I have been an Atheist for several years now. Listening to this man's words has had a great impact on my life. I don't know how I missed the announcement of his death, but today marks the only day I have wept over being an Atheist. The idea that I missed out on the opportunity to tell this man what he meant to me has driven me to tears. The world will be less without him. Seth, yes Hitch was great, but don't sell yourself so short. You have managed to put a personal face on atheism. I applaud your work bringing out us ordinary everyday folks to share our stories. Hope to see you in DC!
Christopher Hitchens was simply irreplaceable , when he died all his admirers (me included) had a "december 8th 1980" moment .(Though Hitch himself would have probably hated that)
As a Pagan, I am a big fan of Christopher Hitchens, I like how he stood his resolve and ground against the Christ psychotics that invade all corners of the world. Some of crazy religious friends that I always had verbal conflicts with, kept saying to me like things like 'God kill the infidel once and for all', 'Hitchens is Satan's antichrist, spreading dissent of God's kingdom'. Even a month later it just feels so wrong that he died at 62, I'm not even an atheist, and I admired him for calling out organized religion on its hypocrisy, irrationality, and bigotry. As a gay man I appreciated the times I heard him speak out for gays. Christopher Hitchens may not have always been a sweetheart, but I believe he was a smart and good man who made an important contribution to the world. May he live on for years to come through his work, and his words.
My CH experience is much like yours, except I'm looking back on 60 years before I experienced Mr. Hitchens. On our 39th wedding anniversary, my husband woke me with the news that "our prince is dead." He's never called another man a prince before, so I knew exactly who he meant. A month later, I'm sharing others' experience of His Hitchslapedness. He changed everyone, even the religious people he debated were changed a little, though they'd probably never admit it. We don't call it 'choice' if the punishment is everlasting torture. 'Worship Me, and if you don't, you'll be tortured for ETERNITY.' Not a free choice-it's an ultimatum, a threat.
As for why I post this at all, I do because it's important to point out to Bible thumpers such as yourself that, no, your beliefs won't go unchallenged. But it's a silly accusation to make-YOU'RE here too. Guess so!
Either offer a real response to this or not, or offer one like your last and be ignored.
So the choice to believe in and worship the Christian God is NOT forced according to you? I'll need to remember that the next time I see you and need some money-I'll offer to throw acid on your face if you refuse to hand over your wallet. After all, you can do what you want.
What nonsense. Don't take this to assume I'm somehow implyin a belief in God. I'm only pointing out that if the Christian God is accurate, and does include a Hell of torture, then he isn't offering choice. Con't-
I'm afraid you don't get to have both sides of the conversation-you don't get to tell me what I'm looking for. Not that I can stop you, of course-it's just that's a silly, unreasonable thing to do.
God *does* use force, at least so long as there is a Hell: believe, or you'll be tortured *forever*. That is force, theetrue, just as much as if I clapped a gun to your head and demanded your wallet-if you gave it to me, it was because I forced you. You should drop the silly idea it's not
Yes, theetrue, because nothing says loving, forgiving God that values free will *quite like* one who says 'If you don't believe in me the way I tell you to believe in me, I will have you in agonized, torturous damnation for eternity after you die'.
This is not what a loving, forgiving god would do. It is precisely what a jealous, spiteful tyrant would do. Quite aside from the question of whether God exists, if he does exist, and punishes a kind and helpful non-believing life with hellfire, he
A question for humanity. In a world where there's no proof of God's existence or of life after death; how will you explain to your children why you brought them into the world and why they will have to die?
Do you know that Jesus mostly preached love and harmony? Do you know that Muhammad commanded Muslims to give charity, honor orphans, obey their mothers? No. You listen to Hitchens (a guy who made millions, from books, lectures, and articles for preaching atheism).
