Ahhhh, those were the days!!! even after all these yrs. that solo still blows me away. One thing about ace. When it comes to the big stage you can count on him to be on his "A-CE" game.
No matter how far I've gotten into my guitar playing, I never EVER forget to play this sacred musical piece particularly Ace's main riff which sounds so friggin sick.
what a great show tms must have been such a variety of great bands, we did get to see it a bit down here in australia but i dont remember seeing this one. saw kiss live in 1980 and still have ticket stub but lost interest in the band when ace left. When i started learning guitar years later i regained interest again as i wanted to learn all the old kiss tunes. but i do think think this video shows the band at its best, young, raw and hungry. Their first 3 albums were classics, thanks 4 the vid
imagine writing this song.Have you ever heard anything like it?Kiss wrote some great tunes. The lead fits perfectly.Thats why they are famous.and we are not. They were surely ahead of their time. Thanks KISS for the memories!I'll never forget!
The instumental they play at the end of she is originaly from let me know which is on the first album then it leads in to Ace's solo. I really hate being born in 87 because i would love to of seen kiss live when they first started touring. Ace is a legend and he might not be the best technical guitarist in the world, but he can make that les paul sing. You just watch this video and you can see they are all having fun. KISS are Forever
I looked up The Midnight Special on Wikipedia, then looked up Kiss on 1975 on the show, and it says they played Black Diamond :/ But they play "She" and some other part after that.
just wanted to say for the record. Any one who says Peter is not the best drummer in KISS history can fuck off. Ace is the best guitarist. Gene is the best bassist, Paul is the best vocalist. together they are MAGIK.. and this tune is trance music. long live the 4 horesman of rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Thill029 ... Yeah I Also thought Pearl Jam's 'Alive' Guitar solo was a rip-off of Ace's... But then I Heard 'Five To One' by The Doors, recorded in 1968!... Check it and then tell me who's ripping off who! (Even the drum intro reminded me of a very well-know Ace song...) Check for yourself, add: /watch?v=lQrAULjiysk
@swans1997 Jimmie Webster made recordings in the 1950s using the method of two-handed tapping he described in 'Touch Method for Electric and Amplified Spanish Guitar', published in 1952.[1] Webster was a student of electric pickup designer Harry DeArmond, who developed two-handed tapping as a way to demonstrate the sensitivity of his pickups. The two-handed tapping technique was also known and occasionally used by many 1950s and 1960s jazz guitarists.
@Sbrownlee Interesting about Webster and I knew it was older than EVH or even Hackett, classical gutarists and jazz I knew and I think there will be more to be found, but ,as far as the 70's rock, where EVH gets practically ALL the credit for coming up with it, Hacket was doing it before, but with his plectrum really. EVH employed it more whereas Hackett didn't have the idea it would even be a big deal for guitar nuts . Mainly my response was more to the EVH afficionandos.
@swans1997 I grew up in the L.A. area and have worked in the music industry as a promoter and manager for over 30 years (no old man jokes please lol). I was seeing Van Halen back when they were still called Mammoth. I was also around and knew all the Dokken guys back n the 70s befor theyw ere Dokken. George Lynch of Dokken taught Eddie the tappng technique. Eddie just got noticed first. Personally, I'll tack Hackett over EVH anyday.
