disc disc drive board is bad when i put the board back into the one i bought off of ebay makes a loud grinding noise but it reads the disc and it says put this dvd into a xbox 360 console when i put a game in what do i do?

my xbox was flashed and was working but was not reading certain disks, freezing n making funky noises......i managed to replace the whole drive whilst keeping the main circutboard. but my xbox hasnt changed, all the new hardware didn't change a thing! i have tried the same disks on other xboxes and they work perfectly.
what other components on the 360 still might be duff?

i bought a new drive, opened it, the card was different from my xbox's card, i am pissed, and i typed in the model number of the origional drive in amazon and got that as a reaplacement (it looks like urs, but the boards arent the same)

Wow, i can plainly see i did this wrong as my card still has that blue ribbon cable with the guard on it... probably should have watched this first. My xbox has had problems for about 4 months now and i finally (through my cleaning the laser) broke it. I looked inside and found that there was a bubble in the laser. fun.

One thing you should do before you try to replace the board on a DVD drive is get the DVD key from the firmware (on the faulty drive, so long as it still works to some extent)
If the board fails.. you're screwed for life.. but if you have the DVD key saved you can get any of the 3 types of drives for the 360 and use your DVD key on that drive.
Just do a google for DVD key flashing

lol mine started to work the next day by itself I guess it was just dust because I cleared up the dust and it works I didnt have to open my 360 or anything just opened it and cleared up all the dust

just take the chip from your old disk drive and replace it on the new one and just remember to buy a disk drive that's the same as the one u have

I did everything you did, brand new drive, replaced the chip, and the only improvement is that when I a disc is in it startd reading it but the laser turns off and on, its like its struggling to read it, Do you think I mind to cslibrate the laser?

yea.. i definately have a philips and it doesnt have any ribon wires.. i bought it brand new and instead of ribon wires, theyre soldered wires to the card.. any help there? and the damn middle piece wont spin too freely either lol

i was actually opening and shutting the disc tray for about 35 mins.. and he told me to tap on the vent right next to the hard drive when the discwhen its going back in.. and it actually worked first try... but a ghetto way to do it tho lol

hey just wondering- my xbox is running the hitachi drive so this video is relevant and will work no worries- but i was offering to fix a mates and im not sure untill i see his xbox what drive it has but my question is, is that disk drive model #GDR-3120L work with any of the xbox 360 drive chipsets or only hitachi. In this case if he has benq or samsung can i just note down the driver number on the label and buy one of those replacement drivers and then attach his old driver chipset?

Need Help!! I had the same issue with my Toshiba drive. Only when I put my card in the new drive it wont open the drive or anything. The dashboard comes up but thats it. same result on both drives. If I use the card from the replacement drie it works except of course it doesnt recognise the disk as an 360 game just a dvd. So thats workin. Any ideas or some direction from anyone PLEASE!!!