One of the 4 horsemen has gone. My heart is heavy for i know this life is the only one we live. Now we can only remember him, and try to live up to his memory.
Nothing aside from God's true words makes sense. Only God's words and His creations are perfect, and true. This world is full of lies made up by man. Please, give your burdens to Jesus, and He will give you rest. Change today and accept Him! "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Don't be proud, thinking you know all things. The truth is with Jesus Christ. Amen! ;')
click on my channel and paste the link in your browser , the link is not clickable but you can paste it. The link is located under my avatar picture. Evolution is a lie and if you do not read the information I am sending you to then you are lying to your self and doing your scientific religion and injustice. May god have mercy on this guy but better he be dead than to keep leading souls to hell. I know it sounds harsh but it is the truth.
Christianity has a demonic god telling a man to kill and burn his son. This sadistic, jealous, insecure being could not even determine if Abram loved him.Apparently, his god did NOT know the intent of any man's heart.
We know god NEVER ordered this Satanic activity of burning his 2nd son Isaac.God tells us he never even thought about doing it and NEVER commaned it.Jer19:5.
Christianity's creator is the demonic of the Bible requiring blood to forgive.
Does youtube site prevent comments or ratings?I briefly had seen this and immediately moved on as these fear the truth and will not allow conversation.
Hitch warned the religious community would attempt to do this. Evidence of a creator in no way validates a demonic YWHW as the true god. "In the beginning, the GODS created the heavens and earth." "Let us make man in OUR inmage."
"For shame, for shame." "It's immoral and inhumane." "If god told me to burn son I'd say'fuck you!'"
@worksequalsalvation The God of The Bible said works DO NOT equal salvation: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith; and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; NOT BY WORKS, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8,9. Calling the God of The Bible a demon proves you are serving a god by the name of Satan; Repent and be baptized or go to Hell devil fool.
Eph2 is lie.Jesus taught to obey God's laws.Jesus teaches clearly in Par of Sheep and Goats, those with faith only went directly to hell. Those with works went to heaven. This is Jesus speaking.James2 declares Paul a "vain"man and destroys Paul's faith only doctrine.Paul HATED apostles as is seen in Gal1-2.He calls them liars deceivers while Jesus makes them 1 with Father santified in truth.
Jesus calls Paul false apostle Rev2.You act like all christians calling names when cornered.
Where did I lie? Your hero,Saul of Tarus disguised as the self proclaimed apostle Paul who gets ALL his doctrine in dreams also declares in Romans Nero is a minister of YWHW.He says Nero will not reward evil for good.Really, you believe Saul's BS?He kicked his pregnant wife to death.
Paul quotes "Hymn to Zeus" and claims these are words from YWHW.Acts17.
You called me a liar. How do I lie? I am calling you out. God said do not drink blood. You pretend you are drinking blood.LMFAO
@theetrue Saul of Tarsus say anything. He claimed everything was legal for him.James tried him.Paul constantly broke God's laws.Acts21.Paul says he was tried unto death. No sympathy for Paul.Jesus applaudes the Ephesians for this trial and determining he is a false apostel.Rev2.
Again I ask, where did I lie?Your pagan priest in a suit called a preacher is the one who continually lies and you pay him to do so.You love deception. Why not check out this Christian author?
It must suck when you discover the man you love,Paul the homosexual of Tarsus who claims he is demon oppressed by God,is actually Jesus' and his apostle's worst enemy.
You cannot dispute truth so you are like your father the devil and accuse without evidence.
Everybody...want to read about Christian's achilles heel? Read freeonline pages, distribute and watch them fly into a rage.Sucks how they savor the farts of Jesus' enemy and live in his stench.
You still living in Paul's dream world?Ha,ha,ha,ha.Lets see. Before the foundations of the world, god knew man would sin so he decided to plan his atonement.
