here's an american vote for the most consequential & dramatic goal of all time. think of all the corruption and emotion team canada faced here. they were the legitimate favorites in vancouver, so although sid's golden goal was exciting, henderson's came against a rigged system that was happy to rig the entire thing for propaganda. '72 was the biggest and best, and remains AWESOME.
Oh wow the Russians cheated, what a shock. What would the result be for the 8 games IF the Canadians showed up in shape and with proper pre scouting and Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull in the lineup.

This was World War III. You will never see a sporting event like this again. The geopolitical atmosphere at the time created a true hatred beyond your typical sports rivalry.
and lol you're the guy who recorded that video 10 seconds before crosby scored the golden goal. Funny i just watched that video earlier today lmao. COINCIDENCE?!?
@socalero u dont fucking know ur history, russia has 16 and canada has 24 dumbfuck. And btw...juiors do count dumbfuck, its just the world cup of hockey that doesnt, ignorant dicknose...how can it be ur game, if u dont have passion for it? And btw, ur team going to the olympics is not good at all...ignorant piece of shit
I just wish Bobby Hull could have played in this series. Canada did not need him but still...his slap shot was awesome. Even if it didn't go in, Canada would have burried the rebounds.
russian has began its rule in international play again how long would they last, they beat canada twice in the world championship 2 stright years and they have a great team going in the the olympics in 2010. Who wills stop them before its too late.
@seronic yea thats true i am canadian so im proud that canada won but i dont mind seeing a great team like russia who has good hockey history in the making after 2 wins in a row against canada and then maybe if they had won the olympics this year this might kick of there rule over hockey. So i want your opinion why russia lost?
Russia didn't show up. They weren't ready for the physical game that Canada brought. If they would have adjusted to it -- it would have been a different game. Goalies don't help either.. If your goalie shows up (any team), you have a great chance to win. Granted, he had no chance on a lot of those shots. Canada VS Russia hockey is always different than any other teams playing. Canada ups their game for it. World championship we lost, but completly outplayed them (Hot goalie won). ;)
@seronic Well i think they did not put on a good enough roster maybe, like i think Yashin could of done well or even Zubov, he has been great for dallas stars when he was with Dallas. Now if Khabibulin did not get injured i think it could of been a different story
@goLEAFSgotc17 - check the line-ups out; this is not the same exact team! There are only 6 players who played on both teams. And it was only one game! If they played 20 more games, I don't think the Americans would have got another win!
Not a miracle on ice. This was Canada's best againsts Russia's best. This was a hard fought series, and just snuck out with a win. The reason the american one was a miracle is because it wasn't their pro's playing. (Why do you think Canada boycotted winter olympics (hockey) 2 times in a row after this? ~
@hockeyman134 , this was no miracle for Canada, the Canucks were expected to murder the Russians. The fact Russia showed the world that they played the game at such a high level made 72 Russia's miracle on ice if u wanna call it that.
I'm an American born in 1977 and I got fired up watching this video. When Henderson scored, I thought to myself "Suck on that, you Communist bastards!"
I wonder what would've happened if the guards had taken Eagleson completely out of the building. There are all sorts of possibilities, all of them probably quite unfriendly.
This series was so crazy~ Both teams were EXTREMELY dirty. Canada was dirty as fuck, and soviets were dirty as fuck. It's to bad I wasn't around to see it -- would have been great.
Far be it from me to defend Clarke; yes, it was a dirty move, but all I am saying is that he made no move to hide his dirtiness, unlike the Russians who were consistently sneaky about the spears and slashes they committed, and probably still profess innocence about them.
Yep, Espo's leadership was outstanding as well as inspiring, both on and off the ice. No question about that. Henderson, too, rose to the top with the goals he scored. Pity Harold Ballard didn't give him any respect.
@WpgLwr007 yes ..no doubt about it..Espo really stepped up in this series (especially in the absence of Orr and Hull) this series was probably his best hockey period...and a great example to the next generation of players in the 80's who (except for 81) would also put the boots to the Red Army (lol but it was never easy)
...with telephone calls in the middle of the night, telling the Canadians they couldn't being their wives to Moscow, "misplacing" the food and beer the Canadians brought with them -- all designed to intimidate the team off the ice.
Face facts -- the Russians were ALWAYS pro calibre players, even in the Olympics (and not only in hockey either); they just didn't have a pro-type mechanism (playing for cash) as the West understood it, so they could make the claim that their players were amateurs.
