the song is well known in Ireland and frequently sung, but I would think it originated in the US sometime after the civil war

The Paul Brady version is wonderful and I like the upbeat creole version by Martin Simpson (both available on YouTube).

How about something in a dropped D tuning. Good for blues and Irish stuff.