His plan?Rape the dog shit out of a 13yr enganed, virgin. Then he would restore her hymen...the Great Restorer. Then he would send angel to tell Joe what he did. This demigod would then be brutalized and killed. It was necessary lying and murder happen to accomplish this demonic plan. Now,just believe this shit to be saved.WTF l8<o
Frankly, I do think it's appropriate to not deify or whitewash someone just because they are recently dead or dying -- especially someone like Hitchens. Wouldn't he want us to keep arguing over whether he was right about a particular issue? Wouldn't he be in favor of open discourse?
The man may be gone, and we regret his passing, but it is wonderful how his work- all his writings, his debates, interviews, essays, books - all survive him and will continue to speak loudly for a long time to come. Cheers, Hitch. We are all enriched by the contributions you have made to public discourse.
I know what you mean about preemptively preparing an obituary. It is as if you were at that point giving the universe permisison to take him from us, because we were prepared for it. We feel that if we refuse to prepare for the event in this way, then it can't happen. Unfortunately, the universe is incapable of caring.
Your little god died...too bad he had no power to come back...like all people, we will all die and meet our creator...It is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment. I hope he got right with God even if it was in the last breath he took. I hope he made it to heaven. But after all, he was pretty staunch atheist and evolutionist. Evolution is that thing that people believe you know that we came from an amoeba that turned into a monkey and turned into a human... yeah that fairytale.
@1stupormundi .We did not come from monkeys, we came from a common ancestor and apes are the closest common ancestor to ours. Oh yeah and your belief is that a cosmic jewish guy came back from the dead and says he can take away an evil from your heart by thinking about him telepathically and if you eat his flesh and drink his blood you will make it to heaven and his proof of that is that his mother didn't have sex with anyone XD. Have a happy new year!
@1stupormundi ...fairytale ??? how about this for a fairytale..........bloke is born to a virgin mother !! turns perrier water into vintage burgundy !! feeds 5,000 people with a slice of bread and a tin of pilchards !! walks on water !! dies and then wakes up again 5 days later !!
Only sad, stupid, scared, brainwashed people, or sexual deviants, believe in the biggest fairytale of all....RELIGION.
Religion encourages genital mutilation and worse, and promotes division between human beings.
@1tyresius Watch the BBC loser...report of a zebra fish giving virgin birth. Thats right! for the 4th year in a row it has laid eggs which hatched even though no contact with male fish. Also BBC report from India of a religious man not eating or drinking for 70 years. Doctors have him on survailence at the hospital for 5 days and he has not eaten or gone to the toilet in that time. Gets energy from meditation (God). So youre the fairy tale asshole. And its 3 days not 5 you twit!!
@1stupormundi You're kind of an idiot, aren't you? If you ever paid any attention to Hitchens, you'd know that, while he obviously didn't believe in heaven, he wouldn't have wanted to go there even if it were real. He compared it to living in North Korea, but worse, since at least you can die and leave North Korea.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."
I just found out about this aswell. I really wish I had met the man, or even had the oppertunity to be in the audience during a debate. I really hope there is another rational, intelligent individual who is skeptical of religion and "god" just as much as he was.........There's still dawkins, harris, and others. Goodbye, Mr.Hitchens...........
JESUS CHRIST, HIS CATHOLIC-UNIVERSAL-APOSTOLIC CHURCH, SACRAMENTS, THE BIBLE, MIRACLES, HEALINGS, ST. MARY APPARITIONS, MESSAGES FROM HEAVEN, SIGNS IN 2011 ARE NOT A MYTHOLOGY BUT THE REALITY !!!
Wow! I just found out about this. Sad news as he was inspiration those of us who chose sanity over superstition. I bet the theists were hoping he was gonna somehow convert to or find comfort in religion in his final days...didn't happen. farewell Mr Hitchens, and thank you!
i think he forgot to say as you was describing how hitchen's comments and response were crafted, the most important thing he forgot to say was Hitchen's comments were "EDUCATED!"
TheThinkingAtheist, you should do a video about criticizing Islam. I think the christian topic is getting kind of old. Beside you have some subscribers that come from muslim background. Thanks !!!