Sure, what Clarke did could be considered unsportsmanlike, but it was no more unsportsmanlike than the Russians constantly jabbing and spearing the Canadian players in all games. The only difference is that Clarke was so obvious in what he did, while the Russians at least had enough finesse to hide what they were doing.
Let's not forget all the cheating the Russians tried to do off the ice -- trying to substitute referees at the last minute, psychological warfare against Team Canada...
Sorry WpgLwr007, in attempting to defend Clarke, like Kharlamov, you have no leg to stand on. Please...don't even go there. This series was Esposito's finest hour. Le Leader he definitely was.
russia is better, who won gold medal/??, russia won gold medal for like 40 yrs in a row haahha, usa got lucky in 1980, russia won 5 times b4 that and 5 times after that, domination
the olympics wouldnt allow the pros who play in the nhl to play, so thats why they had the summit series so the best players of both nations could play each other.
wow ur such a rookie, russia was never pro either, they were all in the army and had to serve military duty, i seen a documentary and while america and canada had the best facilities and every1 catered to them, the russians had to search the ground for bread and were poor as fuck
Russians tried to cheat in the final game but it was Clarke who purposely injured the Russians best player earlier in the series taking him out of the series... think about it.
They cheated in every game that was in Russia, not just the last game. They tried to stab Bergman out of the series and they failed, they even tried to wrap their stick around Espo's neck to get him out of the slot and they failed. They wanted to choose the refs and leave Canada out of that and yet they still lost.
So, why isn't Paul Henderson in the Hockey Hall of Fame? Also, where were YOU when he score the winning goal? Russia cheated, intimidated, and still got their butts kicked. Da, Da, Canada. Nyet,Nyet, Soviet.
there ya go boys and girls. Canada 72 was simply the greatest team ever assembled. and no Orr, imagine the possibilities. Gawd its awesome to be Canadian and own the hockey world.
Commentators believed that constant slashing of Kharlamov was in order to neutralize his goal scoring threat. Years later, John Ferguson, Sr., an assistant coach with Team Canada, was quoted as saying "I called Clarke over to the bench, looked over at Kharlamov and said, 'I think he needs a tap on the ankle.' I didn't think twice about it. It was Us versus Them. And Kharlamov was killing us. I mean, somebody had to do it."
Please purchase my book on the very beginnings of the Soviet Hockey Dynasty. Please. I think that you will enjoy it. It is entitled: MAGICIANS ON ICE.
In game six of the fiercely fought series, Canada's Bobby Clarke, of the Philadelphia Flyers, slashed Kharlamov on his left ankle, causing a fracture. Although Kharlamov bravely continued in game six, he was unable to play in game seven and was ineffective in the final game. Some observers say that this injury was a crucial incident which turned the tide of the series in Canada's favour as they entered it three games to one in the series.
The series turned in Canada's favor in game 6 when assistant coach Joe Ferguson deliberately ordered the slashing of Kharlamov by Bobby Clarke. That crippled the USSR. Kharlamov was the best player in the world, and he was just killing the Canadians. His slashing was one of the most deplorable moments in the history of sports. In my opinion, the Canadians cheated to win, and could barley do that!
In your opinion Canada cheated? Hockey is a violent sport, slash here, slash there, big deal, I think its great they took out Kharlamov, shows our countries passion for the sport. If you don't like it, go back to the baseball field yank.
Your team cheated, and in an act of deplorable desperation, took out the best player in the world. Bottom line: Canada cheated to win. That is shameful. The Soviets were the best!
You gave me a good laugh. In a way, it only made it fair. Did you forget that Bobby Orr probably the greatest player in that time, didnt play the whole series? If he did, I think Canada would have win the series more easily than they did.
Bobby Orr was slightly over rated. The Montreal Canadiens proved that practically everytime they went up against the Bruins. This was especially true with regard to the playoffs. Bottom line: The Soviets had the greatest dynasty in the history of hockey, with the Montreal Canadiens a close second.
Hey, "please buy my hockey book" guy...A guy named Jean Beliveau also happened to write a book you might want to read sometime...He devoted a whole chapter to a guy named Bobby Orr...In a book about JEAN BELIVEAU...Besides holding Beliveau's opinion over "who are you again?", I'd seen Orr play on a few occasions and I can assure you he was definitely not overrated. Saw Kharlamov 2nd game in 72 at the Gardens...Looked like Cournoyer.
with montreal canadiens as a second?hahahaha, well there is no such thing as Dynasty in Soviet Hockey PERIOD.and you dare to say that Montreal Canadiens are as a second??hahaahaha,,man its like saying cochroaches taste better than apples.i dont mean that they were cockroaches but the comparison is ABSOLUTELY INSANE.