@Sbrownlee That's all good and well but I hated the L.A. hairband scene, really. I can't think of much nice things to say about the music. All due respect to your career in the industry, but, yuck.
@swans1997 The bands I signed or promoted in LA agree, bar a hand full, were pure knowing the market and what the people wanted. Very few LA band relied on talent, but mage what was selling Personally, I'm more itnto Euro metal bands (Maiden, Priest, Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc.) and prog rock (PFM, Banco, Gong, Gentle Giant, Ragnarok, etc.) One exception in L.A. is a band I manage, Joshua Perahia (try the video for Let Your Love Shinedown) tell me w/ you think. Aint no hairspray band for sure
@romeokid69 oh ok now less we forget Randy Resnick Terry Cath and Harvey Mandel and nowere did i say that EVH or Ace Invented tapping. But pal if you think Beck did UMMMMMMMMMM go do your homework as you say . It was around way befor even Beck used it ! and if you read some of EVH bio he mentions how he liked Pages technique in heartbreaker and also gave Resnick a plug in his book!!! Thanks
@guitarrox I NEVER said Beck INVENTED it. I said they got it from watching Jeff Beck DO IT!!!!!!! I know it was being done long before that and I NEVER claimed I knew the people responsible. While I agree with your assesment about Jimmy Page influencing both of them, both Ace and Eddie have admitted in interviews that their interest in tapping CAME FROM JEFF BECK!!!!! Please read my post correctly before responding to it.
@guitarrox And by the way, his name is Terry Kath, not Cath. If you are going to praise, who in my opinion, was the unsung HERO of electric guitar (quote from Hendrix, so you know it's legit), at least spell the man's name right. Kath and Hendrix are the lead guitarists in Heaven's house band because all the other lead players up there suck in comparison.
@romeokid69 oops spell check sorry Terry!!! Least we can agree who the gods of guitar are !!! Hendrix yes is my all time fav !!! I like your knowledge / rox
@salamonetalton holy shit!!!...i am 42 and been playing guitar since i was 13...EVH is my guitar god... and had no idea anybody but him was tapping b4 78...wow blown away...well....another reason kiss aint kiss without ace
@salamonetalton Close, but no. Eddie got his tapping from Steve Hackett of Genesis. Steve was doing it way back in 1971 on the Classic Genesis album "Nursery Crime." Listen to the intro of the song "The Return of the Giant Hogweed." Genesis (with Peter Gabriel) were light years ahead of their time.
@racer500gp Ace,, i believe got it from page!, heartbreaker is from 69, and also the solo at the end of immigrant song in 70! page incorporated a solo to that song on that tour!!! eddie van halen said the same too!!
@salamonetalton No. Classical guitarists have done it forever. Also, Steve Hackett used it a lot in early Genesis. He didn't do it to hotdog, though - it was incorporated into the music. See the live version of "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight," on YouTube - at the 3 minute mark he taps a bit, then more at about 4 mins (he is only shown doing it at 4 mins).
Ace Frehley's big influences was Jeff Beck. He was amazed when he saw him play!!!! Ace is one of the best rock guitar players. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves for what he's done!!!!
@redhead5150 Yeah cause he is over shined and under appreciated by the two other talentless hacks who only care about money and selling rubber ducks in KISS makeup. instead of having Ace do his thing they rather play with there road manager as Ace.