I was deeply saddened by the loss of The Hitch.I only recently became a voracious aficionado of his many varied works, and I lament not learning of this great man sooner. I am exceptionally well read, but even I had to hit up the online dictionary to learn about some words he used, and he inspired me to be better, and to think. I hold him in the same class as other historically important theologians as Socrates, Nietzsche, and Epicurus. Humanity has suffered a great loss.
I agree - The fact that atheist as a group have a higher IQ than theists is just a curious observation and cerainly does not prove the god yarweh does not exist. Or thor, krishna or allah.
If anything, it just suggests that skepticism for all of these supernatural entities is more likely to be based on reason and deliberation of evidence than ignorance.
@TheNewJrl Yeah, there was recently news about finding tantalizing clues about the Higgs boson particle. I think I read something like 500 trillion particle experiments have been preformed and their 90% through the process of eliminate. They said 2012 will be the year they should find it. To be able to answer the question why is there something instead of nothing will be huge.
I am starting my own Hitchmas celebration. I invite all to join me. I will make it a priority to read/ re-read at least one thing by Christopher Hitchens every December. I am grateful for so many things, and I am appreciative of Christopher Hitchens for shining the light and helping me truly appreciate them in a free and reasoned way.
I still have trouble thinking of Hitchens as dead. I tend to go about my day without really thinking about it at all, but generally whenever I do think about it I get this small feeling like he's still a living guy, only to in the next instant remember that he had died. It's a little hard to explain, but I wonder if anyone else feels that way, if you get what I'm trying to convey here.
I decided I didn't believe in God in December 2009 at age 13, I didn't discover Christopher Hitchens or fully grasp all the arguments until December 2010 at age 14. When I saw him debate I would just listen and smile because he would absolutely demolish anybody that debated with him. I see it now in December 2011 at age 15, I am another year wiser. Thank you Christopher, you've changed my one and only life for the better.
The rub in all of this theist/atheist battle is we (atheists) wont be around to gloat to the nimrod theists that we were right all along after we die.
@genobahamut1337 The only thing keeping the belief in God going is the lack of verifiable evidence he doesn't exist. So the scammer evangelical authors and lecturers come up with their baseless assertions and cross referenced non sense that seems perfectly reasonable to the already convinced.
The fact that all Gods are unfalsifiable and unverifiable never seems to dawn on them. Under that system of logic anything can pass for evidence.
@metalsusa1 True enough, but they still can't confirm anything to us, even if they think they'll be able to. It doesn't matter if that doesn't effect them, that's something that's beneficial to us.
@genobahamut1337 Quantum physics in the next decade or two will be able to challenge all of these religious claims, you wait and see. The large hadron accelerator at Cern will discover the Higgs boson next year. Breakthroughs in our understanding of infinite inflation, dark energy, and string theory are going to shock many people at what reality is and if we live in a multiverse. My money is on we do.
@metalsusa1 I would love it if we could find all that out next year. I really don't think it'll happen that fast, but if it could happen within our lifetimes that would be amazing. However, I promise you that the religious will still hang on. They didn't get to where they are today because of listening to science and reason.
@genobahamut1337 The Higgs particle according the guys at Cern's is running out of places to hide. They have it cornered and are several months away from popping the champagne corks. The other stuff I mentioned we will have a profoundly better understanding of in the coming decades not years. The next embarrassing loss for creationists will be their declaration that something can't come from nothing. That's even if they understand the opposing argument other then "God done it". HA!
