It's all about antenna setup. the laptops had internal low dbi antenna. The solution would be to buy a wireless N pcmcia card for the laptop with a plug for an external antenna. Also most routers come with little 3dbi rubber ducky antenna. go buy an 8dbi omni antenna for every wireless device. also facing the antenna so that the rods are aligned so that both are parallel with each other will give you a much greater boost in signal resulting in more throughput.
Ah yes, good old RF issues and useless support from mostly foreign made products. As a commercial wireless network architect, I feel your pain. $100 WAP's rarely get the job done.
may be it is the default configuration to use b/g ... and not n...

Terrible tech support. Hardware is tested first... ALWAYS.

Dumb thing: in the wireless prefs, did you select the highest performance and not the one that is normally selected (which is slower)

Distance from the router to the laptop can affect speed. The max speed is measured right next to the router.
Y0uTuben 3 years ago
he did measure it next to the router and only got 30mb/sec when they advertise 300mb/sec.
same thing with my ambit and lynksys routers. they're all crap.