@drmonty79 Interesting point. I think the same can be said for Aerosmiths first 5, Bad Co.'s first five, Sabbath's first 5, all of Van Halen's with Dave, etc...that's when all those guys were young and hungry.
ace is my all time fav guitarist and i DONT think hes the "best" ever i just love his style and sound he uses all 4 blues scales and is a hard rock blues guitarist
Gene Simmons help Van Halen get a record deal. Eddie picked up the finger tapping from Ace Frehley. I thought Ace had started the finger tapping. Who did, if the Spaceman didn't.
space ace rules, but I always noticed that throughout his days with kiss, he simply regurgetated the same solos and trademark techniques. Had he improvised more, he would have been over the top. I still love him and say he is one of rocks most influential wailers.
everyone who is a true KISS fan should shout from th top to bottom of their lungs to Mr. Simmons and Mr. Stanley, that they need to stop acting like used tampons and end the group, With a little integrity
not gonna happen. in fact, Kiss will probably live on after simmons and stanley leave the group. simmons and stanley have a brilliant concept: the players can be replaced. thanks for showing us that you aren't a true fan.
Hi there, You mentioned that Ace was not the first to do any "finger tapping" and you need to go back futher. Ok. EV was doing it in back in 1976-77. Ace was doing it back in 1974. Ritchie Blackmore was doing it back in 1969-70. Whom would you be referring to?
actually my grandmothers panties caught fire from this gig and she sued kiss for damages including a box of tampons and a years supply of depends.tru!!!!!
A little history for all you good folks out there. Watch ace's solo at 5:51. The pick tapping technique was not really know. People tend to think eddie vanhalen started that. Eddie's awesome but this was before he graduated from school. Theres a reason why ace inspired so many guitar players. Kiss would have never happened without him. Period. Ace was and is kiss. Tommy thayer is great, but he'll never have the inflection or the stage presence that ace had.Ace truly seemed from outer space then.
I've been a KISS fan since 1976, the year I saw them live the first time. I can tell you that chassisbld is absolutely correct. Ace is KISS. There's no doubt about it. Even Paul and Gene admitted Ace was always the most popular one in the band. Lance in beautiful Bremerton, Washington
lancetop, I have played guitar for 18 years. People dont understand there is a difference between musically correct and rock and roll. If you listen to a guitar vurtioso you will be bored within 5 minutes. Rock and roll and ace frehley got your heart pumping. That my freind is what music should do, evoke some kind of emotion. Ace and his vibrato just made you sit back and go yeeaah. He spoke with his guitar not just played it.
right on, in KISS 2 of the 4 members do the talking with there money and their mouths, we know who they are, But Ace is one of the 2 who did the talking with his guitar pick, listen at 4:30, in the 70's no one was better that's why Ace is quietly the most influential guitarist ever.
no. gene is Kiss man. Ace was important yes, but replaceable. Gene however, defined and drove the sound, both with his playing and his vocals. Ace was just Ace. Good player. good for the band. just like peter criss. saw them in 78 Garden. best show i ever saw.
I agree with you my friend but Ace was the greatest player in KISS, he has never been replaceable, he is just awasome, I've never been a great fan of KISS, but Ace... I mean... he's just amazing, all heart, he plays with the heart in his hands
Another hit from the album that finally got KISS some notice (Dressed to Kill). Wouldn't it have been something if they had toured wearing 3-piece suits?
I miss the midnight special. That is all you had back in the 70's. Now I got blue ray and could see the brush strokes in the makeup! Thanks for posting this.
kings of leon are good but no where near kiss my friedns think kiss are only ok and they think kings of leon are calss im liek they arent tha good im like kiss are gods and new bands solos are like 10 seconds long and is are terrible
Rock bands don't do good solos anymore - they don't take the time to actually practice to be good enough to solo. It's pretty much the metal bands that solo, but none of them are even close to being as cool as this - and women don't like metal as much as ROCK! In a way I'm glad today's rock bands don't solo - because they'd embarrass themselves.
Kiss are true rock gods!!!! Ace is the guitar god and gene is a monster, paul is a great frontman and peter is truly a great drummer man Kiss lives forever!!!!
Gene Simmons is the main face of Kiss because of his bold public persona and because he was the boss, but Ace Frehley was the band's true supertalent.
Remember...this is 1975 and people are shocked about this band. They are not humans...they are knights in satan service..you name it...:-D KISS4ever!!!
WOW!!! Great memories. Gene was so smooth and slick....Paul prancing and jumping high in the air.....Peter right on time....and Ace....damn...what a solo. KISS is amazing. I remember staying up late to see this air for the first time in the mid 70's. Still gives me tingles.
THIS is when KISS was KISS... Totally underrated!