@metalsusa1 Well, they still have to prove that this Higgs particle exists (in the form we think it does, anyway), and there's always the chance that we are not yet capable of finding it if it does. As for that something from nothing, that's already an embarrassing loss for creationists. They already have their god existing out of and within nothingness at the same time. Whatever we find out, though, I'm sure will help diminish their numbers over the years.
@genobahamut1337 That's true, but the math works every time in experimental models. Math told us the atom and black holes existed before we found any evidence for them. That doesn't mean we'll 100% find the Higg's, but it's a big step in the right direction.
@metalsusa1 Yes, I personally do think this Higgs field is likely to exist and I really hope it gets discovered soon. There's no telling what advancements we'll make from there.
@genobahamut1337 Not to mention we'll go forward one big step further in answering the questions of how the universe was formed. I don't like the fact that an improbable god will get the credit for every step science discovers.
It's like they wait for the next big advancement or discovery then simply attach gods name to it. Well I guess that's the way it's going to be, but I don't have to like it.
The messages from Christipher Hitchens, unlike those of any religious text, were clear, unambiguous, and intelligible. No need to "interpret" or have to be "clarified" but any a chosen messenger from the supernatural to convey the meaning. He did not, and could not, call for violence against those who disagreed. He sought to bring people to discuss the basic issues facing mankind in a logical and reasonable light. His debates were always to this end, and he invariably proved his point.
Christopher Hitchens was a man who was able dispel the myths of theism in an ordered, articulate and often humorous manner. His arguements were well thought out and in turn thought provoking, it has been been a privilege to watch him and he's been a great inspiration. Raise a glass for the Hitch.
Wow!! I have just only discovered Christopher. The first I heard about him was an after comment by Matt Dillahunty regarding the Texas Freethough Convention. And I feel truly sorry that I am joining this party so late. I haven't even gotten his book yet....and I already love him. Thank you for remembering him. I will look up that Rabbi debate.
only found Mr Hitchens 1 month ago on you tube and am proud to say he changed my life, inspirational ,educational ,motivational,Has made me focus more on things that matter and push what is crap to one side ,I am a christian but the education I have gotten over the last month is jeopardizing that ,my tolerance for bulshit is fading fast .Will be looking for inspiration elsewere such as Dawkins ,Harris etc .but they have to lift there game to come close to Hitch .RIP Mr Hitchens,Thank You
Congrats Seth, The difficulty you had preparing ahead of time suggests your not a psychopath. Then again most of us atheists aren't psychopaths. Fischer says Hitch " is in Hell because God loves him." Shared by Atheist Australia on Facebook. Most commenters are dusgusted with Fischer's video in part because Hitch wasn't in the ground yet(18 Dec NZDT).
Do you know that Jesus mostly preached love and harmony? Do you know that Muhammad commanded Muslims to give charity, honor orphans, obey their mothers? No. You listen to Hitchens (a guys who made millions, from books, lectures, and articles for preaching atheism).
Philhellenes' videos are simply jaw-dropping. You can't expect him to exactly fill up your sub box but the keyword here is quality over quantity. I just wanted to second your plug.
If Christopher Hitchens hadn't damaged his lungs and heart and vascular system through smoking, and if he hadn't damaged his liver and kidneys through excessive alcohol consumption, then he would have had a better chance of beating his cancer. I saw him do the waterboarding video and it was obvioius he didn't have the physical constitution to endure any form of discomfort. Hitch is one of my heroes, as a thinker, but not a good role model on how to actually treat your body.
@rosemaya48 well his dad died from the same thing so he was heavily predisposed to it. I'm not defending his lifestyle but he was 62 and lived the way he wanted to.
The night after he died I had a dream that I met him in his house. He was lying down on a sofa - he looked terrible. I walked up to him and told him that I had always wanted to talk to him. He sat up - indifferent to his own condition and we talked.

