joehughes9...I agree, Andy does a great job, but then of course he does on everthing he sings!! I would still have to say my personal favourite version of this song was recorded by the late Liam Weldon of Dublin on his one and only LP back in the 70s before his all to soon death. Slan!
UnidosHermanos- This was recorded in 1981. Don't know exactly when Galvin wrote it. I would say in the mid-1960s perhaps. It was well known by about 1970.
Thanks for the information, Cahercrea. I agree totally on your assessment of Patrick Galvin (RIP). His ballad singing was among my first introductions to Irish music when I was a lad, along with the McPeake Family and the late, great Davy Hammond.
Galvin's other accomplishments are legion and legend.
This song by Paddy Galvin was actually recorded at the home of Jesse Winch, one of the founders of the original Celtic Thunder, at his home in Takoma Park, Maryland, just over the DC line, in 1981, a few days after Paddy & Celtic Thunder appeared in concert together. Paddy was a powerful and irreplaceable force as poet, composer, & singer.
It has often been said, No one sings Dylan like Dylan,,,,Well, Now it can be said, no one sings Galvin like Galvin. Far and away, the best version of this fine song that I have ever heard. Thanks for sharing it with us all. Venceremos

I'm a fan of the Liam Weldon version, first time I heard it sung by the man who wrote it. Fantastic, thanks for uploading it.