Is he tapping 3 years before we heard of EVH?
wannabehendrix 2 years ago 2
yes EVH didn't invent guitar tapping, neither did Frehley but this is one of the earliest uses supposedly
rhodesia789 2 years ago
Gene Simmons help Van Halen get a record deal. Eddie picked up the finger tapping from Ace Frehley. I thought Ace had started the finger tapping. Who did, if the Spaceman didn't.
hz11287 2 years ago
supposedly Jimmie Webster, Emmett Chapman, etc. check out the wikipedia page on "guitar tapping" it mentions this Kiss video in particular
rhodesia789 2 years ago
yes, ace did the tapping with a pick.
senseigomez 2 years ago
yes, exactly, he already talked about it on interviews.

Everyone comes here to see Ace! Admit it folks:) I've been a huge Ace fan since 1976.

ace is the only reson i listen to kiss
mmtube08 2 years ago 3
space ace rules, but I always noticed that throughout his days with kiss, he simply regurgetated the same solos and trademark techniques. Had he improvised more, he would have been over the top. I still love him and say he is one of rocks most influential wailers.

everyone who is a true KISS fan should shout from th top to bottom of their lungs to Mr. Simmons and Mr. Stanley, that they need to stop acting like used tampons and end the group, With a little integrity
hellshometome 2 years ago
not gonna happen. in fact, Kiss will probably live on after simmons and stanley leave the group. simmons and stanley have a brilliant concept: the players can be replaced. thanks for showing us that you aren't a true fan.

ace "invented" tapping not van halen!
Pigro89 3 years ago 5
Ace did not invent tapping, and neither did Van Halen. You need to go back a lot further, my friend.
laffable 3 years ago
i meant that he was the first to use it in rock 'n' roll
Pigro89 3 years ago
Hi there, You mentioned that Ace was not the first to do any "finger tapping" and you need to go back futher. Ok. EV was doing it in back in 1976-77. Ace was doing it back in 1974. Ritchie Blackmore was doing it back in 1969-70. Whom would you be referring to?
TheeMTExperience 2 years ago
Amazing. And Ace is doing tapping :)

CHASSISBLD 3 years ago 3
right on, in KISS 2 of the 4 members do the talking with there money and their mouths, we know who they are, But Ace is one of the 2 who did the talking with his guitar pick, listen at 4:30, in the 70's no one was better that's why Ace is quietly the most influential guitarist ever.
vfgjhj 3 years ago 2
Money..They're probably Gene and Peter Criss
vinisith 3 years ago
Ha, don't forget about Tipton and Downing of Priest, Lol!
jjjxxx777 2 years ago
no. gene is Kiss man. Ace was important yes, but replaceable. Gene however, defined and drove the sound, both with his playing and his vocals. Ace was just Ace. Good player. good for the band. just like peter criss. saw them in 78 Garden. best show i ever saw.
masterfurniture 3 years ago
I think it's been proven pretty conclusively, by any measure (monetary or otherwise), that Ace and Peter were not replaceable.
laffable 3 years ago 18
Eric Carr replaced Peter just fine.
listenbich 2 years ago
I agree with you my friend but Ace was the greatest player in KISS, he has never been replaceable, he is just awasome, I've never been a great fan of KISS, but Ace... I mean... he's just amazing, all heart, he plays with the heart in his hands
Ulrich11 2 years ago 3
Ace is THE BEST musician in KISS, no doubt.
Just see his performance at the end of this song. Simply amazing!
Space Ace rules!!!

Another hit from the album that finally got KISS some notice (Dressed to Kill). Wouldn't it have been something if they had toured wearing 3-piece suits?

Gene's expression during Ace's solo at 6:26 looks like he's thinking: "Damn, He's good!"

kings of leon are good but no where near kiss my friedns think kiss are only ok and they think kings of leon are calss im liek they arent tha good im like kiss are gods and new bands solos are like 10 seconds long and is are terrible
KISSARETHEGREATEST 4 years ago
Rock bands don't do good solos anymore - they don't take the time to actually practice to be good enough to solo. It's pretty much the metal bands that solo, but none of them are even close to being as cool as this - and women don't like metal as much as ROCK! In a way I'm glad today's rock bands don't solo - because they'd embarrass themselves.
eclipsempi 4 years ago 2
Kiss are true rock gods!!!! Ace is the guitar god and gene is a monster, paul is a great frontman and peter is truly a great drummer man Kiss lives forever!!!!
RockFANATIC212 4 years ago
Gene Simmons is the main face of Kiss because of his bold public persona and because he was the boss, but Ace Frehley was the band's true supertalent.
thimoneus 4 years ago
I got two thumbs down for saying Ace was the band's true supertalent? Damn fucking right he was, and you know it, so fuck you.

WOW!!! Great memories. Gene was so smooth and slick....Paul prancing and jumping high in the air.....Peter right on time....and Ace....damn...what a solo. KISS is amazing. I remember staying up late to see this air for the first time in the mid 70's. Still gives me tingles.
