prius is the first hybrid car and needs a lot of work to make a good result but its the start of a new era!
I believe that if we make a car with only electric motor+good reliable batteries and charge them from a electric power plant the efficiency is much better!
The only problem is that the (Li-ion) batteries are heavy and there is a safety issue with some explosions from overheat...
That PROVES NOTHING!! Im Sure the BMW HAS A LARGER GAS TANK!!! IT CAN HOLD LOTS OF GAS COMPARED TO A PRIUS!! PLUS ITS COSTS AN ARM AND A LEG TO FILL UP!!!
Actually, the Prius does very well in highway, I get 71.8mpg and not so well in city, I got 55.2mpg. Stops just kill the fuel efficiency.
Tou do well the Prius must be at a constant speed, with no stop lights. Also, that battery pack is heavy, I think that once Lithium ion comes out it will be the winner.
screw hybrids...buy a diesel...and what would you like to drive..that plastic washing machine on wheels...or a quality build saloon by BMW?..and still get better economy..TAKE THAT U JAPANESE SEAWEED EATERS!!GERMANY BEATEN YOU
very interesting video. only thing is the price range and it also shows that if there was a disel hybrid it might do even better. plus i believe the guy was right in stateing that if they went the "scenic" route the prius will be on top and it would have showed the difference in stop and go traffic. people should drive their cars according to their driving habbits.
Not sure where you live, but you cannot get a diesel hybrid in America, so unfortunately it is the best solution at the time for us. My dad had a Jetta TDI that was awesome, but Diesel is more costly here, and the actual emissions are higher even on a clean diesel car. [The BMW would be so much more fun to drive though. :P]
I didn't see much urban driving, they've picked an inter city route, favouring the BMW's diesel (not 5 litre petrol) engine, over the hybrid's petrol engine, it's electric engine won't have got much use. Diesel's more energy dense than petrol, giving more kilometres per litre, you still emit the same amount of carbon per kilometre, for a given engine power output though. If they'd spent the time driving an urban route the Prius would've used much less fuel, AND emitted much less carbon.
49 diesel vs 41 petrol. Petrol burn energy 35MJ, vs 41MJ for diesel.
BMW energy consumption: 49*41=2009 Megajoule
Prius energy consumption: 41*35=1435 Megajoule
As you see, even in a situation favouring the BMW the prius is far more energy efficient. If the test would take place in a city, the difference would be huge.
Not the most scientific of tests, you compared a Diesel BMW with a Petrol Hybrid not exactly the fairest of tests. Should of compared a Petrol BMW with a Petrol Hybrid not to mention both men could of had radically diffrent driving styles
Just finished a report on hybrids. Not yet value for money in the UK unless travelling in and out of the London congestion charge zone on a daily basis. If you are, it is possible to save over £18,000 within 10 years ith a toyota prius! If the government incentified hybrid drivers outside the capital the the UK could drastically reduce its co2 emissions
dont know why the hell poland want to come over here when we get taxed on the belive of global warming being the responsibilty of us in england we should all stop using a certain supermarket or petrol station for one month that way we could get big business to act for us
Well Hybrids do best ONLY in stop and go traffic...

wow very unexpected. but let's face it, both cars get amazing gas milage!

deisel is a 10% more energy dense fuel. So the prius actually used less energy. It also cost more per litre. Not a clever test

IF THE FAT GUY WEIGHED ABOUT 100 or MORE POUNDS LESS THE PRIUS WOULD HAVE DID BETTER!!!"With Fuel Economy" PLUS BMW HAS A LARGER GAS TANK!!

Diesel is more expensive but it burns much slower so its a bit cheaper in the long run. Either way you have to admire the BMWs engine.

The BMW is ungodly pricy compared to the prius... It also uses more expensive fuel.
Plus the fat guy was in the prius.

LOL that was good. I guess it makes the difference of those 2 liters driving over 500 miles doesn't it.

i like both

what does this prove, that a car thats upwards of 50,000 has better gas mileage than a car that is 22000?

Well, that BMW had a diesel engine, I bet that a diesel hybrid Prius would put that Bimmer to shame. Unfair to test diesel vs gasoline any day.

Diesels get better mileage than cars that run on gasoline! This is undoubtedly the news of the century.

it's good that the BMW did so well, but there is no way i would ever buy one with only a 4-cylinder engine.

True. But good on the BMW Always like to see a good solution. [I drive a Prius] but I live in America where diesels are a rarity.

whats the size of fuel tanks?
whats the relative emissions?
and shouldn't you be testing the pious against a petrol bm? toyota dont actually sell it on fuel consumption, they sell it on low emissions.
speaking of which, must take the Cerbera out for a spin LOL!

It's realy a shame diesel cars are not available in the US.
