Although he was a kind hearted man Johnfern99 (and everyone else who may read this comment) , he was also no doubt a masochist. And sadly that's not an awfully, awfully good person for any kid to be idolizing. (Someone who deliberately 'rolls the dice' with his own life regularly for no truly good reason? what example does that set? That life is so cheap you can take stupid chances on a whim? Get a grip.)
@telekingkong Or that you can do something great no matter the risk. You say he did it for no reason? Almost everyone in the world knows Evel Knievel and what he did. Out of the 100 billion people who ever lived few can say they will be remembered. You say no good reason, I say you should look at yourself and decide if you've lived a life to make it have any value. Not being mean cuz trust I wish I could say mine had great meaning too.
As kids, we waited for him to come out of the Holiday Inn since we knew he was staying there and his trucks were there. Evel came out and we all just stood there in awe. I finally blurted out the only question that came to mind at the time, "How's jumpin'?" He laughed and said good or something like that. Suddenly, all the other kids were yelling out questions, mostly, "Could I have your autograph?"
He was kind enough to go back into the lobby and get a pen, and signed an autograph for us all.
There are alot of great riders (stuntmen) out there. Eddie Kidd is great, Robbie is great and etc. For Evel's records to be broken they show jump on the same style Harley he used. I will not take credit away from anyone who risk there life for use. But there was only one Evel.
He was using one of those Harley 750's. Even stripped down, that's a beast to be keeping in the air as long as he did and as far as he could.... Yet I believe it was liver disease that finally took the man down.
When i saw the guy doing this on Hot Rod he jumpt 1 more buss then Evel did i thought hes gonner make it he would have if he dint take his hands off the bike :L
I was there too, in the crowd to his right. Do you remember Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart doing the intro and that old French bloke who dived 80ft into a puddle of water beforehand to warm up the crowd? We were all pissing ourselves laughing as Ed called for absolute silence before he dived lol!
It was not broadcast live (in the UK at least), it was covered in that evenings news bulletins (Holiday Monday), but us fans had to wait until the following Saturday to see highlights of the event on ITV's World Of Sport. Happy Days!
I was there too ... I was 11 ... we thought he was ok because he got off that stretcher and walked out ...