Con't-

@theetrue,
I'm afraid you don't get to have both sides of the conversation-you don't get to tell me what I'm looking for.
You should drop the silly idea it's not
RakeeshJ4 1 month ago
@RakeeshJ4
You pretty much do what you want, the decision is yours, why do you
say you are being forced, no one is forcing you, you have a choice
of eternal Heaven or eternal Hell, and I thought you rejected the idea
of God, The Devil, Heaven, and Hell anyway so what difference does it
make to you? You have nothing better to do than to argue? Guess not.
theetrue 1 month ago

"how will (I) explain to (my) children why (I) brought
them into the world and why they will have to die?"

Tell them the truth: Tell them they are God's children, and God
brought them into the world to glorify and serve Him, and that
when they die, if they have served Him, they will return to Him.

Please, give your burdens to Jesus, and He will give you rest. Change today and accept Him! "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Christianity has a demonic god telling a man to kill and burn his son.

The rub in all of this theist/atheist battle is we (atheists) wont be around to gloat to the nimrod theists that we were right all along after we die.
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 I've once said this before to someone else, but the bright side is that the theist doesn't get to do that to us either.
genobahamut1337 2 months ago
@genobahamut1337 The only thing keeping the belief in God going is the lack of verifiable evidence he doesn't exist. So the scammer evangelical authors and lecturers come up with their baseless assertions and cross referenced non sense that seems perfectly reasonable to the already convinced.
The fact that all Gods are unfalsifiable and unverifiable never seems to dawn on them. Under that system of logic anything can pass for evidence.
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 True enough, but they still can't confirm anything to us, even if they think they'll be able to. It doesn't matter if that doesn't effect them, that's something that's beneficial to us.
genobahamut1337 2 months ago
@genobahamut1337 Quantum physics in the next decade or two will be able to challenge all of these religious claims, you wait and see. The large hadron accelerator at Cern will discover the Higgs boson next year. Breakthroughs in our understanding of infinite inflation, dark energy, and string theory are going to shock many people at what reality is and if we live in a multiverse. My money is on we do.
What will these religious types have to say then?
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 I would love it if we could find all that out next year. I really don't think it'll happen that fast, but if it could happen within our lifetimes that would be amazing. However, I promise you that the religious will still hang on. They didn't get to where they are today because of listening to science and reason.
genobahamut1337 2 months ago
@genobahamut1337 The Higgs particle according the guys at Cern's is running out of places to hide. They have it cornered and are several months away from popping the champagne corks. The other stuff I mentioned we will have a profoundly better understanding of in the coming decades not years. The next embarrassing loss for creationists will be their declaration that something can't come from nothing. That's even if they understand the opposing argument other then "God done it". HA!
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 Well, they still have to prove that this Higgs particle exists (in the form we think it does, anyway), and there's always the chance that we are not yet capable of finding it if it does. As for that something from nothing, that's already an embarrassing loss for creationists. They already have their god existing out of and within nothingness at the same time. Whatever we find out, though, I'm sure will help diminish their numbers over the years.
genobahamut1337 2 months ago
@genobahamut1337 That's true, but the math works every time in experimental models. Math told us the atom and black holes existed before we found any evidence for them. That doesn't mean we'll 100% find the Higg's, but it's a big step in the right direction.
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 Yes, I personally do think this Higgs field is likely to exist and I really hope it gets discovered soon. There's no telling what advancements we'll make from there.
genobahamut1337 2 months ago
@genobahamut1337 Not to mention we'll go forward one big step further in answering the questions of how the universe was formed. I don't like the fact that an improbable god will get the credit for every step science discovers.
It's like they wait for the next big advancement or discovery then simply attach gods name to it. Well I guess that's the way it's going to be, but I don't have to like it.
metalsusa1 2 months ago
@metalsusa1 Personally, I attribute every scientific advancement to the floating redwood space stick. It's more fun that way.

The movement needs swag Seth, it needs swag. Hitch had that. Dawkins and the rest doesn't have it.

Do you know that Jesus mostly preached love and harmony? Do you know that Muhammad commanded Muslims to give charity, honor orphans, obey their mothers? No. You listen to Hitchens (a guys who made millions, from books, lectures, and articles for preaching atheism).

The abbreviated title for this video on my home Youtube feed was "Remembering Christ..."
I think Hitch would be disgusted by such a comparison.

@cyberneticbadger

@rosemaya48 You're talking about waterboarding, a form of torture, not taking a tackle from a linebacker.

@rosemaya48 It's not PC, but I say "Amen".

Yes, the party will go on without Hitch, but is it really worth attending now that he's gone.