Everyone in Canada will agree with you that Bobby Clarke is a douchebag and didn't deserve to be on that Canadian team. But if you claim that the Soviet Union couldn't win without their star player, then they're not really the best, are they? Canada won the Summit Series in the end, get over yourself.
Canada cheated to win. Their victory was hollow. Even Eagleson said prior to the series, "Anything short of an eight game sweep will be a defeat for us" Using his own words, Canada lost several times over!
omg come the fuck on you retarded piece of trash, i cant even debate that its so pathetic.. id like to smash your fucking face in with my fist, anytime buddy
I wish you had never been born. You should have been aborted with a coat hanger. Your life is meaningless. You should commit suicide. Your life has never, does not matter, and will never matter, even if you live to be 100. Do everyone a favor and commit suicide. Please commit suicide. You don't matter. You are less than nothing. Nobody would have cared if you had never been born. You don't matter. Please commit suicide. You are a living argument for birth control.
almost 36 years later, and people like you are still crying over it. But hey, if you want to see a crushing defeat, google the Canada-Russia Super Series (Tertiak's genius idea which saw Russia go 0-7-1 against Canada).
The correct spelling is Tretiak. Those Russian players were no where near the calibre of those of the Soviet era. Deep down, in places you don't dare talk about, you know that to be true. You see, all of Russia's best were drafted by NHL teams. Why do you think this is?? Hmn..... Could it be becasue they are the best hockey players in the world. Far better to those of Canada!
2005: 105 Canadians drafted, 11 Russians drafted, and the trend goes on...
I'm agreeing with you that Soviet hockey was very good, but not "far better than Canada" as you put it. Also, congratulations on the 2008 IIHF World Championship Gold, team Russia deserved it.
You are a good and decent person. You know a great deal about hockey. however, in the 1970's, the NHL was more than eager to draft all of the Soviet players. In fact, Tretiak was drafted by the Canadiens, my favorite NHL team, in 1983, and they begged the Soviets to let him go. Unfortunately they didn't. Had the Habs had him in goal, they would have dominated the NHL in the 1980's like they did in the 1970's.
Oh my lord get over it you baby, and stop crying. Canada won Russia lost end of story, and no matter how much you whine, complain, gripe, and cry, nothing is going to change.
SWALE1984 , Canada didnt cheap, u comies did, by fixing the officials, because u know u cant beat Canada fairly, ignorant fuck, and if russia is better than Canada why is there over 45% more Canadians in the NHL than russians? we run your shit, go invade some country communist
russians only started coming to the league in the early 90s late 80s cuys they werent allowed to defect, and the nhl is a north american league, russia has its own hockey league and those teams can compete with the nhl and beat them, why would they want to leave their home country to come play in the nhl, the nhl pays much less and the russian league is tax free, ur an ignorant canadian pussy who is mad cus russians are beter than any canadian who just dumps the puck and chases it, no skill haha
well the Juniors are coming up, i guess we will see who is the better country at hockey...and yea u russians do have dangles, but u guys dont have any strength or hitting ability, which does matter, but u wouldnt understand, your a communist
juniors?? hahaha, fuck does 17 yr olds have to do with whos the better country//???, russia just beat canada in the world cup, and canada is the most pussiest country in the world, ur all dumb lumberjacks hahaha, fuck canada , they have nothing and are trying their hardest to have hockey, and they fail at that too ahahahah, buncha trees who dumo the puck
shut up both of you, Canada did break rules in the series aswell, Bobby Clarke was INSTRUCTED to injure the Russians' best player. Also the Russian elite teams pay much worse than the NHL and cannot compete with them, iDuff told a blatant lie. But it is true that the number of Russians in the NHL is still affected today by the emmigration laws formerly imposed by the Russian "government". Ultimately though, Canada is the better hockey nation.
World cup doesn't count. No team has their best there. Only the Olympics count -- and World juniors. World juniors is everyones best representing their countries (With the exception of injuries, or those already in the NHL or equal league). World championship is just the countries players who couldn't make the playoffs in the NHL (And other leagues I'm assuming). But, I love the world championship anyway ;).
@seronic - World Cup counts! The World Cup is what the Canada Cup became. You're thinking of the "World Championships". This doesn't count as best on best; it takes place during the NHL play-offs, All the best players for each country are absent.
@soncalero - wtf?! IIHF world cup? No such thing; it's called the IIHF "World Championships", and it doesn't count; it tkaes place during the NHL play-offs. I think you mean the NHLPA "World Cup".
Yes the movie is Canada - Russia. It is awsome. Buy it on line.

