John's overdubs blend magically with Paul's lyrics, a great example of how magical their relationship was in these times (the pinnacle of the Beatles). It had to be a harp. But you are correct, somewhat modified. Maybe a cello? I'm not sure. I know they used the Moog Synthesizer in Abbey Road, but did they use it for this song? Hmm.

I love the sound of the strings pulsing during the first time they sing the chorus. And John sounds so despondent-- so beautiful. He had such a way of conveying emotion through his voice. His singing always had such a vulnerable sound to it.