Who wills stop them before its too late.
okpapereat 2 years ago
Canada stopped them. :)
seronic 1 year ago
@seronic yea thats true i am canadian so im proud that canada won but i dont mind seeing a great team like russia who has good hockey history in the making after 2 wins in a row against canada and then maybe if they had won the olympics this year this might kick of there rule over hockey. So i want your opinion why russia lost?
okpapereat 1 year ago
Russia didn't show up. They weren't ready for the physical game that Canada brought. If they would have adjusted to it -- it would have been a different game. Goalies don't help either.. If your goalie shows up (any team), you have a great chance to win. Granted, he had no chance on a lot of those shots. Canada VS Russia hockey is always different than any other teams playing. Canada ups their game for it. World championship we lost, but completly outplayed them (Hot goalie won). ;)
seronic 1 year ago
@seronic Well i think they did not put on a good enough roster maybe, like i think Yashin could of done well or even Zubov, he has been great for dallas stars when he was with Dallas. Now if Khabibulin did not get injured i think it could of been a different story

nooooot even close!
this is the same exact soviet team that team USA beat and they were a bunch of college kids
last time i checked this team canada had 16 future hall of famers! no where near the same accomplichment
goLEAFSgotc17 2 years ago
america beat them 8 years later but that was only one game which they had a hot goalie, that game had nowhere the intensity of this series.
theman1819 2 years ago 2
@goLEAFSgotc17 - check the line-ups out; this is not the same exact team! There are only 6 players who played on both teams. And it was only one game! If they played 20 more games, I don't think the Americans would have got another win!
grimdetermination 1 year ago
Not a miracle on ice. This was Canada's best againsts Russia's best. This was a hard fought series, and just snuck out with a win. The reason the american one was a miracle is because it wasn't their pro's playing. (Why do you think Canada boycotted winter olympics (hockey) 2 times in a row after this? ~
seronic 1 year ago
@seronic - this wasn't Canada's best; no Bobby Orr or Bobby Hull.

This series was so crazy~ Both teams were EXTREMELY dirty. Canada was dirty as fuck, and soviets were dirty as fuck. It's to bad I wasn't around to see it -- would have been great.
seronic 2 years ago
Far be it from me to defend Clarke; yes, it was a dirty move, but all I am saying is that he made no move to hide his dirtiness, unlike the Russians who were consistently sneaky about the spears and slashes they committed, and probably still profess innocence about them.
Yep, Espo's leadership was outstanding as well as inspiring, both on and off the ice. No question about that. Henderson, too, rose to the top with the goals he scored. Pity Harold Ballard didn't give him any respect.
WpgLwr007 2 years ago

WpgLwr007 2 years ago
Sure, what Clarke did could be considered unsportsmanlike, but it was no more unsportsmanlike than the Russians constantly jabbing and spearing the Canadian players in all games. The only difference is that Clarke was so obvious in what he did, while the Russians at least had enough finesse to hide what they were doing.
Let's not forget all the cheating the Russians tried to do off the ice -- trying to substitute referees at the last minute, psychological warfare against Team Canada...
WpgLwr007 2 years ago
Sorry WpgLwr007, in attempting to defend Clarke, like Kharlamov, you have no leg to stand on. Please...don't even go there. This series was Esposito's finest hour. Le Leader he definitely was.

They cheated in every game that was in Russia, not just the last game.
Mirinko11 3 years ago
Please purchase my book on the very beginnings of the Soviet Hockey Dynasty. Please. I think that you will enjoy it. It is entitled: MAGICIANS ON ICE.
SWALE1984 3 years ago
In game six of the fiercely fought series, Canada's Bobby Clarke, of the Philadelphia Flyers, slashed Kharlamov on his left ankle, causing a fracture. Although Kharlamov bravely continued in game six, he was unable to play in game seven and was ineffective in the final game. Some observers say that this injury was a crucial incident which turned the tide of the series in Canada's favour as they entered it three games to one in the series.

Mirinko11 3 years ago
YEAH KAPITALISTS!! BURN HUMILIATION
skullrimer 3 years ago
The series turned in Canada's favor in game 6 when assistant coach Joe Ferguson deliberately ordered the slashing of Kharlamov by Bobby Clarke. That crippled the USSR. Kharlamov was the best player in the world, and he was just killing the Canadians. His slashing was one of the most deplorable moments in the history of sports. In my opinion, the Canadians cheated to win, and could barley do that!
SWALE1984 3 years ago
In your opinion Canada cheated? Hockey is a violent sport, slash here, slash there, big deal, I think its great they took out Kharlamov, shows our countries passion for the sport. If you don't like it, go back to the baseball field yank.
Jyrki51 3 years ago 3
Your team cheated, and in an act of deplorable desperation, took out the best player in the world. Bottom line: Canada cheated to win. That is shameful. The Soviets were the best!
SWALE1984 3 years ago
You gave me a good laugh. In a way, it only made it fair. Did you forget that Bobby Orr probably the greatest player in that time, didnt play the whole series? If he did, I think Canada would have win the series more easily than they did.
vene777 3 years ago
Bobby Orr was slightly over rated. The Montreal Canadiens proved that practically everytime they went up against the Bruins. This was especially true with regard to the playoffs. Bottom line: The Soviets had the greatest dynasty in the history of hockey, with the Montreal Canadiens a close second.
SWALE1984 3 years ago
Hey, "please buy my hockey book" guy...A guy named Jean Beliveau also happened to write a book you might want to read sometime...He devoted a whole chapter to a guy named Bobby Orr...In a book about JEAN BELIVEAU...Besides holding Beliveau's opinion over "who are you again?", I'd seen Orr play on a few occasions and I can assure you he was definitely not overrated. Saw Kharlamov 2nd game in 72 at the Gardens...Looked like Cournoyer.

Even Eagleson said prior to the series, "Anything short of an eight game sweep will be a defeat for us" Using his own words, Canada lost several times over!

almost 36 years later, and people like you are still crying over it. But hey, if you want to see a crushing defeat, google the Canada-Russia Super Series (Tertiak's genius idea which saw Russia go 0-7-1 against Canada).
okk 3 years ago
The correct spelling is Tretiak. Those Russian players were no where near the calibre of those of the Soviet era. Deep down, in places you don't dare talk about, you know that to be true. You see, all of Russia's best were drafted by NHL teams. Why do you think this is?? Hmn..... Could it be becasue they are the best hockey players in the world. Far better to those of Canada!
SWALE1984 3 years ago
Well, since you want to talk about NHL drafts..
2007: 102 Canadians drafted, 9 Russians drafted
2006: 84 Canadians drafted, 15 Russians drafted
2005: 105 Canadians drafted, 11 Russians drafted, and the trend goes on...
I'm agreeing with you that Soviet hockey was very good, but not "far better than Canada" as you put it. Also, congratulations on the 2008 IIHF World Championship Gold, team Russia deserved it.
okk 3 years ago
You are a good and decent person. You know a great deal about hockey. however, in the 1970's, the NHL was more than eager to draft all of the Soviet players. In fact, Tretiak was drafted by the Canadiens, my favorite NHL team, in 1983, and they begged the Soviets to let him go. Unfortunately they didn't. Had the Habs had him in goal, they would have dominated the NHL in the 1980's like they did in the 1970's.

shut up both of you, Canada did break rules in the series aswell, Bobby Clarke was INSTRUCTED to injure the Russians' best player. Also the Russian elite teams pay much worse than the NHL and cannot compete with them, iDuff told a blatant lie. But it is true that the number of Russians in the NHL is still affected today by the emmigration laws formerly imposed by the Russian "government". Ultimately though, Canada is the better hockey nation.

juniors ? juniors dont mean shit...they aint pros yet bro...its olympics and iihf world cup what counts...
soncalero 2 years ago
World cup doesn't count. No team has their best there. Only the Olympics count -- and World juniors. World juniors is everyones best representing their countries (With the exception of injuries, or those already in the NHL or equal league). World championship is just the countries players who couldn't make the playoffs in the NHL (And other leagues I'm assuming). But, I love the world championship anyway ;).
seronic 1 year ago
@seronic - World Cup counts! The World Cup is what the Canada Cup became. You're thinking of the "World Championships". This doesn't count as best on best; it takes place during the NHL play-offs, All the best players for each country are absent.

@soncalero - wtf?! IIHF world cup? No such thing; it's called the IIHF "World Championships", and it doesn't count; it tkaes place during the NHL play-offs. I think you mean the NHLPA "World Cup".
